It is not new for OVATIONS to bring shows to our young people that relate to what is actually going on in their lives. Spring Awakening once again allows OVATIONS students to be able to explore mature material in a safe space allowing them to have very open and frank conversations that for young people are often skirted around or all together ignored. During our process we’ve been able to discuss and explore some of the darker themes found in the material; teen suicide, sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, sexu- al exploration, to name just a few. As a company we were able to talk about resources and options available to our students and those they know who deal with these issues. What is astounding is that these themes and circumstances are as prevalent to- day as they were back in the 1800s when the original text was written for this piece. Miller This dissertation examines the rhetoric of social movement leadership and hegemony in the musical Wicked, suggesting that the musical offers “equipment for living” to its audience members. Constructing a rhetorical text using the New York performance script, sheet music, cast recording, and three performances of Wicked, I analyzed the musical through an extended version of cluster criticism, clustering themes rather than terms to form meanings. Chapter 1 of this dissertation provides an introduction to the study, a rationale, and a preview to the rest of the dissertation. Chapter 2 presents a literature review that informs the rest of the study. This chapter includes literature on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its many offspring, as well as a brief history of American musical theatre and its use as a method of societal critique.

    The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival Newsletter • Spring 2012 Broadway Stars to Shine at Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival Arriving directly from the acclaimed Broadway revival of South Pacific to appear in the same leading role on the PSF main stage last summer, William Michals returns in the title role in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Variety proclaimed that he has “a voice that knows no boundaries”—an ideal match for Sondheim’s brilliant, tantalizing score. With Broadway credits including Beauty and the Beast (the Beast and later returning to play Gaston) and the national tours of Les Misérables ( Javert), The Scarlet Pimpernel (Chauvelin), and The Music Man (Harold Hill), Michals also brought his magic to the concert stage at PSF last sum- mer. He will again perform a one-night-only event, Broadway in Concert II, on June 24. “We’re fortunate that the same voice that has reverberated in Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and in symphony halls across the nation will once again echo in Labuda,” says Dennis Razze, asso- ciate artistic director and director of Sweeney Todd. “Working at PSF was a dream last summer during South Pacific, and I’m really excited to be working with Dennis again,” says Michals. “I am looking forward to his guidance on this beauti- ful production.” Playing Mrs. Lovett, the meat pie-making accomplice of Sweeney Todd, is Dee Roscioli—a national treasure (and local hero- ine) known for her long run as Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway and in the Chicago, San Francisco, and national touring productions of the hit musical.

    A WORD FROM THE PRODUCERS We are so pleased to be at the Gershwin Theatre with all of you tonight for the fourth annual Arts for Autism Concert. It’s wonderful to see familiar faces from previous years and to have so many new people with us, too. Whether it’s your first time or not, the evening is always filled with “firsts” for so many here. Every year more than 150 students from across the country step onto the Gershwin stage to perform on Broadway for the first time. They are joined by a featured young artist on the spectrum who also make their first appearance on Broadway. For some of you, the show also provides a “first” glimpse of what it means to have autism. As the event has grown over the years, its impact and reach have expanded. In addition to raising more money we continue to share people’s stories, increase awareness and encourage acceptance; casting a wider net with each show. The show's reach extends beyond the audience to include each student performer, their families, guest speakers, the Broadway performers and our entire behind- the-scenes crew. It continues to extend to each person that they share their story with after the show. In past years, we have dedicated the show to parents and siblings of people on the spectrum. This year we dedicate the show to the care-givers and teachers who support them. Once again we have a blockbuster Broadway cast ready to bring the house down along with added energy and excitement of more than 185 talented students joining them on stage! After our “first” show, we didn’t think we would ever be able to top it.
