Årets VM, som spelas i Uljanovsk (annars mest känt som Lenins födelsestad), är det 36:e sedan starten i Helsingfors 1957. Sedan 2003 avgörs VM varje år och maratontabellen toppas av Sovjetunionen med 14 guld, före Sverige med 11 och Ryssland med 9. Finland tog sitt enda guld 2004 när man överraskande besegrade Sverige i en snöig finalmatch. Sverige har utöver gulden 17 silver och 7 brons. De enda länder utöver de redan nämnda som har medaljer från VM är Norge (1 silver, 1 brons) och Kazakstan (6 brons). Samtliga Sveriges matcher under VM, och finalen, kommer att direktsändas på Kanal 5 medan Eurosport 2 i Sverige direktsänder ett urval av de övriga matcherna. Trefaldige bandyvärldsmästaren Jonas Claesson kommenterar Sveriges matcher tillsammans med Niklas Jarelind. Sveriges första VM-guld kom under ledning av förbundskapten Håkan Sundin 1981 efter att Sovjetunionen vunnit de elva tidigare VM-turneringarna. Det elfte och senaste svenska guldet vanns i Kazakstans största stad Almaty 2012 där Ryssland finalslogs med 5-4.
