Thurs-Sat Longshaw Sheep Dog Trials 1st-3rd Longshaw National Trust Estate 7.30am – 5.30pm Hot and cold food is available, from a full breakfast or hot lunch to a snack and drink, a beer tent and ice cream van are also on site. Parking is free. The skill and intelligence of these dogs is amazing and shepherding an old country tradition that must be kept alive. Come and join us for a day on the moors and see some of the wisest dogs in the world. Entry £5

Sat & Rotherham Wildlife Trust: Volunteer work day on Blacka Moor 3rd Blacka Moor is on the A625 out of Sheffield a few hundred yards on the left before Fox House. 10am – 3pm Practical volunteer days at Blacka Moor are held on the first Saturday and third Thursday every month. Tasks vary from footpath improvements and access work, to habitat and vegetation management. Gloves, tools, and refreshments are provided, but wear suitable outdoor clothes and boots, and bring some lunch and drinking water if you're able to come for the whole day. Sat Friends of the Porter Valley: Bat Walk 3rd Forge Dam café, 7.30pm – 9.00pm This walk will be lead by Dr Nicky Rivers of Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust. Using detection devices the various bats in the valley will be observed and identified. Participants are advised to bring a torch.

Thurs Heritage Open Day: Waterwheel Restoration Work 8th Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. Meet in the Learning Centre. A FREE talk about the restoration of Abbeydale's waterwheels. See the Tilt Shop and Grinding Hull and hear about the work undertaken during our three year £1 million Heritage Lottery funded project. two talks available at 11am and 2pm. Fri British Cactus & Succulent Society: ‘Namibia’ 9th Scouts Headquarters, Trippet Lane 7.30pm Meetings are free to attend to all comers. Usually each meeting heralds the arrival of one of the societies many expert speakers and consists of a talk with a short recess midway for refreshments.

Fri Beauchief Environment Group: Moth Watch 9th We will be setting up a bright light source to attract the moths, a tried and tested method. This works best in the dark, so it won’t be an early evening start. (In mid-summer it means that people must stay up very late in order to record the species found!). We hope to have a bring-and-share supper and a get-together for a chat before it gets dark. In the event of inclement weather on that evening the moth watch will probably be put off. Fri-Sun Beauchief Abbey Open Days 9th-11th Visitors to the Abbey will be able to see the medieval tower and the 17th century box pews in the tranquil Chapel. Outside in the grounds the original footprint of the Chapter House and Cloisters can be traced. On Saturday from 11am to 4pm and Sunday from 12pm (after morning service) until 4pm, refreshments will be available and there will be guided tours and books and cards for sale. The Abbey will be open till 4pm on each day refreshments will be available on Saturday and Sunday only. All welcome.

Sat Friends of the Porter Valley: Autumn Fair 10th Forge Dam café 10.30am – 4.30pm

Sat Dore Show 10th Old School and Methodist Church Hall, Dore Village Visitor times: 2.30pm – 3.30pm Entertainment will be provided by Brass Band and Sheffield City Morris. As in previous years there are plenty of opportunities to enter exhibits and compete for prizes, with 74 categories available. Registration commences at 8:45am and finishes at 10:30 am. The exhibitions close at 4:30pm and the auction commences shortly afterwards at 4:40pm. Exhibits in the Methodist Church Hall may be removed between 5pm and 6pm. Exhibits in the Old School may not be removed before the auction is finished. This is usually at about 5:15 pm and must be removed by 6:30pm.

Sat/Sun Exploring Old Sheffield Walk 10th/11th Walk starts at the Cathedral at 1.45pm (2 hours walk) Local historian and author, Peter Machan, will lead a guided walk round some of the old industrial and help us to discover the parts of our city which made it great in the 19th century. Sat/Sun Heritage Open Days: Abbeydale 1944 10th/11th Abbeydale industrial Hamlet 11.00am – 4.00pm It is 1943 and the Ministry of Supply has a request to re-open the forge at Abbeydale Works to make an item that will be vital in the forthcoming invasion of Europe. Abbeydale is chosen as Sheffield can attract the skilled workers it needs but is small and compact enough to allow work to be carried out in secret. Normal admission applies. Sat/Sun Heritage Open Days: Life as a Grinder 10th/11th Shepherd Wheel Workshop, Whiteley Woods Learn about life as a grinder at Shepherd Wheel Workshop. See the restored waterwheel and machinery in action and hear stories about the people who worked here. Free admission.

Sun Sheffield & District Orchid Society: ‘Finding Cypripediums in S. W. China’ 11th Parish Church, Ranmoor Park Road 10.00am – 12.30pm Visitors welcome at no charge.

Sun The Sheffield Round Walk (14.5 miles) 11th Meet at Endcliffe Park café 9.30am The longest and most challenging walk in the walking festival, following a long established route through the leafy south-western suburbs, which includes wild valleys, lovely woodland and some of Sheffield’s favourite parks. We will walk in two groups. Everyone completing the walk will receive a certificate, a drink and a scone in Endcliffe Park cafe at the end. Cost £5, payable at the start.

Sun Heritage Open Day 11th General Cemetery, Cemetery Avenue 12noon – 4.00pm Enjoy an afternoon of guided walks featuring the Cemetery’s fascinating history and geology. There will be a chance to visit inside the newly restored Victorian Grade II* listed Nonconformist Chapel. A Nature and History Trail will be available to pickup so you can explore the Cemetery at your own pace.
