The Los Angeles Unified School District’s vision is that every student will receive a quality education in a safe, caring environment, and every high school graduate will be college prepared and career-ready.

The Office of School Design Options and NORTH VALLEY ZONE OF CHOICE—PORTFOLIO OF HIGH SCHOOL OPTIONS brochure outlines different Schools and Small Learning Communities (SLC) for incoming 9th grade students and their families to review. Please take the time to meet with students and teachers from these schools. We encourage you to study the educational programs offered by each small school, and together with your child, prioritize your preferences.

WHAT IS A ZONE OF CHOICE? Zones of Choice are geographic areas comprised of multiple high school options. All school options offer college preparatory curriculum, A-G standards-based instruction, and preparation for college and careers.

WHAT IS A PILOT SCHOOL? A pilot School is an autonomous small school with no more than 450 students from grades 9-12. Pilot Schools were established in 2007 as role models of educational innovation, and as research and development sites for effective teaching and learning in urban public schools. While Pilot Schools are part of the school district, they have autonomy over budget, staffing, governance, curriculum/assessment, and the school calendar. This increased flexibility enables the school to further meet the needs of students and parents.

WHAT IS A SMALL LEARNING COMMUNITY? A Small Learning Community (SLC) is a school with no more than 500 students from grades 9-12. SLC’s have a shared vision created by a group of educators, support staff, students, parents, and community who comprise the small school learning community and who assume responsibility for the learning of every student through a distinctive and focused standards-based curriculum.

¿QUE ES UNA ESCUELA PILOTO? Una escuela piloto es una escuela autónoma pequeña, con el máximo de 450 estudiantes en los grados 9-12. Las escuelas piloto se establecieron en el 2007 como modelos de innovación educativa, y como sitios de investigación y desarrollo para la eficacia de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje en escuelas públicas urbanas. CHECKLIST The checklist below will assist you and your child in deciding which schools are the best options for your child. □ Read each high school description □ Learn more about each option by: □ Attending information fairs □ Talking to students who currently attend the schools of interest □ Discussing choices with your child’s middle school teachers/counselors □ Touring some schools of choice □ Consider distance and transportation needs □ Prioritize all options by placing #1 next to the name of the school you really want your child to attend, #2 for your second option, and so forth to the final option

HIGH SCHOOL SELECTION PROCESS Based on the middle school your child is attending, he/she will make his/her high school selection in one of the settings listed below.

#1: If a student attends a major feeder middle school such as Frost, Maclay, Olive Vista, Pacoima, Porter, or San Fernando IAM:  he/she will fill out the online high school selection application during the first two weeks of February at his/her middle school. After completion, he/she will print the Parent Confirmation letter and will take home for parent review and signature.  parent will review the Parent Confirmation letter, make any necessary changes, sign and ensure the form is returned to the student’s middle school by February 28.

#2: If a student attends a non-feeder school (i.e., parochial, charter, private, magnet, other LAUSD school), the parent will download the ZOC High School Application (available February 1) from http://achieve.lausd.net/zoc, fill out, sign, and fax or email the application to the fax number/email indicated below by February 28.

Upon completion of the selection process, the student will receive a letter indicating the high school assignment. Parent and student must report to the assigned school prior to the start of school to complete the enrollment process. People will make positive changes when those in positions of authority do things with them rather than to them or for them. Social Justice Humanitas Academy’s Vision for our students and staff is to achieve self-actualization. Students and teachers use interdisciplinary lessons to explore issues through the lens of different classes—English, History, Math, Science, Language, Art, P.E., etc. Teachers work together in grade level teams to build the sense of family that helps us to know your student and his/her needs. SJHA teachers, counselors, administrators, TAs, office staff, and many community partners all work to support students as they move towards high school graduation. The numbers show that we do work for our students: 96% student attendance, 99% graduation rate, 98% of our Class of 2017 qualified for UC/CSU admission, and 98% of our students feel safe at our school. Our teachers had the highest attendance for two years—your students will be taught by their teachers! We believe in Restorative Justice—which we need to build and restore our students’ humanity rather than punish them. Technology Preparatory Academy (TPA) is a Linked Learning School where students will learn the computer skills that will take them into the future.

All students will achieve mastery of the Common Core National Standards in all content areas with an emphasis in preparing students for jobs in computer science and informational technology related careers as well as for post secondary education. TPA offers students courses taught by Mission College computer instructors as well as a hands on labs where they learn to code, fix and network computers and hand held devices, and print on 3-D digital printers.

