THEATRICAL & PERFORMING ARTS 1 - 8 Syllabus Amendment Sheet

Changes made in the 3rd Edition, 2016

THEATRICAL & PERFORMING ARTS - Introduction

Themed Examinations A themed examination uses one musical only from which all demonstrations and knowledge is chosen by the Teacher. For example, for Theatrical & Performing Arts 5, the Musical History, Dialogue and Song & Movement prepared for examination may all be taken from the musical ‘Mary Poppins’.

Teachers may use music from their chosen musical for the routines and this music may include lyrics. For Classical routines, Teachers are encouraged to use music from their chosen musical, but the music must be suitable for Classical . A suitable option from Mary Poppins would ‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite’ and from Alice in Wonderland, ‘Painting the Roses Red’.

Regardless of lyrics and style, it should be noted that all routines, including classical routines, must include the steps listed in this syllabus for incorporation in the routine.

Themed Examinations are optional.

Optional Musicals In addition to the musicals listed in this syllabus, teachers may choose from three additional musicals for each grade. These may be found on the Comdance website, and will be changed periodically. If one of these optional musicals is chosen, it is substituted in place of a musical in this syllabus.

If an optional musical is selected, the accompanying dialogue posted on the website must be used.

The optional musicals may be used for any level, from 1 to 8.

On the Examination day, Teachers must supply the following information about the chosen optional musical: 1 the name of the Candidate 2 the name of the musical the Candidate is working from 3 the names of the songs being performed as well as their lyrics 4 the names of the chosen characters and the dialogue excerpt being presented by the Candidate. A printout with this information must be placed on the Examiner’s desk at the beginning of the Examination day.

Please find the optional musicals at www.comdance.org under under Teachers/ Exam Info/Musical Theatre. The information can be downloaded as a PDF file. 1 THEATRICAL & PERFORMING ARTS 1 - 8 Syllabus Amendment Sheet
