Over the last 2 years we have averaged attendance of 2,500 swims per season. Maintenance over the last 10 years has increased to a point where we need to look at options to maintain the long-term viability of this community asset. The committee has been planning this upgrade for the past 5 years, carefully managing funds to be able to propose such a project.

This upgrade will:  Optimise the lifespan of our current facility to protect the community asset our forebearers have established.  Provide a safe storage area for chemicals to comply with NZ Health and Safety requirements.  Address Health and Safety requirements to align the water quality for swimmers with the NZ Pools standardsafety code.  Minimise ongoing maintenance costs The Owaka Lions club has been an integral part of the swimming pool throughout its history supporting the building of the initial structure and assisting with repairs and maintenance throughout the years. The Owaka Lions Club have again extended full support for this new project allocating funds from the recent sale of the Owaka Sale Yards. The generous donation of $35,000 has given the pool committee the confidence this dream could become a reality. Our proposed upgrade is planned to be carried out in two stages dependent on Council support and successful fund applications. While the committee has managed to save significant reserves, we see it imperative to maintain a per- centage of funds for unforeseen ongoing maintenance. Stage 1  New roof and pool surround structure to safely enclose the facility maintaining existing glass.  Construction of chemical storage area within the existing footprint to safely house chemicals.  Installation of electronic key system to be able to manage safe member entry. Stage 2  Water services upgrade to future proof water reticulation increasing ability to filter water and install electronic chlorine dosing pump.  Resurface the pool interior with PVC membrane to improve the operation and extend the life of the current con- crete pool. As part of the pool interior upgrade aluminium safety rails will be installed around the perimeter of the pool and a hydraulic ease of access ladder. The Owaka and community is fortunate to have a new group of young adults who see it imperative to teach water skills to their children living so close to the NZ seacoast. The committee has hosted JC Swim school for the last three seasons twice yearly to complete intensive block swimming courses in Owaka. The Catlins Area School uses the pool daily in Terms 1 and 4 for all classes to enjoy the benefit of water safety and swim skills. Tahakopa school completes a block course of lessons annually. Catlins, Tahakopa and schools have initiated an annual swimming carnival led by The Catlins Area School who are fortunate to have a teacher who is passionate about swimming. Our facility is a place for people to get together and encourage socialisation and community involvement. Families often gather which is a healthy way to promote relationships, total wellbeing, and connections within our small rural community. Generations before us have put effort and hard work into what this has become. As a committee it is our turn to stay true to what has been created and now preserve and develop this asset to stay in our community for many more years to come.
