Annual Report 2004/05 Page 3 Presidents Report

eason 2004/05 has been a terrific learning experience for the entire club, and especially for myself in my first year in the position of President. It was Sonly two years ago, prior to the season 2003/04 season, that I decided to join the Maccabi Ajax club committee for the first time. The President, Simeon Goldenberg, asked me also to act as his Vice President for the season, a responsibility I thoroughly enjoyed but without the envisagement that it would lead to me taking over as President for this season. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed this season immensely, and feel that the club will continue to grow and be a great place to be around for all players, members and supporters. It is an honour to be so involved with our great club.

It was definitely a season encompassing many changes, myself being President being only one of those. Matt Aubor acted as Vice President and despite being forced off the field all season with a knee injury, Matty was the quintessential clubman and I am grateful for his assistance – especially when it came to tasks less suited to me, such as “hucking” people for money, as well as organising events and motivating others to help out. Tim Goodman did a brilliant job in his first year as club secretary, and his experience and leadership is a great asset to the club. The club would not survive if not for the many hours of voluntary effort that committee members and others put in, and I am very thankful to everyone for the time they give.

Without a doubt one of the biggest changes to happen to the club in some years was our on-field promotion of the 1st and 2nd XI to the V.T.C.A. Senior A division, arguably equal of the highest level ever played at in the history of the club. The first XI got off to a fantastic start by defeating eventual premiers Royal Park/Brunswick in Round 1, however the high standard of opposition resulted in the side struggling to put wins on the board. To finish 9th with three wins in a horribly rain-affected season – and importantly avoid relegation – was a tremendous effort from Shawne Rubinstein’s men. The jump to Senior A division was never going to be an easy one for the 1st XI, but I have no doubt that the side is ‘better for the ’ and with a year’s experience now under their belts, will give it an even better crack in 2005/06.

Shawne has indicated that he will most likely be stepping down from the captaincy role before next season, and I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank Shawne for the incredible leadership he has shown at the club for the past few seasons as of the 1st XI. The club achieved some fantastic on-field results throughout the 04/05 the season, with the 2nd, 3rd and 5th XI teams all making finals and the 2nd XI narrowly missing

AnnualPage 3 Report 2004/05 Page 4 Presidents Report out on a premiership. Allan Sheffield and Craig Woolf - both in their first seasons as captains of the 2nd and 3rd XI respectively – led their sides from the front and proved great leaders of their sides, while 5th XI captain David Treger also showed incredible patience, resolve and determination in getting his side into a semi-final. Numbers for the lower XI’s, particularly early in the season, were a scarce resource with a number of players unavailable at certain times, and David’s efforts in putting a team on the park each week must be applauded. Finally Daniel Eckhaus, who captained the 4th XI for the first time, should be commended for the manner in which he has developed some of the club’s most promising junior players. Youngsters such as Mark Soffer, David Fayman, Clinton Bricker and Ben Scholl are all names that will undoubtedly shape the club in the years to come, and this shapes as an exciting prospect for the future. The club is also indebted to the services provided by our four coaches. Mark Simon, Phil Burman, Joey Silver and Steve Sandor have been a fantastic influence for the players in providing guidance throughout the season, and I cannot stress how thankful the club is to have you all involved. Special thanks also to Adam Carew for the diplomacy and energy he put into his role as Chairman of Selectors, and to Laurie Schneider who proudly and generously devotes his every Saturday afternoon to score for the 1st XI. This was actually only my second year on the club committee, and despite my inexperience, our committee this season was a strong one and I would like to thank all of the committee members for their contributions in making this season a success. Without wanting to sound like a broken record, it is now more obvious to me that the amount of time it takes to administer and run this club is immense, and without the continued efforts of our committee it would not be possible to survive, let alone thrive. The costs associated with running the club make it absolutely vital that our fundraising efforts yield positive results, and this season many people have contributed in a number of ways that have been fundamental to achieving our targets. In particular, we held several events that not only raised money but also added greatly to the fabric of the club. The $1000 Reverse Raffle day was again a success while the 2nd Cygnet Cup Past Players match was a highlight for all involved. Indeed, the Past Players Association is a concept that began two years ago as the brainchild of David Harris, and has unlimited potential in terms of harnessing the fabric of past players and bringing them back to the club. I would also like to thank Michael Sommers, Matty Aubor and Josh Gelfand for providing an entertainingly memorable presentation night dinner, made all the more special by the presence and speeches of many club legends including Les Kausman, Stan Woolf, Harry Newhouse and David Mandie. The “Salute” party held in March was the third party that the club has put on in 18 months in conjunction with the Maccabi Netball Club, and these

