Poza archiwalnymi najbardziej wiarygodne wydają się opublikowane relacje Angeli Potockiej, która nie była jego wychowanką, ale po- przez rodzinę męża znała dobrze rzeczywistość, w jakiej Teodor obracał się w różnych okresach swojego życia, zwłaszcza w młodości. Zapewne nieraz z nim rozmawiała i przypuszczalnie miała do dyspozycji sporą część jego dziennika, który powstawał od późnych lat czterdziestych, oraz potrafiła zamieszczone tam jego refleksje i opinie uzupełnić własnymi obserwacjami czy wnioskami, a nawet oceniać jego poglądy. Chętnie przyjmował uczniów wymienionych mistrzów, lecz nie jest przypadkiem, że także tych, którzy swoją pierwszą szkołę przeszli u Carla Czernego, Józefa Wieniawskiego czy Rudolfa Strobla. Wiele go bowiem z nimi łączyło, tak z perspektywy pedagogicznej refleksji, jak i codziennej pracy przy klawiaturze. Od Czernego przyjął na przykład do swojej klasy Rudolfa Feldaua i Ilkę Horowitz-Bar- nay, od Józefa Wieniawskiego, którego poznał w Rosji, Bolesława Domaniewskiego, Eugeniusza Pankiewicza i Melanię Więckowską, późniejszą swoją asystentkę, a naj- większą liczbę uczniów od Rudolfa Strobla, m.in.

His students lead an impressive list of the greatest artists of the previous century, each influencing the evolution of pianism with their own remarkable style and personality. While Leschetizky was arguably without peer as a pedagogue, many pianists today are unaware of the vast number of compositions that he wrote. These pieces were intended not only for the concert stage, but also as a very specific pedagogical repertoire that he used within his own teaching studio. It is imperative that the pianists of our current generation understand the dual aspects of his contribution to our art form, in order to fully grasp the way in which he has changed the face of pianism.

She was extraordinarily successful as both. As the first American student of the famous European pedagogue Theodore Leschetizky, Zeisler was the fundamental transmitter of his ideas to the United States. Like Leschetizky’s students, her students had to undergo rigorous technical training for months to develop strong fingers and relaxed wrists. Once the training was complete, students worked on repertoire during which Zeisler meticulously studied their unique abilities and worked to develop the highest level of musicality, discipline, self-reliance, individuality, and integrity. Additionally, Zeisler taught her students the importance of intellectual study and effective practice habits. Modeled after Leschetizky, Zeisler taught exclusively in a group class setting. She wrote much about her teaching ideas, which were equivalent to her master teacher’s, and she worked to promote the highest level of music study in the United States. Due to Zeisler’s exceptional talent, magnetic personality, and relentless devotion to music, she became a cultural ambassador for women in music.

The Vienna Tonkünstler-Verein (1885-1929) was established for the sole purpose of providing extensive support to the music and musicians of Vienna. The society became renowned in Vienna for its outstanding performances of chamber music and counted among its members many of the city’s foremost musicians and composers. Johannes Brahms had a significant influence on the society as its honorary president and assisted in establishing its composition competitions, aimed at promoting and reviving under-developed chamber genres. Of particular interest to clarinetists is the Verein’s competition of 1896, which aspired to promote chamber music literature for wind instruments. Brahms’s recently completed chamber works for clarinet were clearly influential in fin-de-siècle Vienna; for of the twelve works chosen as finalists in the competition, ten included the clarinet in the chamber combination. The purpose of this document is to provide an English-language history of the Vienna Tonkünstler-Verein and a thorough account of its1896 competition based on my study of the society’s annual reports.
