L’appuntamento raccoglie i migliori giocatori del panorama internazionale della disciplina, che si affronteranno con la formula dell’eliminazione diretta fino alla finale, in programma sabato 2 marzo. Nella prima giornata di gare è andato in scena il primo turno. Nessun italiano partecipa alla rassegna iridata. La sorpresa principale è arrivata in campo maschile, dove l’egiziano Karim Abdel Gawad, testa di serie n.5 e campione del mondo nel 2016 è stato sconfitto in rimonta con il punteggio di 3-2 dal connazionale Youssef Soliman. Inaspettata anche l’eliminazione del peruviano Diego Elias (n.10 del ranking mondiale) ad opera dell’inglese Adrian Waller per 3-1. Nessun problema invece per il campione in carica, l’egiziano Mohamed El Shorbagy, che ha cominciato al meglio il suo tentativo di difendere il titolo regolando l’inglese Joshua Masters. Turno agevole anche per il n.1 del ranking mondiale, l’egiziano Ali Farag, vincente sull’inglese Daryl Selby. Avanti senza difficoltà anche il tedesco Simon Rösner, l’egiziano Tarek Momen, il colombiano Miguel Rodriguez, il neozelandese Paul Coll e l’egiziano Marwan El Shorbagy. Diverso il discorso in campo femminile, dove le prime dieci giocatrici del tabellone hanno tutte superato il turno. L’egiziana Raneem El Welily, campionessa in carica, ha sconfitto con un netto 3-0 la sudafricana Alexandra Fuller. Risultato analogo per la n.2 del ranking, l’egiziana Nour El Sherbini, contro l’inglese Lily Taylor. La sconfitta più sorprendente è stata quella dell’egiziana Mariam Metwally (testa di serie n.22) contro l’australiana Christine Nunn, seguita dall’eliminazione dell’australiana Rachael Grinham (n.27) contro la scozzese Lisa Aitken. The WSF Conference, which preceded the AGM, facilitated informal discussions and featured presentations to update the delegates on key initiatives - including the World Squash Officiating, a joint enterprise between the WSF and Professional Squash Association (PSA) to develop an online platform that will provide National Federations with the tools to develop refereeing in their country. The new initiative is scheduled to go live before the end of the year. Additionally James Sandwith, from BEBRAND, presented the findings of a strategic review commissioned by WSF, with the report now available for all member nations to appraise. The 49th Annual General Meeting, attended by representatives of 24 National Federations, saw delegates agree an amendment to the Articles of Association to reduce the risk of inappropriate leadership behavior and to ensure that delegates in attendance at an AGM have a formal connection with their National Federations. There were no changes to the standard Rules of Squash. However, the Rules of Squash 57 were updated, adding an extra ball rebound resilience at 33 degrees C that will help to ensure that the differential between blue and black balls - and their range of bounce - will be more uniform across the brands that are WSF-approved. The WSF Championship Regulations were updated with respect to player eligibility, the use of random draws and a new timeline and procedure for seeding juniors.

Last December we presented our case to the IOC’s Programme Commission and this day in May we shall do so to the IOC Executive Board in St Petersburg, Russia, along with the other shortlisted sports for the place on the programme of the 2020 Olympic Games. The presentation group will be led by WSF President Ramachandran and features our two world champions Nicol David and Ramy Ashour, whose passion and charisma are sure to impress the IOC President Jacques Rogge and his fourteen IOC Board colleagues. The bid film will be shown – it features the two players and has already been viewed nearly 110,000 times, along with the video giving a snapshot of the 185 countries that play squash (you can see both at http://www.worldsquash.org/ws/?p=10564) – along with a new film, that is being finished featuring innovation, broadcast and presentation. The spoken presentations will be accompanied by over 70 great slides illustrating the points made. What happens next is not confirmed. Originally it was stated that one sport would be recommended for ratification by the full IOC membership but indications now are that a few sports may be put forward for the final vote. That will be made clear on the evening of 29th May and we must hope that we are there for the final decision in Buenos Aires on 8th September.