Annual Report 2004/05 Page 5 Presidents Report events continue to go from strength to strength. To see Toorak’s Sanctuary Bar filled with between 550 and 600 people is testament to the great young people involved at our club. I feel the club is presently in a fantastic position in terms of the quality of cricket, the quality of people and the general “vibe” that lingers around the place. I look forward to continuing this into season 2005/06, and I encourage anyone - current players, past players, wives, girlfriends - to get involved where they can. Whether it be offering your services on game day to make lunches, helping coordinate training, organising fundraising events, joining the committee, providing sponsorship, or even coming down and cheering, it is all appreciated and welcomed! Lastly, I would like to acknowledge that of the 13 players heading to Israel in July to represent in cricket at the 17th Maccabiah Games, 10 players come from our own club here in Melbourne. This in itself is a monumental achievement and we wish the guys every success in bringing home a gold medal. Thank you all for a great season – onwards and upwards towards making season 05/06 even better! Paul Fink President

TELL IT LIKE IT IS Well done to the 2nd XI on reaching the Grand Final. Next year let’s go one better! Joel Beebe I would like to congratulate Jeremy Weiss on winning the Rob Laurie Most Determined Cricketer award. I have got no doubt that Jeremy’s determination will contribute to him becoming a successful 1st XI cricketer and a leader of the Maccabi-Ajax Cricket Club. Simon Feldman Thank you to everyone on the committee, and also the coaches and players for all your hard work, effort and dedication throughout season 2004/05. See you next season! Finky

Barry Kave received a call from Bomber Murray in early June, and within minutes, word was spreading that Maccabi Ajax were to be offered promotion to Senior A1. A short while later an email poll was held to determine if we, as a club, would accept the invitation. The result was overwhelmingly in favour of promotion, and all of the sudden, the stakes were raised. No longer could we coast by, knocking up wins and statistics against the likes of South Yarra and Murumbeena. All runs, wickets and wins would be hard won, and unfortunately, there weren’t too many of all three. Therefore, on the surface, it appears as if the firsts had ordinary season. And whilst we’d have loved to have had a couple of more wins, there were a number of things that we could be proud of in 2004/05. In avoiding relegation, we achieved more than many other teams that have been promoted. Moordialloc, Aspendale and Strathmore have all been straight up and straight down in recent years, whereas we ended up safe by a couple of ladder positions, with two South teams finishing below us. Other highlights the first XI can be proud of include: • We were one of only two teams to defeat Royal Park, the premiership side • Of all Senior A1 clubs, we took the 4th highest number of wickets, and one more would have had us equal second • We had two players make their debuts in the firsts (Jared Raleigh and Daniel Svirskis), as well as three others who had very little first XI experience (Jonty Rosenthal, Marc Lipsitz and Josh Harris). • Despite only winning three games for the season, the players representing the first XI each week were still extremely positive, always put the team first, and ensured that despite results not being how we’d have liked them, the enjoyment of playing cricket in a club environment was never lost Congratulations to Daniel Onas for winning the Ray Saffer and the Club Champion. Daniel’s season, particularly with the ball, was outstanding. In 2003/04, Daniel took 23 wickets at 15, and despite this year bowling against higher quality of batsmen, took 25 wickets at 13. He finished the third leading taker in the competition and was also our second leading run scorer. Garry Litinsky and David Harris were other excellent contributors with the ball, both just about matching their 2003/04 seasons at the higher level, and David Gelbart, Adam Carew and Joel Beebe all made contributions, Dave’s six wickets for the game against Bentleigh being a stand out. And although Marc Lipsitz and Daniel Svirskis did not bowl a large number of overs, both showed enough to give confidence that they are ready to step up to the plate in 2005/06. Marc’s crucial wicket (and batting performance) against East Brighton went a long way to us