Students will have the opportunity to not only obtain their high school diploma but also receive Microsoft and Cisco Certification in the field of business and technology. Humanitas Futures Academy

The Humanitas Futures Academy (HFA) helps students transition successfully to high school by offering targeted support to students and frequent communication with their families. Utilizing the Humanitas approach, an in-depth interdisciplinary exploration of the humanities, students complete projects and essays that assist them in discovering their own unique identity. HFA assists students in choosing from the three career pathways as they successfully promote to the tenth grade. All students in HFA receive personalized academic and social-emotional support from their teachers, counselors and HFA Coordinator.

Law and Police Pathways Law and Police Pathways (LAPP)

The Law and Police cohorts will prepare students to be thoughtful advocates, involved and informed citizens, and stewards of democracy.

The Law Pathway will engage students who are interested in pursuing careers in politics, law, governance, and community organizing. Students within this cohort will take college classes through Mission College (dual enrollment), preparing them for a career in law or as a paralegal. A total of 18 college units will be earned by students who complete all three years of the Law Pathway.

The Youth Police Academy is a new pathway supported by the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASP). Students will be part of a cohort that instructs them on how to become a police officer. Student will be in cohorts from grades 9-12. Youth Police Academy (YPA) students will wear uniforms on a specific day and will be taught by LASP officers on police procedures and how to become police officers.

Zone of Choice Page 10 Engineering Design Career Pathway The Engineering Design Career Pathway (EDCP) at San Fernando Senior High School supports students in the exploration of engineering and architecture, 3D prototyping and computer assisted design (CAD), and encourages our students to pursue STEM opportunities at the post-secondary collegiate level as well as in the 21st century work place.

Engineering Design students have several options in which to engage in these career paths through our Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering Pathway courses. Students enrolled in the PLTW pathway take the following project based courses:

 Selected 9th Graders and 10th - Introduction to Engineering & Design

 10th or 11th Grade - Principles of Engineering

 11th or 12th Grade - Engineering Design & Development.

Engineering Design students may also apply for the college prep PUENTE Program designed to cohort students together during their 4-years of high school. Students will certify in CPR and First Aid, and will be thoroughly versed in medical technology. Students will become advocates for a healthy community while participating in their own education. They will have the opportunity to connect classroom learning with real world experiences through internships and job shadowing. They will be ready for hundreds of high paying jobs in the health care field. Academy of College and Career Readiness at Sylmar Charter High School (ACCR)

The Academy of College and Career Readiness (ACCR) will serve as a bridge from middle to high school in an effort to create successful high school, college, and career experiences. ACCR builds foundational skills to ensure that students have the tools, desire, and confidence to succeed. All students will participate in a vocational aptitude survey to assist in choosing either Business Technology and Design or Leadership Arts and Media Academies as their Small Learning Communities upon entering 10th grade. The ACCR teachers work in a collaborative environment and are committed to the students they share. The students, parents and counselor will meet to design an Individual Graduation Plan that includes A-G, California Department of Education and LAUSD requirements needed to graduate from High School. To promote college awareness, ACCR students will receive college preparatory workshops, and by the end of their senior year, the students should be college prepared and career ready.

The Business, Technology and Design Academy (BTD) prepares students for college and careers that require 21st century skills. Teachers focus on the use of technology as part of Project Based Learning. Students develop skills in problem solving, analytical reading, mathematics, and writing as they work collaboratively with their peers. Graduates from BTD will be prepared to make positive career and college choices. Our technology teachers are skilled in areas from computer literacy to programming. Our curriculum and internships provide a level of work and life relevancy that engenders relationships beyond high school. What sets our Academy apart is our creativity-based core curriculum. We are focused on helping our students succeed and explore careers in the biotechnology and health industries through Project Lead the Way's Biomedical Sciences and Engineering by Design. Our school is currently serving about 350 students and will expand to about 450 students from grades 9-12 in the next few years. We strongly believe in providing our students with the tools they need to achieve their college and career goals. We have high expectations for all of our students and stress the importance of a post secondary education. Our school offers: field trips/college trips, exposure to STEM fields, A-G requirements, tutoring, after school programs, shared sports with Sylmar HS, partnerships with local colleges and organizations, Linked Learning/CTE pathways, volunteer/internship opportunities, Project Lead the Way, Engineering by Design, College Summit, and SOS Mentors. We are also a Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood and Youth Career Connect grant recipient. Nosotros somos una escuela del Distrito Unificado de Los Ángeles (LAUSD) asociada con el Instituto de Póliza de Jóvenes (YPI). Nuestra escuela abrió durante el año escolar 2012-2013 y está basada en un modelo aprendizaje vinculado. Estamos enfocados en ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a que tengan éxito y exploren carreras en las ramas de biotecnología e industrias de salud. Nosotros creemos en proveer a nuestros estudiantes con las herramientas necesarias para que ellos logren sus metas en sus carreras universitarias y técnicas. Nosotros tenemos una alta expectativa de todos nuestros estudiantes y estresamos la importancia de una educación post secundaria.
