SUMMARY

Project Name: Land South of Drury Lane, Hunsdon, Hertfordshire Location: Drury Lane, Hunsdon, Hertfordshire NGR: 541936 214102 Type: Evaluation Date: 25-27 September 2017 Planning Reference: 3/15/2217/OUT Location of Archive: To be deposited with Museum currently held at Cotswold Archaeology Site Code: DLH17

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in September 2017 at Land South of Drury Lane, Hunsdon, Hertfordshire. Eight trenches were excavated.

The trenches were distributed across the proposed development area in order to assess the archaeological potential across as wide a footprint as possible. Trench 2 contained a modern pit containing modern CBM and concrete, while Trench 3 contained a tree-throw, there were no other associated features within Trench 2 and 3. The remaining six trenches contained no archaeological features, finds or deposits of archaeological interest.

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 In September 2017 Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out an archaeological evaluation for CgMs Consulting on behalf of Chase Green Developments and J & L Build Ltd at Land South of Drury Lane, Hunsdon, Hertfordshire (centred at NGR: 541936 214102; Fig. 1). The evaluation was undertaken to as a condition of outline planning permission for the demolition of 30 Wicklands Road and the erection of 14 dwellings with all matters reserved except for means of access and layout granted by Council (EHC), the Local Planning Authority (ref: 3/15/2217/OUT),

1.2 The evaluation was carried out in accordance with a detailed Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) produced by CA (2017) and approved by Allison Tinniswood, the Archaeological Advisor to East Hertfordshire District Council (EHDC). The fieldwork also followed Standard and guidance: Archaeological field evaluation (CIfA 2014), and the Hertfordshire County Council.

The site

1.3 The proposed development area is approximately 1.1 hectares in extent and divided into north and south parcels of land, and comprises agricultural land bordered to the south, and north by housing, to the west by allotments and housing, and to the east by trees bordering on agricultural land. The site is generally level at c. 69m above Ordnance Datum (aOD).

1.4 The underlying bedrock geology of the area is mapped as London Clay, with superficial deposits of superficial deposits of Diamicton (Boulder Clay) overlying the London Clay

2. ARCHAEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND

2.1 The archaeological background given below is a succinct summary of the information garnered from a Desk Based Assessment undertaken by CgMs in 2014. (CgMs 2014)

3 © Cotswold Archaeology Land South of Drury Lane, Hunsdon, Hertfordshire: Archaeological Evaluation

Prehistoric 2.2 No finds of a Palaeolithic or Mesolithic date are known within a 1km radius of the site, so the potential for finds of this period were judged to be low.

2.3 Neolithic and Late Bronze Age ring ditches have been noted near to the site, though none have been investigated. One ring ditch is located 500m west of the site and is c. 40m in diameter, while two further ring ditches are 300m north of the site and 17m and 20m in diameter respectively. A trackway (?causeway) consisting of three parallel ditches may be associated with these ring ditches. All of these cropmarks are located within an Archaeological Alert Area located to the north-west of Hunsdon village, between 500m and 1km from the site.

2.4 Fieldwalking was undertaken 900m to the west of the site and retrieved artefacts dating to the Iron Age, Roman and medieval periods, with Romano-British artefacts dominating the finds (CgMs 2014). Further examples of ring ditches, observed as cropmarks on aerial photographs, are recorded 300 and 400m to the north of the site.

Medieval 2.5 Hunsdon is mentioned in Domesday; however it is noted as a manorial estate, not a village. The thirteenth century Deer Park, 900m to the south of the site, is thought to have been later incorporated into the sixteenth century Royal Hunting Park associated with Hunsdon Lodge located c. 500m to the north-east of the site.

Post Medieval

2.6 Mapping of the site up to 1938 shows the site as arable land. By 1946 a newly constructed RAF airfield was built to the east of the site, with its associated defences including a scheduled pillbox within the northern part of the site. By the 1970’s Hunsdon Lodge Farm lay within the northern part of the site and all World War 2 temporary structures had been removed.

3. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

4 © Cotswold Archaeology Land South of Drury Lane, Hunsdon, Hertfordshire: Archaeological Evaluation

3.1 The objectives of the evaluation are to provide information about the archaeological resource within the site, including its presence/absence, character, extent, date, integrity, state of preservation and quality, in accordance Standard and guidance: Archaeological field evaluation (CIfA 2014). This information will enable EHC to identify and assess the particular significance of any heritage asset, consider the impact of the proposed development upon it, and to avoid or minimise conflict between the heritage asset’s conservation and any aspect of the development proposal, in line with the National Planning Policy Framework (DCLG 2012).

4. METHODOLOGY

4.1 The fieldwork comprised the excavation of 8 trenches (7no. 30m x 1.6m trenches and 1no. 15m x 1.6m trench), in the locations shown on the attached plan (Figure 2). A number of the trenches had to be moved due to the presence of spoil heaps and close proximity to vegetation, and TR7 had to be split into two trenches. The revised layout was discussed with and approved by Alison Tinniswood, Historic Environment Advisor, Hertfordshire County Council and Peter Reeves, Associate Director CgMs. Trenches were set out on OS National Grid (NGR) co-ordinates using Leica GPS and surveyed in accordance with CA Technical Manual 4 Survey Manual.

4.2 All trenches were excavated by mechanical excavator equipped with a toothless grading bucket. All machine excavation was undertaken under constant archaeological supervision to the top of the first significant archaeological horizon or the natural substrate, whichever was encountered first. Where archaeological deposits were encountered they were excavated by hand in accordance with CA Technical Manual 1: Fieldwork Recording Manual.

4.3 Deposits were assessed for their palaeoenvironmental potential in accordance with CA Technical Manual 2: The Taking and Processing of Environmental and Other Samples from Archaeological Sites and, no deposits were identified that required sampling. All artefacts recovered were processed in accordance with Technical Manual 3 Treatment of Finds Immediately after Excavation.

4.4 The archive and artefacts from the evaluation are currently held by CA at their offices in Andover. Subject to the agreement of the legal landowner the archive will

be deposited with Hertford Museum. A summary of information from this project, set out within Appendix B, will be entered onto the OASIS online database of archaeological projects in Britain.

5. RESULTS (FIGURES 2-6)

5.1 This section provides an overview of the evaluation results; detailed summaries of the recorded contexts are to be found in Appendices A. A total of eight trenches were excavated. No archaeological features were observed within the trenches and no artefacts of archaeological significance were recovered. Trench 7 was split into two trenches, 7.1 and 7.2.

5.2 The topsoil across the entire site consisted of a dark greyish brown friable clayey silt with sparse sub-angular inclusions averaging between 0.10-0.36m in depth. The subsoil consisted of mid-grey/brown clay/silt with occasional sub-rounded flint and pebble inclusions averaging between 0.18-0.40m in depth. The natural geology varied across the site from mid-orange/brown compact silt/clay (Trenches 1 and 2) to light yellow clay in the majority of the trenches. Trenches 7.1 and 7.2 contained mid-red/brown compact silt/clay.

5.3 Modern disturbance in the form of a pit filled with modern rubble was identified within Trench 2, while Trench 3 contained a tree-throw. The remaining trenches contained no archaeological features or finds.

6. DISCUSSION

6.1 The results of the evaluation confirm the conclusions of the archaeological desk- based assessment that there is no archaeological potential on the site pre-dating the early 19th century. The evaluation recorded no archaeological features or deposits, neither did the evaluation record artefacts from any period predating the 19th century either as residual or in-situ artefacts.

7. CA PROJECT TEAM

Fieldwork was undertaken by Tony Brown, assisted by Pawel Jablonski and Hilde Van der Huel. The report was written by Ray Kennedy. The illustrations were prepared by Esther Escudero. The archive has been compiled by Zoe Emery, and prepared for deposition by Hazel O’Neill. The project was managed for CA by Ray Kennedy.

8. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Cotswold Archaeology would like to thank J & L Build Ltd for commissioning the work and providing the plant and welfare, and Alison Tinniswood, Historic Environment Advisor, Hertfordshire County Council, for her prompt assistance and advice in facilitating the smooth progression of the fieldwork.