Annual Report 2004/05 Page 7 winning that game, and Daniel’s spell against Seddon, including a wicket with the second ball he bowled in the firsts, helped put us back in with a chance of winning. The batting was extremely disappointing this year, and not having a player qualify for the averages summed it up perfectly. We really struggled against high quality fast bowling, and didn’t handle short pitched stuff at all well. There were very few partnerships where we dominated for an extended period, and not having a 50 run partnership for any of the first three wickets for the entire meant we were always starting behind the eight ball. Having said that, some individual innings from Daniel Onas, Sam Frey and Adam Carew were excellent contributions, and Jonty’s 46 in round 1, made in difficult conditions, was one of the standout knocks of the year. All in all, it was a disappointing year, but an enjoyable one nonetheless, which speaks volumes for the character of the players representing the side, and of those who support it. And I want to sincerely thank some of the people that have supported the side during the year. Thank you to: • Laurie Schneider, not only for scoring for us every week, but also for the insight you provide from the numbers you jot into the scorebook. Congratulations on having the best kept scorebook in the VTCA! • Steve Sandor, for the quality time spent helping us, the terrific advice you provide me and all of the guys and for ensuring the first XI is a more professional outfit that it otherwise might be. • Mark Simon, for everything. I’d too much to the printing costs of this book if I listed everything, but for running the nets, organising afternoon tea, being our number one supporter etc etc etc, all of the guys are truly thankful. • Joe Silver, not only for the coaching, but also for the confidence and words of encouragement you had for me prior to taking on the role three years ago, and all the way through it. • Phil Burman, for the many hours you’ve spent helping out not only the firsts players, but the entire club, with all of the coaching that you have provided. • Adam Carew – is there a less glamorous job than Chairman of Selectors. Thanks for putting up with the tough conditions we threw you into, and for handling it brilliantly. I can’t remember a tougher selection year, and if not for you, most nights would have finished at 3am! • Daniel Onas, who provided great support as vice captain • Allan, Craig, Daniel and David – thanks fellow captains, and congratulations to Sheff and Craig on leading their teams into the finals. • Paul Fink, for being the only bloke that does more than Mark Simon. I doubt if there’s a more respected person at the club – thank you for everything you’ve done during 2004/05. • And to Sam, Kavey and Harry, whom I could always ask for advice during and between games

Annual Report 2004/05 Page 8 And finally, I want to finish off by being a bit self-indulgent. This is the last time I’ll be preparing one of these, so I thought I’d list some of the highlights of my three year tenure. It’s been a terrific period, but it was only possible because of the support that the players, the committee and the coaches have provided. These are the moments that I’ll remember until Alzheimer’s kicks in: • When we bowled out Moordialloc for a first innings Grand Final win. To be cheered off by the ground by the rest of the club, family and friends made us all, for a brief moment, feel like test cricketers • The 20 minute period where we took 5/3 in the same game. When Matty bowled Weerasinghe, it was mayhem, we were celebrating so hard we almost broke into a Hora! • The day we hit 300 against Middle Park, with Sammy smacking a four off the final ball to get us there • Simeon and Gary’s 122 run last wicket partnership against Moorabbin Park • Daniel Kave’s 450 run 2003/04 season, couple with Matty’s 34 wickets • Beating Cheltenham at Cheltenham, with Leon’s 82 leading the way • Some spectacular catches, notably Simeon’s against Cheltenham, Harry’s against Moorabbin Park and Jonty’s skied catch this season • Sam’s run out in the semi final against Middle Park, and Gary’s opening spell in the same game

