North Wales, and the wider world, last weekend, one of the commonly asked questions was ‘Why didn’t the ref stop the game?’

Really, the answer is obvious – when you can win or lose a league based on points difference, you can’t stop a game from going to its full duration. Had the ref stopped the game at 100- 0 and Llanidloes be denied promotion because someone else had a better points difference, there would have been understandable uproar.

Had this been a cup match, then I im- agine the referee would have thought about ending proceedings early, as all a team needs to do to progress is win – 3-0 is as good as 100-0. But in a league game, it just can’t happen, or else there is no level playing-fi eld for teams. Every referee must allow the game to reach its natural conclu- sion, unless they feel there is a safety issue.

Dai Davies. Cadeirydd, Cyngor Rygbi Gogledd Cymru.”

Hundreds of people are expected to fl ock to Bala this Saturday, September 14th, for a service to celebrate the life of Bryan ‘Yogi’ Davies.

It is also expected that senior fi gures from the Welsh rugby world will be among those at Maes Gwyniad Rugby Club, including WRU President Dennis Gethin, chairman David Pickering and chairman, Peter Thomas.

Members of the Bryan ‘Yogi’ Davies Appeal Fund revealed this week they are closing down and transferring the money in to a new fund to make improvements to Bala Rugby Club.

Tony Parry, club chairman, said: ‘The appeal committee is grateful to all those who have worked so hard over the years and have contributed so generously, initially to get Yogi home and then to enable him to stay home. It’s amazing all the things that have been going on over the years to raise money, all over North Wales. It all kicked off with that one auction of prom- ises in the Bala Leisure Centre, where the place was packed.’

The appeal fund raised more than £200,000 to adapt Bryan’s home in Bala so he could return after three and a half years in hospital. The remaining £10,000 will go towards improving the building for the rugby club’s juniors.

‘Yogi’ had made all the plans for the extension’, Tony added. ‘He had also been round the people who live near the rugby fi eld to explain the plans – that the application was for a new kitchen and room for the juniors to sit down to eat. There was concern that we were applying for a bar, but Yogi, and myself were adamant that a bar would never be part of the plan.

‘We are the only club in North Wales where the kids can’t get food after a match. Hopefully, a year from now, this will have changed’.

A ‘Full Monty’ evening will be held in Neuadd Buddug, Y Bala, on October 19 and a special calendar will be released in the next few weeks, to raise money for the rund.

The service will be followed by refreshments at Bala Golf Club, with shuttle buses operating between there and a designated parking area near Maes Gwyniad. NORTH/MID WALES RUGBY NEWS All the latest news from around the region - please send your club news to [email protected]
