Due to the move into Alert Level 2, most rubbish and recycling services will be up and running. However, because going to Level 2 involves some juggling and rules must still be met, please be patient with staff, and follow any signage or instructions at the following sites.  The Waitaki Resource Recovery Park (including the Get Sorted shop) will reo- pen. Due to recycling market challenges, paper can’t be accepted for recycling at this time - but cardboard and all other recyclables are good to go.  Waste Management’s Oamaru transfer station will continue to operate, with measures in place to meet Level 2 rules. They’ll confirm the details through their website and other channels. Council’s rural recovery parks (transfer stations) and Palmerston Landfill will return to normal hours at Alert Level 2 as follows (note Winter opening days have now commenced): o Hampden and - Wednesdays and Sundays, 9am-12pm o Kurow and Otematata - Wednesdays and Sundays, 1pm-4pm Payment at these sites will be by Eftpos only (no cash) and contactless payment is preferred. The rural recovery parks will now also accept recyclables (except paper - cardboard is fine). Recycling bins in Herbert, Enfield and Papakaio will be put back over the coming week, so please allow a few days before you take your recycling to these sites. As mentioned above, paper can’t be recycled at this time, but cardboard is fine. Please be considerate and kind to staff at our sites during this time, they will no doubt be feeling overwhelmed with the volume of rubbish and recycling after so long a break.

Carron Cossens: From my side of the counter PART FOUR

All work at that time was done by volunteers. I still remember the Museum Committee turning the space where the blue desk sits into a concrete floor. And the painting done under the brush stroke guidance of Gaynor Lines. So many working bees. And the gift of the pink/mauve carpet. As part of these working bees someone advocated to get rid of the donation tiger as it was old and "lowered the look" of the space. I still remember this as one of the times my blood boiled and I voiced the fact. Loudly. Oops. Many of you will know the Tiger is one of the most valuable pieces in the museum historically and speaks to the number eight wire skills of the Waitaki Valley residents.

River-T Vine News

HARVEST HAS FINISHED …. We harvested our Riesling last week. A big effort and a huge relief to have another season behind us. It will be remembered as the Covid vintage.

So what next…..Well the nets that covered the vineyard come off. All the snips, buckets and gloves get sorted, washed and put away till next years harvest. The rocks that help hold the nets down get removed, the bottom wire on the posts at ground level that was helping to also hold the nets gets lifted a notch so it doesn’t catch on the mower and so it goes… Its cleanup time, getting ready for….. PRUNING. The winter job!

Thank you to all of you who supported us during lockdown 4 by purchasing our wine either through website sales or from the local Four Square. Going forward in this uncertain world we have decided we will NOT open the Cellar door in June. We will make a decision about July in the coming weeks. Meanwhile our online store sells all our wine with a click and collect/deliver option or you can purchase it from Kurow Four Square and Kurow Hotel

Take care, you’re an awesome community.

The Silent Piano

This item remained in the wings of the stage for a long time. I had always assumed it was an organ. When you struck a note there was no sound. During rearranging and clearing of the stage wings we discovered it was actually a silent piano. Not only that there was an explanation of the piano and its local origins.

The piano had belonged to the T.A.Munro family. It was particularly useful to Cecil Munro who suffered from progressive deafness.

Although his hearing was degenerating, Cecil was an accomplished piano player. He and sister Mabel would play duets to accompany silent movies in Kurow’s Victory Theatre (now the museum).

He was able to detect when other players sounded a wrong note. Hamish Munro, Cecil’s son, recalled how his father and Aunt Elspeth would would tap out a duet on the kitchen table.

Pianos played a part in home life when you made your own entertainment. Without radio or television being available, each family was responsible for it’s own forms of entertainment. Many people learned musical instruments. This was a boon for local communities who could always find an accomplished pianist to participate at functions.

Silent pianos were an opportunity for students to learn keyboard skills without others in the household having to hear a wrong note. This particular instrument was built in Germany in the 1880s. Silent musical instruments were common for those who wanted to practice music without upsetting family.

Recreation in Waitaki at Level 2 Public health measures when enjoying play, active recreation or sport still need to be adhered to under Level 2 – meaning we are open for business not quite as usual. Our contractors will be inspecting facilities as quickly as possible and removing signs and tape. We expect it may take a couple of days to get around the district. Should any signs or tape remain, please refrain from using until these have been removed. Specific requirements when out and about are: • Wash hands frequently. Try to avoid touching high contact areas such as handrails. • Maintain a register of places you visit and people you come in contact with. • Maintain social distancing of 2 metres and bubbles of no more than 10 people. Don’t bubble hop. • Clean and sanitise equipment before and after use. Do not share equipment. • If unwell, stay home.

Camps: Our Camps will open for the purpose of packing down campsites only, not for recreational camping. Waitaki Lakes Camping grounds will open on Thursday 14th May and close on Monday 1st of June to allow people plenty of time to make plans to get there and pack down sites over that period. - One overnight stay allowed only if needed, unless this is not possible, and then campers are asked to apply to [email protected], in writing, for a longer stay period. - Bring your own hand sanitiser and cleaning supplies if possible - Sign-in to the register at each kiosk on arrival and on leaving - Read the guidance at each noticeboard and on facility doors - Campers are responsible for their own caravans and camp equipment

Playgrounds, parks and reserves, skateparks and drinking fountains: When we move into Level 2, the majority of our facilities will reopen. We need to undertake an inspection of these facilities. Cleaning and unlocking will all need to take place before the public can safely use these again. Public toilets: The majority of these will reopen. In rural areas some of these will remain at only one accessible cubicle open – again, these will be cleaned and inspected prior to reopening so only use if all tape and closed signs are removed. Public tennis courts: Contact tracing and sanitization must be undertaken by users if using our public courts. Avoid sharing of equipment, clean and sanitize surfaces, equipment and hands before and after use. Alps 2 Ocean and walking tracks: Trails and tracks are open – keep up social distancing of 2m from those you don’t know. Avoid tracks where this may be difficult. Keep a contact register with you and be aware of common touch points like gate and rails – clean and sanitise before and after touching. Toilets on the Alps to Ocean will re-open, apart from Pumpkin Point and Lake Ohau weir toilet, at this stage. Boat ramps and jetties These will all be open again. Cemeteries: Up to 10 mourners who attend a funeral will be allowed on site for burials, with contact tracing and public health measures being met. Congregations to not exceed two hours. Ash interments are permitted, with public health measures in place and headstones and plaques may be installed – both of these have a maximum attendance of 10 people permitted. Cemeteries will be open for the public to visit, social distancing to be observed. Aquatic Centre As you know we are currently closed for our scheduled maintenance program which we brought forward to coincide with being able to work - with restrictions – under Level 3. Under level 2 this work will continue and contractors and our team are making good progress. At this stage we are expecting to be closed well into June. Please check on the Aquatic Centre Facebook page for updates on how we are progressing. Thank you to those that have participated in our telephone survey over the last couple of weeks – your honest feedback is appreciated and will enable us to make changes to and how we deliver our Programmes (Swim School, Squads & AquaExercise).