Annual Report 2004/05 Page 10 Second XI Captain’s Report

What a fantastic year of cricket the 2nd XI had this year. It was truly an honour to captain a group that continuously put their teammates first before themselves and who played with passion and fun. No wonder we had a successful year every time we were in trouble, which happened to be on many occasions, we had 11 guys raise the bar for each other. It was that kind gutsy of season with over 25 players playing over the season which created a new look 2nd XI and finished the home and away season only 1 point from top spot in a higher grade, not a bad effort. The 2nd XI is an important glue in the club providing opportunities to Senior A1 which saw 5 debutantes take part in, well done to Mark Lipsitz, Daniel Svirskis, Josh Harris, Daniel Kaplan and Jared Raleigh, and is a stepping stone for the 3rd XI which saw Adam Zemski and Darren Seidl make their debut. This year saw a new look with many young faces showing skill and talent. There was some special personal achievements. Firstly Daniel Svirskis proved to be what damage he could do bowling with some devastating consistency and class, and also poise with the bat. Daniel’s 9 wickets in the first innings of the grand final was not only the best performance in a VTCA Grand final but was inspirational. Well done Daniel on a great year. Mark Lipsitz took his bowling to the next step this year playing many games in the 1st XI and continuously took big wickets all year. Hayden Lipsitz was ‘aksed’ to hold down number 5 and pushed his way up to fours with true grit and determination, watch out for this kid next year. Jared Raleigh shot play and presence at the crease took the club by storm in a shortened season. Steve Todes bounced back in Feb piling on the runs. Joel Beebe, blasted Bentleigh out of the park some great fast bowling. Josh Gelfand returned to the side and had a great year with the gloves and Josh Harris took his chances and proved solid with the gloves and bat. We also saw some Rising Stars, a special mention must go to Adam Zemski who had no trouble with the ball in the higher eleven and consistently put in. David Majtlis showed glimpses of brilliance and will be another one to watch next year. Saul Newstat played a cameo in the last round and with a full season could do some real damage in this grade. The comeback kids had a good year too, Adam Hoppe had a “very good” season helping us get over the line on many occasions. Simeon Goldenberg took some great wickets in the Semi-Final and showed great consistency and skill during the season. David Freund graced us after a season off and was brilliant with the bat when he played. Other special mentions were David Gelbart who performed brilliantly in both first and second elevens. I especially commend him on his performance with the bat in the final series when asked to do a job. Daniel Kaplan had a great start to the year and was easily the best fielder in the 2nd XI. For those I have not mentioned I say thank you to you and the latter for giving me the opportunity to lead you through the year, it was a true pleasure and helped me become a better

Annual Report 2004/05 Page 11 cricketer. I am very proud of the group that played in one of the highest grade Grand Finals for the 2nd XI, especially after a few years without finals in the lower grade. This success is a great credit to the club, the committee and the players that the 2nd XI is now a force to be reckoned with in Senior A2. Looking forward to next year, I say BRING IT ON! Annual Report 2004/05 Page 13 Third XI Captain’s Report

Looking back on my first year as captain I would say it was my most gratifying and definitely most challenging for me personally. I know most of the players who were under me would say it was certainly a unique style of captaincy with just about everyone offering their view points. This settled down in the second half of the year as we built a leadership group including Marc Felman and Benji Einfeld – both of whom were invaluable in helping us reach the semi final. Many players contributed to our success this season. I will try to point out the highlights of some of our key players. Benji played every game of the year, offering not only advice, but putting his hand up to play whatever role was required, including Keeping in one match, opening the bowling for half the season, batting at 3 early on and generally helping with field placements and tactics. His highlight for me would be seeing him smashing the Highett spinner to all parts. Marc joined us in the second half of the season and while he began well with the bat dominating three games, it is with the ball where he showed us he is truly an all rounder – culminating in the semi-final where he took career defining figures of 4/14 off 10 in a pressure situation. His on field leadership was invaluable, knowing just what to say at the right time to help us get that vital wicket or spur on a tiring bowler. The spin twins, Darren Seidl and Mark Faber, both had excellent seasons and had we not had so many rain affected matches would surely both have ended up in the 2nds. Darren bowled long searching spells and was often only thwarted by poor umpiring decisions from the opposition, or worse – bad fielding resulting in dropped catches. Mark bowled beautiful line and length and often made the opposition batsmen look like tailenders. Of course apart from joining Darren as our key offensive weapons notably when bowling (but equally brilliant umpiring together), Mark also had a defensive role to play – Night Watchmen. And against Mackinnon he took this form of batting to a new level – managing to frustrate the opposition for an entire day finishing with 27 not out after batting through the day for 72 overs – helping secure a semi-final berth. Darren did his part to confuse the opposition by batting at 3 and making 26. This followed one of the highlights of the year early in the season when he opened the batting against Caulfield and in the second over he faced he started his scoring with a towering 6. This was the game for cameos and apart from young Darren Faiman debuting in the 3rds, and taking a wicket, David Gelbart popped in to smash the opposition to all parts of the ground taking our score from 86 in the 26th over to 172 after 36 – the last 5 going for 71 after we passed their score. I mentioned earlier Benji took the gloves (for one game), but in any given game we had up to 4 keepers selected, including Matthew Slutzkin who started the year as our opener, Ben Kave, once back from studies, Josh Gelfand and Josh Harris both of whom were unlucky to

