Girls Football Championships 4 NSW COMBINED HIGH SCHOOLS SPORTS ASSOCIATION GIRLS FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 4 - 6 JUNE 2019 KIRRAWEE Hosted by Sydney East Schools Sports Association in conjunction with the NSW Department of Education School Sport Unit Welcome from the NSW Department of Education I am delighted to welcome competitors, parents, caregivers, team and event officials and supporters to Kirrawee for the 2019 NSW Combined High Schools Sports Association Girls’ Football Championships. Our school sport programs are rich in tradition and your participation at this event acknowledges your part in this long history. School sport championships and carnivals, organised and conducted by our state and regional schools sports associations, showcase the enormous talent that is nurtured in our schools. These opportunities encourage competitors to participate in the spirit of friendship, fair play and respect for others. Students are here this week representing their schools, and schools sports associations. Many students will achieve a personal best and gain a greater understanding that participation in sport provides enjoyment, builds connections and develops lifelong skills, including team work, problem solving and decision making. On behalf of the NSW Department of Education, I would like to thank our host school sport association Hunter for their hospitality and event organisation. I also extend my thanks and appreciation to the parents, caregivers, teachers, principals and community sports organisations that have supported this championship. I would particularly like to acknowledge Teachers Mutual Bank for their ongoing support of our school sporting programs. I trust that all competitors will be rewarded through their own personal performances and that they will leave with fond memories of their participation in the NSW Combined High Schools Sports Association Girls’ Football Championships. I am certain that every individual effort will be recognised and greatly appreciated by schools and schools sports associations. The students are here this week representing their School Sports Associations, Schools and families. It is an honour to gain representative status as an athlete and we look forward to the emerging performances of those who may emulate the careers of many of the current and former Matildas, Young Matildas and W-League players who have participated previously at these championships. From this championship the NSW Combined High Schools State teams to compete in the NSW All-Schools Tournament during June will be announced for fixtures against Combined Catholic Colleges and Combined Independent Schools. This event also serves as the trials for this year’s National Championships which will be held in Brisbane during September. We look forward to some wonderful football with the challenge for all teams to step up to the quality football we saw from last year’s champions, Sydney South West who narrowly accounted for Sydney North in the final. I would like to thank Sydney East Schools Sports Association for hosting the 2019 carnival. Our thanks are also extended to Football NSW who, along with Puma, are also great supporters and sponsors of our Football Program. Finally, may I wish all the 2019 regional football representatives from across NSW the very best of luck and again, enjoy your time and participation on the park and I look forward to the great “sportswomanship”, athleticism and quality football of this annual event. THURSDAY, JUNE 4, 2015 SPORTS Preview Nigeria seek to step up after years as also-rans WELLINGTON: Nigeria have been Africa’s com- manding team in women’s soccer, ever present at every Women’s World Cup, and are finally hoping to step up and join the list of the tournament’s top contenders. The Super Falcons kept up an obligatory African presence at the last six World Cups but made little headway, demonstrating the gulf between their game and the more developed standard of women’s football in Europe and North America. But in recent years the gap has narrowed and after Nigeria finished runner-up in last year’s Under-20 Women’s World Cup, there are now hopes Nigeria could be a realistic challenger. “Our desire is to be counted at the World Cup and we won’t leave any stone unturned to ensure we achieve the target,” coach Edwin Okon said in a recent Nigeria press interview ahead of the June 6-July 5 Women’s World Cup in Canada. The target is at least a place in the last eight, emulat- ing Nigeria’s best ever achievement at a Women’s World Cup when they got to the quarter-finals in 1999. Key to Nigeria’s hopes will be a positive result in their opening game in Group D against Sweden in Winnipeg on Monday. They also play Australia and the United States in a tough draw. Okon has put heavy emphasis on fitness ahead of the tournament and there has been a lengthy preparatory camp.

  • W-League TV Viewership Up
Article No. 8468 Available on www.roymorgan.com Link to Roy Morgan Profiles Tuesday, 21 July 2020 W-League grows TV viewership as Australia & NZ awarded hosting rights for 2023 Women’s World Cup New research from Roy Morgan shows the W-League’s TV viewership is growing even as other Soccer competitions experienced viewership declines. A record high 879,000 Australians watch the W-League on TV, up 265,000 (+43%) on a year ago. In what represents a huge boost to the Women’s game in this part of the world Australia and New Zealand were recently awarded joint hosting rights for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup – the largest Women’s sporting competition in the world. The 2023 edition will be the first to welcome 32 countries to E compete, a significant increase on the 24 that competed in France in 2019. However, the W-League’s TV viewership growth was not enough to make up for the declines in viewership for the FIFA World Cup, English Premier League, A-League and other forms of Soccer compared to a year ago. Now 4,098,000 Australians watch any of the listed Soccer competitions, down from 4,577,000 a year ago – a drop of 479,000 (-10%). The FIFA World Cup is easily the most popular Soccer competition on Australian TV with 3,391,000 viewers, although this is down 471,000 (-12%) on a year ago. The next FIFA Men’s World Cup is due to be held in Qatar in 2022 with the FIFA Women’s World Cup following a year after in Australia.
