Ostrander was a seminarian, I know for sure, maybe a clergyman, and his Spectre series is suffused with religion and religious questions. He writes with delicacy yet also urgency on important issues. I sincerely hope DC collects more of this fantastic series. Dec 21, Marco Antonio di Forelli rated it really liked it. Dec 19, Chris Lemmerman rated it really liked it Shelves: comics-and-manga-read. Great stuff. The first storyline is a little long at six issues, but it jams a lot of characters into it, an intriguing look at the level of power that The Spectre has, and the moral quandaries that he deals with on a daily basis. The fact that this comes off the back of the first storyline in the first volume that left The Spectre without a human friend to ground him makes Spectre: Wrath of God Vol 2 all the more fun. The second storyline in contrast takes Spectre: Wrath of God Vol 2 little time to get going, but once the JSA and Superman get in Great stuff. The second storyline in contrast takes a little time to get going, but once the JSA and Superman get involved, everything picks up a lot. The fact that I managed to read this entire volume of 10 issues in 1 day which is an achievement for me, since usually I read about 4 or 5 and get distracted is a testament to how easy each issue is to get through, despite the heavy subject matter. Nov 03, Alex Sarll added it. The padre from Ostrander's Suicide Squad moves to New York, and mentions world events to a chap who comes to confess. Before you know it, the Spectre is in the Balkans, concluding that nobody is innocent in a civil war so he might as well just destroy the lot of them. As in, the entire country, except for the leaders, left alive Spectre: Wrath of God Vol 2 know how badly they failed. Are we really so much worse than the rest of the world, they ask him. And this also sets him Spectre: Wrath of God Vol 2 So we're off on a tour of nineties geopolitical hotspots, sometimes thinly disguised, elsewhere not. At times it's awkward - Ostrander has always been prone to well-meaning fumbles when he moves from individual consciences and general principles to real-world specifics. But for the most part, it does read as one man's attempt to thrash out the problems of evil, Spectre: Wrath of God Vol 2 as superhero horror instead of theology because why not? And of course with Mandrake on art, it all looks suitably feverish, though when more conventional heroes turn up they can look a bit nineties overmuscled. Turn up they definitely do, though - this is its own very personal story, but still acknowledges and interacts with the world of which it's a part, from the destruction of Coast City to Constantine's spell on the streets. And if you think you've had a bad day at work, what about the poor sod here who, after not quite finishing reading his own unwritten book in Lucien's library, inadvertently turns Superman into Hitler? Nov 06, Ben Guilfoy rated it really liked it. A lot of the ideas at play here are fantastic, particularly Spectre's rage and depression over the death of his friend in the previous volume and how that feeds into his judgment of an entire country. But I think Ostrander stumbles a bit in the resolution Spectre: Wrath of God Vol 2, knocking this one down a peg.

Forget the terrorists occupying American soil, the guerrilla factions killing each other off, or the aliens invading Earth. It’s the war at home that may spell the end of Director Amanda Waller and Task Force X.Waller’s “Suicide Squad” of incarcerated super-villains and troubled agents has worked effectively under the radar—until now. No one, not even her staff in the Belle Reve metahuman prison facility, trusts “The Wall.” Plus, rising tensions among ever-changing Squad members mean that they’ve become a bigger threat to each other than to their opponents. And when government officials with presidential aspirations discover the existence of Task Force X, Waller is forced to do whatever it takes to keep her team from being exposed to the world—even if it means crossing the thin moral line that separates her from the disposable villains recruited for her impossible assignments.

The Shot Heard 'round DCBy Charlie GriffinDeadshot, despite never being the biggest, most popular villain, has a solid collection of reprints to pick up on. From his individual- focused books Deadshot: Bulletproof or Suicide Squad Most Wanted: Deadshot, to his team-ups with the aforementioned Task Force X or Secret six, it's not hard to find Floyd's murderous antics for your bookshelf. And here is really where it all clicked for the character. As you most certainly gathered from the title, this book is a beginning, both of Deadshot as a fan-favorite character as well as a more literal establishing of his backstory. This miniseries spins directly out of John Ostrander's earlier Suicide Squad run, setting up most of the basic elements that would go on to define Floyd from here on out.Having said that, if you have read any of the later appearances of the character, this book does lose a little of the impact it originally had; between later stories retelling or refining what happened here, and the fact that this is less violent or "punchy" than his more modern follow-ups, it's not as likely to outright shock a new reader as it might have once been able to do.

But women’s roles in comics have often been diminished as they become victims, damsels in distress, and sidekicks. This thesis explores the problems that female characters often face in comic books, but it also shows the positive representation that new creators have introduced over the years.

SURVEILLANCE, SOCIAL ORDER, AND GENDERED SUBVERSIONS IN BATMAN COMICS, 1986-2011 by © Aidan Diamond (Thesis) submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts Department of English Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador !ii ABSTRACT Batman is “the world’s most popular superhero.”1 An icon of American excep- tionalism, Batman has been featured in radio programmes, television shows, musicals, and more films than any other superhero since his 1939 comic book inception. While Batman has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other superhero, sustained scholarly inquiry of his vigilante infrastructures and their effects upon those Batman deems criminal is scarce; instead, critical readers prefer to interrogate his fascist under- tones. This thesis aims to ameliorate this lack of scholarship by interrogating Batman’s regulatory surveillance assemblage, particularly how it is negotiated and subverted by Barbara Gordon/Oracle and Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Using Foucault’s theories of crimi- nality, Lyon’s articulation of surveillance, Haraway’s cyborg hybridizations, Mulvey’s deconstruction of the gaze, and Butler’s and Tasker’s respective conceptualizations of gender, I argue that female characters problematize and complicate the otherwise unques- tioned authority of Batman’s surveillance assemblage in the 1986-2011 DC continuity. 1 “Batman Day Returns!” DC Comics. 14 June 2016, www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/06/14/batman-day- returns.