Annual Report 2004/05 Page 14 end their year with us – though Harris played a pivotal role in the semi and nearly helped steal the match at the finish. It was often easier to work out the than who should keep. The find of the season was clearly Saul Newstadt, who at one stage pushed his way into the seconds and with a longer pre-season may knock on the door of the ones. I can only hope that studies don’t keep him away from us, and this goes for the young superstar Josh Sacks whose interrupted year will only serve to make him more determined to succeed next year. The rising star award for the threes had several nominees with Darren Bloch and Mark Soffer staking their claims and looking like good future prospects – but it was clear that a big part of the future of Jewish Cricket will be Nick Marks. His batting skills are sublime, and hopefully his innings on our unprotected wickets will help teach him to value his wicket more as he goes up the grades. He also has a smart head on his shoulders highlighted by his big partnership with Rod Vadas against Cheltenham. There were many other players who contributed to making my year as captain enjoyable, including Ben Fisher (with his Israeli style cricket), Adam Zemski – who was harder to get the ball off than anyone I’ve met – and a more determined player I haven’t seen. With more application early in the season he will be at least a two’s bowler but his batting will be the key. He definitely has a big part to play in the future of our club and has many years of excellent cricket in him. And Paul Fink – our president – who did everything asked of him on the field and more and never once complained – like others, travel impacted his season. Others who made me laugh and cry at the same time included Dean Simon and Jeremy Hoppe – two future stars of the club with both one solid performance away from realizing there potential. Dean is one of the few bowlers coming through with real pace, and Jeremy is VERY GOOD with both bat and ball but it is his positive, laughing, smiling face that made captaining him such a joy. There were some hard decisions most also, most notably the decision during the semi to drop Bronson and then the even harder one to promote him over Faber when the game became a one-dayer. Both players took this as well as could be hoped. Personally the highlight of my year apart from the captaincy, was the hat-trick in the semi and then smacking a few sixes on one ankle. To Bronson and Gelf (also for putting in scores!) who took the hat-trick catches – thanks. To Marc and Benji– your support was invaluable. It would be remiss of me not to thank a few other people – most notably my wife, Alissa for letting me captain – I spent more time at the club doing selections and announcing teams, (not to mention training and playing) than any captain has in previous years due to all the washouts. Equally deserving of thanks is Adam Carew – who spent just as much time, as we argued the merits of one keeper or batsmen versus another. The biggest regret that I have is that we could not hit 10 more runs in that semi-final. If we can take anything away from this year it is that just about every player in the team (and most notably all of the semi-final team including 12th man Faber) should be in the two’s. Almost

Annual Report 2004/05 Page 15 every player had interrupted seasons or was affected by the amount of rain we had. Every player can look in the mirror and know that the 3rds Semi is NOT where they should have finished their season – because they are all good enough to have played in the 2’s. Annual Report 2004/05 Page 17 Fourth XI Captain’s Report

This was my first year as captain of the 4th XI, and one could say the season was a frustrating one for all concerned. Inexperience, a lack of depth and at times, a lack of numbers, saw us finish in the middle of the table, which can be looked at as being fairly disappointing. The main highlight of the season was a comprehensive victory over the premiers for the past season, Hampton.

