Part VII – Research Activities Keywords Brief Description

5 Evolution, phylogeny, Since 2001 I have focused much of my attention on Diptera systematics, systematics phylogeny and evolution, with families of the , especially the Tachinidae and Rhinophoridae, as my target taxa. The Tachinidae are an extremely diverse yet understudied family of beneficial that parasitize other , notably plant-eating insects, while the Rhinophoridae are of great biological interest as the only known flies that are parasitoids of Crustacea. My ongoing studies are aimed at elucidating the phylogenetic relationships of this superfamily using morphological (both on living and fossil taxa) and molecular approaches, with international collaborators. A robust reconstruction of the phylogenetic history of this lineage is the first step to developing a more stable and predictive classification that can be applied on a world scale to these economically important flies. A unified classification of the Tachinidae, in particular, will facilitate the use of this family in biological control programs against invasive pests. Recently I extended my research interest to the phylogeny and evolution of Neuroptera (lacewings) and relatives. Lacewings are a relatively minor insect group, not reaching by several orders of magnitude the diversity of other holometabolans such as the related Coleoptera. Nonetheless they are characterized by unusually morphologies and life styles, besides being a relatively ancient lineage.

Parasitoid community The effects on biodiversity of the conversion of natural ecosystems into structure, stratification, agricultural farming and human settlements are of significant concern in diversity, conservation, Europe. I have been developing new research lines for studying the effects of habitat fragmentation climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation on the higher trophic levels represented by predators and parasitoids, using different families of flies (Tachinidae, Rhinophoridae, , Syrphidae) and wasps (Sphecidae, Ichneumonidae).

Insect diversity I am involved in several collaborative projects like Fauna Europaea (since inventories, catalogues, 2004), the World Catalogue of Tachinidae, the World Catalogue of checklists Rhinophoridae, the Fauna Palaestina, Our Planet Reviewed Project and the Manual of Afrotropical Diptera. I have built a large geo-referenced database of the Tachinidae, Rhinophoridae, Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae of the Mediterranean basin, which includes more than 45,000 locality records for about 900 species. This database provides a solid basis for future studies on distributional changes of these important groups of Diptera due to climate change and habitat disruption. I am currently leading a proposal for a LIFE Biodiversity project involving professional and citizen scientists and several institutions to better document biodiversity through extensive insect sampling across latitudinal and urbanization gradients in Italy. This study will provide baseline data that policy makers can use when developing strategies to conserve biodiversity in Italy during a time of global climatic change.

Museology, zoological Zoological collections are the foundation of systematics and an integral part of collections, type both pure and applied biology. Raising awareness of the importance of such material, curatorial collections at every education level is a contemporary challenge to valorize the activities role of natural history museums. Within this context I am actively participating in several initiatives to digitize museum specimens, giving special emphasis to primary types. I have given seminars in national and international institutions

6 about the role and importance of natural history collections, noting for example the relevance of collections to such present day concerns as climatic change and spread of invasive alien species.
