IT TECHNICIAN I/II

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs a variety of specialized duties in installing, managing and supporting the County’s network infrastructure, including servers, networking equipment and personal throughout the County; performs related work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

IT Technician I is the entry level class of this technical series. The incumbent performs the more routine system support duties including staging, configuring, repairing and installing personal computers, training and assistance to users of personal hardware and software while learning the more skilled and complex work. This class is alternately staffed with IT Technician II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency, which meet the qualifications for the higher level class.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative Only)

• Installs, configures, maintains and supports personal computer system, applications software, associated components and devices including network printers, equipment scanners and related equipment. • Trains user staff on personal computer usage; arranges for training on a variety of systems; provides technical assistance to software or hardware problems; troubleshoots operating problems with printers and other peripheral equipment. • Participates in the planning and design of the County’s network infrastructure; develops strategies, makes security and parameter recommendations. • Provides technical assistance for network and computer system users including network applications, software, network connections and peripheral equipment. • Develops and implements security practices and policies; performs periodic testing of the policies and revises as appropriate; instructs users in local area network administration and security; maintains security system records for networks; maintains , making changes as needed to ensure security for the network.

• Troubleshoots network infrastructure and software problems; coordinates with vendors; takes appropriate action to resolve problems and assists users in methods to avoid future problems. • Installs, configures and maintains the County servers including security, reconfiguring, installing applications and patches as needed. • Develops training materials, including tutorials, documentation and instructional manual for system use. • Develops documentation for network documents, configurations, cabling and other work performed; maintains a variety of records and prepares periodic reports of work performed. • Analyzes, designs, implements and upgrades e-mail systems; provides technical assistance to users; troubleshoots systems as needed. • Troubleshoots operating problems with personal and software for user staff; provides technical assistance by or at the user’s desk as appropriate for the situation. • Participates in planning and implementation of conversion projects. • Creates simple programs for department users; identifies needs, writes basic programs; instructs users and documents procedures. • Repairs personal computers and prepares for recycling to other departments. • Maintains a variety of data; prepares reports using data collected and makes recommendations for further action as appropriate. • Performs duties in support of special projects. • Works on call on a rotational basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Operating principles and practices of personal computers, printers, operating systems and Operating principles and characteristics of servers, networks and personal computer hardware such as utilized by the County. Operating principles and practices of wide area networks, network devices and communication types.

Standard computer operating software for word processing, database, spreadsheet, e-mail and other software for personal and network computer systems. Standard personal computer software techniques for developing systems and for instructing others in their use. Procedures necessary to maintain the integrity and security of data in networked systems. Principles, practices and techniques used in troubleshooting computer systems and networks and resolving problems. Methods of instructing others in the use of personal computer and server applications. Office administrative practice and methods, including recordkeeping and the operation of standard office equipment.

Skill in:

Installing, maintaining, operating and troubleshooting personal computer hardware, peripherals and operating software. Planning, organizing, coordinating and implementing network infrastructure and upgrades. Planning, organizing and coordinating personal computer and wide area network services for user departments. Developing and implementing new programs and usage of computerized systems. Analyzing complex user problems, evaluating alternatives and reaching sound conclusions. Preparing effective user instructions, documentation and other written materials. Training user staff in the operation of new or revised computer applications, including explaining system concepts to non-technical users. Maintaining accurate records of work performed. Exercising sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Other Requirements: Must be able to lift hardware up to 50 pounds. Must be able to pass a background investigation.

Desirable Education and Experience:

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is:

IT Technician I: Equivalent to completion of two years of college or possession of an Associate of Arts degree in or closely related field and one year of experience using networking hardware.

IT Technician II: In addition to the above, two years of experience operating and installing personal computers and/or providing training on personal computer software at a level equivalent to the County's class of IT Technician I.