But behind the disappointment, there is also a lot of positives to come out of the season;

* The emergence of talented youngsters Mark Soffer, Clinton Bricker (who took a marvellous 5 wicket haul in the final game), Jason Sherwin, Ben Scholl, Brett Weiner and the recipient of the ‘Michael Klinger Trophy’, Darren Bloch.

* The “help”, as I like to call it, from talented 3rd XI players such as Paul Fink, Ben Fisher, Matthew Slutzkin and Dean Simon, all of whom I hope can continue to play a high level of cricket at the club

* the return of Michael and Steven Leigh, who helped to add a great balance to the side.

I would like to thank Barry Kave for all his help during this season. Barry managed to take a few wickets (although I am sure he would have liked a few more runs) and I hope the younger members of the side learned a fair bit about the game through his play and involvement.

I wish everyone the best of luck for next season and maybe with some smart cricket we can be in the finals next season

Annual Report 2004/05 Page 20 Fifth XI Captain’s Report

The 2004/2005 season was a most successful one for the 5th XI. The club was able to introduce a long list of junior players to Turf cricket and I hope their affiliation with the club will be long and rewarding as mine has been. Unfortunately the club struggled for numbers and as a consequence a total of 43 individuals represented the 5th XI during the season, many of whom went on to represent higher elevens.

I am very proud of the results we achieved during the season, and with the enthusiasm with which the team played. The players remained committed throughout the season and a fantastic team spirit prevailed, we were rewarded with a spot in the semi-final although the eventual premiers narrowly beat us. We played 13 games, won 7, lost 5 and drew 1 to finish 4th on the ladder.

My personal highlights were as follows: The two narrow wins over the grand finalists, Power House and Barnawartha North; the successful transition of many of our younger players to senior cricket and the success of many of the senior members of the side, with whom I have played most of my cricket over the last few years.

Batting: Firstly I would like to congratulate Tim Goodman on winning the batting award. Scoring 299 runs at 17.6 for the side and a couple more for the club during the season rewarded his consistency, patience and dedication. Unfortunately as with many of the higher XI’s runs were hard to come by and only two other players achieved 100 runs for the season, although I should mention that every time anyone got a score they were rewarded with promotion to a higher XI.

Individual highlights included 4 X 50’s: • Mathew Slutzkin 74 – Round 2 vs Brighton East • Darren Bloch 62 – Round 11 vs Reds (He was also rewarded with the Michael Klinger ‘Rising star’ award in his rookie season) • Tim Goodman 57 – Round 5 vs Barnawartha North • Paul Fink 52 – Round 6 vs Burnley CYMS A couple of others came pretty close but just missed out.

Bowling: We were fortunate to have Daniel Eckhaus double up and play a number of games for us when we were unable to find enough players. Winning the bowling averages with 21 wickets at 7.9, and a magnificent individual effort in the semi-final where he took 9 out of the 14 opposition wickets rewarded his efforts.

Individual highlights included 4 X 5 wicket hauls: • My own 7-40 – Round 9 vs Barnawartha North • Daniel Eckhaus 6-23 – SF vs Power House • Jamie Hyams 5-41 – Round 3 vs Reds

Numerous other players excelled in the field and with the bat or ball, and everyone’s efforts were deeply valued.

Annual Report 2004/05 Page 21 I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Laurie Schneider and Tim Goodman for their assistance during the season. They were able to step in and captain the side in my absence and their involvement was invaluable during the season.

I must also bid everyone a sad farewell, as I will now be retiring along with Ron Gaspar. Many of us “older” guys have played alongside each other for a couple of years and I will forever be indebted to the club for the many happy memories, friendships and opportunities that I have gained through my 10 year association. I do however hope to continue assisting the club in some capacity.

I look forward to the prospects of even better performances next season if we only build on this one. I would like to thank my wife, the committee, Adam Carew (chairman of selectors) and all the players who represented the 5th XI for a most enjoyable season and wish them all every success for the future.
