As part of my homily at our last Home4Dinner Mass two weeks ago, I led parishioners through a brief guided meditation: imagine yourself sitting with Jesus and what he looks like; take a few moments and experience his love for you; ask him what he loves most about you. People then wrote their first names and what it was that Jesus loved about them on small note cards, which were collected and offered and placed on the altar along with the bread and wine. As we prayed that the Spirit make the fruits of the earth and vine into our spiritual food and drink, so too we prayed that she make us and our gifts into the Body of Christ.

It was a moving moment for many of us, seeing ourselves and some of the gifts God has given us symbolically placed on the Table. I was again moved in the days that followed as I read through the cards. We then entered them anonymously into a spreadsheet, and using technology that is beyond my paygrade, we created the Word Cloud you see here. The larger the word, the more frequently the words appeared on the note cards.

It seems to me that the Word Cloud, a partial representation of who we are as individuals and as a faith community, is worth some prayerful reflection: thanking God for our gifts, asking God to bless other members of our community and to help us see them as God sees us, and more.

There was some feedback which surprised me, however. A few people commented to me that it was difficult to ask and/or hear what Jesus loves about them because they were introduced early in life to a God who was a judge, who focused on failings and kept count. This understanding of God is so far from the experience of God by the author of Psalm 103, which we sang last weekend: “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord does not deal with us according to our sins.” On account of this misunderstanding, we can end up distant from God, displaced from our natural relationship with God, which is in God’s heart.

Our Lenten theme this year is “displacement.” Over the course of these six weeks, we will consider how we and others are displaced from natural and fundamental relationships, with God, with ourselves, with others, with the environment. Whatever the displacement, they all have roots in our relationship with God, so our primary, deepest focus in Lent is to open our hearts to God, to Jesus, to hear how much he loves us. Then in response to that love, we move into right relationship with the rest of creation.

I encourage you to pray through Lent using the booklets our staff created. I am also a fan of two other resources, Sacred Space and Pray As You Go, both of which can be downloaded to your smartphone.

May God bless you richly throughout Lent.
