The press speculation that harness racing would be transferred to Doomben and greyhounds to the Ipswich area, was only that, speculation. There will be no decisions made in relation to the future of Albion Park until the evaluation is completed and the options explored. The Board is still keen to investigate the introduction of a breeder’s incentive Affordable Land scheme, but has received no real responses. We are not seeking comprehensive submissions, just a few dot point ideas or a few notes on what you like to see in a scheme would be appreciated. They can be faxed or e-mailed if you wish. Please let us have your ideas. Finally, there has been a comprehensive review undertaken of the rules following the expansion of the National Rules. The new Board rules will be put out for consultation in the near future and I would appreciate any views you have regarding them. I wish to thank Daryl Kays for his diligence in undertaking this less than interesting task. Au revoir for another month.

There are only two greyhounds in the race and it seems pretty uncompetitive as the favourite is 10- 1 on and the other is priced at 40-1 against. Nonetheless, he makes his way to the counter and asks to place $500 on the outsider. Being a friendly sort, the bookmaker tries to put him off the bet and assures the customer the outsider has absolutely no chance against the favourite but the man is insistent and demands the bet be placed. The bookmaker tries again to convince the man he’d be losing his money but eventually agrees to take the bet and gleefully deposits the money into his till. They both then watched the race on the television and, horror of horrors, the favourite runs teh worst race of its life and the outsider cruises home. The customer was straight back to the counter and demanding his winnings. “No problem,” said the bookmaker, “I will happily pay you what you have won” and counted out the $20,000. As he did so, he confided to the man, “You are amazingly lucky - between you and me, I actually own the outsider that you bet on and he is so slow, even I didn’t back it”.
