Rubbish and Recycling Services under Alert Level 2- Waitaki Due to the move into Alert Level 2, most rubbish and recycling services will be up and running. However, because going to Level 2 involves some juggling and rules must still be met, please be patient with staff, and follow any signage or instructions at the following sites. The Waitaki Resource Recovery Park (including the Get Sorted shop) will reo- pen. Due to recycling market challenges, paper can’t be accepted for recycling at this time - but cardboard and all other recyclables are good to go. Waste Management’s Oamaru transfer station will continue to operate, with measures in place to meet Level 2 rules. They’ll confirm the details through their website and other channels. Council’s rural recovery parks (transfer stations) and Palmerston Landfill will return to normal hours at Alert Level 2 as follows (note Winter opening days have now commenced): o Hampden and Omarama - Wednesdays and Sundays, 9am-12pm o Kurow and Otematata - Wednesdays and Sundays, 1pm-4pm Payment at these sites will be by Eftpos only (no cash) and contactless payment is preferred. The rural recovery parks will now also accept recyclables (except paper - cardboard is fine). Recycling bins in Herbert, Enfield and Papakaio will be put back over the coming week, so please allow a few days before you take your recycling to these sites. As mentioned above, paper can’t be recycled at this time, but cardboard is fine. Please be considerate and kind to staff at our sites during this time, they will no doubt be feeling overwhelmed with the volume of rubbish and recycling after so long a break. Carron Cossens: From my side of the counter PART FOUR All work at that time was done by volunteers. I still remember the Museum Committee turning the space where the blue desk sits into a concrete floor. And the painting done under the brush stroke guidance of Gaynor Lines. So many working bees. And the gift of the pink/mauve carpet. As part of these working bees someone advocated to get rid of the donation tiger as it was old and "lowered the look" of the space. I still remember this as one of the times my blood boiled and I voiced the fact. Loudly. Oops. Many of you will know the Tiger is one of the most valuable pieces in the museum historically and speaks to the number eight wire skills of the Waitaki Valley residents. ...continued next issue River-T Vine News HARVEST HAS FINISHED …. We harvested our Riesling last week. A big effort and a huge relief to have another season behind us. It will be remembered as the Covid vintage. So what next…..Well the nets that covered the vineyard come off. All the snips, buckets and gloves get sorted, washed and put away till next years harvest. The rocks that help hold the nets down get removed, the bottom wire on the posts at ground level that was helping to also hold the nets gets lifted a notch so it doesn’t catch on the mower and so it goes… Its cleanup time, getting ready for….. PRUNING. The winter job! Thank you to all of you who supported us during lockdown 4 by purchasing our wine either through website sales or from the local Four Square. Going forward in this uncertain world we have decided we will NOT open the Cellar door in June. We will make a decision about July in the coming weeks. Meanwhile our online store sells all our wine with a click and collect/deliver option or you can purchase it from Kurow Four Square and Kurow Hotel Take care, you’re an awesome community. GEOSCIENCES 09 Annual Conference Oamaru, NZ FIELD TRIP 7 VANISHED WORLD Wednesday 25 November 2009 Leader: Ewan Fordyce Geology Dept, University of Otago BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCE: Fordyce, E. (2009). Vanished World. In: Turnbull, I.M. (ed.). Field Trip Guides, Geosciences 09 Conference, Oamaru, New Zealand. Geological Society of New Zealand Miscellaneous Publication 128B. 13 p. INTRODUCTION The trip has themes of: geological education/ geological sites; regional stratigraphy/ paleontology; and history of geology. It is based around localities from Papakaio to Duntroon-Maerewhenua, North Otago. We will visit a geological visitor centre - Vanished World Centre, Duntroon (www.vanishedworld.co.nz), and significant sites for the Paleogene of southern Canterbury Basin: Cameron's Pit (plant fossils, Cretaceous), Maerewhenua (shallow marine strata, sill, Eocene), and Awamoko-Duntroon (distal marine and unconformities, Oligocene). We will visit 1-2 of the sites specially developed for the public as part of the Vanished World Trail. Text, photos and graphics are by Ewan Fordyce. VANISHED WORLD The Vanished World Trail comprises a self-guided 80 km tour around some 20 geological sites in North Otago, on the coast from Waianakarua (south) to Oamaru (north), and inland to Duntroon in the Waitaki Valley. Sites are on public and private land; access to sites is free, but conditions may be imposed by some landowners. Some sites are close to or on roads, but others require a short walk. The trail is a community initiative developed by locals since 2000, in partnership with the University of Otago, to foster conservation, education and scientific study. The concept of Vanished World arose from local interest in, particularly, research on fossils from the district, but aims to take geology in the broadest sense to the public.

Waitaki Delta Character Description This unit extends from the Otago Region and Waitaki District boundary at the Waitaki River, approximately 20km along the coast to the northern end of Oamaru. This area is the southern part of the outwash fan of the Waitaki River, and the unit extends northwards from the river mouth into the Canterbury Region as well. The coast is erosional and is characterised by a gravel beach backed by a steep consolidated gravel cliff. Nearer the river mouth the delta land surface is lower and there is no coastal cliff. In places, where streams reach the coast, there are steep sided minor ravines that run back from the coast. The land behind is farmed to the clifftop and characterised by pasture, crops and lineal exotic shelter trees. Farm buildings are scattered about but not generally close to the coastal edge. There are a number of gravel extraction sites close to the coast. 2 In the absence of topographical features, the coastal environment has been identified approximately 100m back from the top of the cliff to recognise that coastal influences and qualities extend a small way inland.

Macraes Phase Iii Project Assessment of Economic

1 MACRAES PHASE III PROJECT ASSESSMENT OF ECONOMIC IMPACTS Mike Copeland Brown, Copeland & Co Ltd 14 April 2011 BLH-453174-226-635-V2 2 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Macraes Gold Project commenced operations in 1990 following the granting of initial consents in 1988. In 1992, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006 further consents were issued in relation to various expansions in both the rate of production and physical elements of the mine (pits, waste rock stacks and storage facilities for tailings and process water). In 2002 consent was granted for the development of a heritage and art park (HAP) on the site as part of the land rehabilitation package instead of the land reverting to pasture as initially intended. 1.2 OceanaGold (New Zealand) Limited is now seeking an extension to the consented life of the Macraes Gold Project. The extension called the Macraes Phase III Project will take the consented mine life through to 2020 or potentially longer, instead of the mine closing in 2012. The processing rate and intensity of operations on the site will be slightly higher than current levels, although production at the Fraser’s underground mine is expected to cease at the end of 2014 and current planning is for the Macraes opencast mining operations to be scaled back towards the end of the mine’s life (i.e. in 2019 and 2020). Should the mine no longer be operating after 2020 there will still be employment at the mine site for up to 18 months as rehabilitation works are undertaken. Environmental monitoring work would still be required on an intermittent basis.
