Theatre Lawrence Presents ‘ Theatre Lawrence presents ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ Posted by Bob Evans For Immediate Release Contact: Mary Doveton (785) 843-7469 x205 Some Enchanted Evening Pop the champagne and sip some bubbly as Theatre Lawrence kicks off its Summer Series with Some Enchanted Evening – The Songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Opening June 4th this nostalgic musical will be performed on the outdoor stage. This showcase of musical numbers from some of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s greatest shows is a wonderful way to welcome back live musical performances here at Theatre Lawrence. More than those of any composer or lyricist writing for the stage, the songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein have become an integral part of our everyday lives. We sing them in the shower; we dance to them in ballrooms; we hear them on the radio and in clubs and, yes, in elevators and supermarkets, too. This stunning collection of Rodgers & Hammerstein compositions places five performers in a theatrical setting: first ‘backstage,’ where the songs are sung as personal interplay, and then ‘onstage,’ where the songs are presented to an audience. Offering its performers an opportunity to explore timeless songs within their own styles and sensibilities, Some Enchanted Evening delights its audience with a glorious parade of genuine hits including musical numbers from Broadway favorites, The Sound of Music, The King and I, South Pacific, Oklahoma!, and more! The cast includes Carly Graefe, Ryan Hamlin, Patrick Kelly, Secily Rees, and Sarah Young. Directed by Mary Doveton. Music Direction by Susan Hash-Hires. Choreography by Molly Gordon. Stage Managed by Kathi Killman Set and Lighting Design by James Diemer. Sound Design by Bob Newton. Costuming by Jane Pennington. Props by Marilyn Brobst. THE MUSICO-DRAMATIC EVOLUTION OF RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN’S SOUTH PACIFIC DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By James A. Lovensheimer, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Arved Ashby, Adviser Professor Charles M. Atkinson ________________________ Adviser Professor Lois Rosow School of Music Graduate Program ABSTRACT Since its opening in 1949, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Pulitzer Prize- winning musical South Pacific has been regarded as a masterpiece of the genre. Frequently revived, filmed for commercial release in 1958, and filmed again for television in 2000, it has reached audiences in the millions. It is based on selected stories from James A. Michener’s book, Tales of the South Pacific, also a Pulitzer Prize winner; the plots of these stories, and the musical, explore ethnic and cutural prejudice, a theme whose treatment underwent changes during the musical’s evolution. This study concerns the musico-dramatic evolution of South Pacific, a previously unexplored process revealing the collaborative interaction of two masters at the peak of their creative powers. It also demonstrates the authors’ gradual softening of the show’s social commentary. The structural changes, observable through sketches found in the papers of Rodgers and Hammerstein, show how the team developed their characterizations through musical styles, making changes that often indicate changes in characters’ psychological states; they also reveal changing approaches to the musicalization of the novel. Studying these changes provides intimate and, occasionally, unexpected insights into Rodgers and Hammerstein’s creative methods.

Sullivan Medical Center 1220 West Jackson Sullivan, Illinois MASTERING MODERN -- - Artistic Director Seth Reines, Musical Director Jason Yarcho, Education Director Marie Jagger Taylor and I have recently conducted actor auditions and technical personnel interviews for the 2007 summer season company. We attended the Midwest Theatre Auditions at Wehster University in St. Louis where 55 different theatres auditioned over 400 young actors and actresses and interviewed about 100 theatre technicians. 84 children auditioned here in Sullivan for the children's roles in THE SOUND OF MUSIC and over 65 adults attended our Sullivan auditions. And ... we saw another 87 people at our Actors' Equity Association audition call in Chicago. (In addition, Seth Reines attends other auditions in his role as Artistic Producer for the Prather Family Dinner Theatres and has seen over 700 people.) From all of this, we will assemble a company of approximately 100 people including only 30-35 different actors. I am sure that we have found talented performers who will produce the quality productions that you have become accustomed to here at The Little Theatre On The Square. We are glad you are here and we know you will enjoy the show.

  • South Pacific by Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua
Young Critics Reviews Fall 2011-2012 South Pacific By Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan At the Hippodrome Theatre through October 9 By Amanda Sztein UNBALANCED SOUTH PACIFIC FAILS TO COMMIT The characters, writers and production staff of “South Pacific” all failed to commit. The writers were tempted by a myriad of themes, plots and subplots. Unforgiving accents, repetitive songs and lack of direction tempted the characters. The production staff could not decide on a single style throughout the show. The combination of these three factors results in an amount of temptation equaled only by a supposedly faithful boyfriend at a lingerie fashion show. Both the original material and the current execution of this acclaimed Broadway musical, now at the Hippodrome Theatre, suffer from this indecision. The original 1949 run of “South Pacific” garnered 10 Tony awards, while the 2008 revival earned seven more. These are very misleading figures, as “South Pacific” has several internal flaws that even the best production could not overcome. “South Pacific” is based on James A Michener’s collection of short stories. The attempt to tackle many different themes and stories creates a show with far too many plots and subplots. The musical both starts and ends with the tumultuous relationship between Southern nurse Nellie Forbush (Katie Reid) and exiled Frenchman Emile de Becque’s (Marcelo Guzzo), who experience many trials and tribulations due to his Polynesian children from a previous marriage. Had the play explored this theme fully, it would have been more controversial, especially in the 1940s, but would also have had a more cohesive energy.
