Wł. Dawida 1, 50-527 Wrocław, Poland e-mail address: [email protected] Abstract Resentment has a particular place in the University of the Third Age. Here, the acti- vities of the organization come up against the developing personalities of the elderly and crises of personality, which intensify the phenomenon. Temporary resentment can in unfavourable circumstances temporary resentment can escalate into permanent resent- ment, which is more diffi cult to alleviate. The task of the manager is to uncover this phe- nomenon at a relatively early stage, and to take appropriate preventative measures in the form of long-lasting negotiation of tasks and suitable system of sharing rewards. Key words: resentment, U3A, negative ageing, management of emotions, NGO, psychological contract The University of the Third Age is a distinctive organization, the management of which poses an enormous challenge for the director. Here, apart from the usual problems which arise in any organization, additional problems need to be dealt with related to the specifi cs of ageing. Among the issues connected to ageing which make the task of management diffi cult, the greatest challenge is posed by emotional dys- regulation, related to specifi c emotional reactions. Among these are typical mood swings - ‘the yo-yo effect’- and the experiencing of resentment. Very often the one is connected with the other, and both are characteristic of adverse ageing and are rela- ted to the psychological costs which people must bear as they get older. The second important aspect of the management of the University of the Third Age is the fact that generally we are dealing with non-governmental organizations. These operate on a non-profi t basis, supported by vouluntary work by the elderly, who are also characteristic. Here we are very often dealing with involvement in voluntary work based on emotional benefi ts. Obviously, the involvement of many elderly people arises primarily from acquired virtues, among which social work is ranked fairly highly, although this is not always the case. Thanks to such activities, a large percentage of the volunteers rediscover their place in society through a network of social and emotional relationships. Many of them are quite simply looking for 6 Preface appreciation. However, insofar as younger people do something out of a sense of help and suppot, for elderly people emotional benefi ts are just as important as altru- isic motives among the young. This emotional dimension often becomes much more important, especially when emotional needs are unsatisfi ed for reason of loneliness, loss, or trauma following the death of a loved one. The literature of psychology and pedagogy shows that while on the one hand such an increase in emotional needs can

I have to be honest and say that through years’ worth of reading Tuwim’s works I have at- tempted to repress this phrase. Well, it was impossible, the most loved childhood poet, passionately recited in elementary school and later secondary school, the genius who wrote Ball at the Opera, the work that I wrote my master’s thesis on – that he was to remain in the collective consciousness asparticipant a of UB (secret political police) balls. Indeed, Irena Krzywicka had rittenw about this, but her gossipy Confessions of a debaucherer with tons of unconfirmed information were not exactly convincing. Speaking about Miłosz, the great literary scholar, Edward Balcerzan, once said to me uneasily, “One can say about another that he works for the UB only when they meet at the department’s cash desk”. However, more recent books on Tuwim, like the excellent biography by Mariusz Urbanek2, tell us to go back to the difficult thought and ask not whether ornot the poet went to the balls organized by the UB, but why he would go to them.

Newelska 6, 01-447 Warszawa, Poland [email protected] tel. +48 223810393 Abstract Analysis and interpretation of poetry is based on qualitative features of its text such as its semantics or means of expression as well as on general knowledge about the author and artistic period. Recent advances in automatic text processing allow for performing quantitative analysis of large sets of poetry. Their results may facilitate assessment of linguistic capabilities of its author or in other words his poetic mastery. This contribution presents a method of calculating the share of grammatical rhymes in Polish poetry. It is used to create a ranking of both historic and contemporary Polish poets. Comparative study and statistical analysis is developed using Pan Tadeusz by Adam Mickiewicz as a reference poem for Polish poetry. Assessment of technical mastery is one step towards the introduction of objective measures of poetic quality. Keywords rhyme detection, Computer-Aided Poetry, Pan Tadeusz 1 Introduction Perception of poetry largely depends on prosodic features of its language such as intonation, meter or rhyme. Linguistic, qualitative analyses of poetry have been conducted for thousands of years now. However, quantitative evaluation of verse structure became much more effective after the introduction of automatic text processing tools. Prosodic features of poetry are easier to analyse automatically than its semantics, whose subtlety and ambiguity sometimes make its interpretation challenging even for specialists. Their statistical study coupled with analysis of the verse syntax constitutes an important part of an interdisciplinary trend of applying modern Computer Science techniques in poetry generation, analysis, evaluation, translation and paraphrasing.

(ON THE AUTHOR OF NIEPOKÓJ AS A TRANSLATOR OF SERBIAN AND CROATIAN POETRY) Abstract Tadeusz Różewicz’s work as a translator is limited to a mere half-dozen or dozen-odd more or less successful efforts. He translated individual poems by the Czech poet Jan Pilař, the Serbian poets Vasko Popa and Miodrag Pavlović, the Hungarian writer Sándor Petőfi, and Dragutin Tadijanović. Translated poems of once-called Yugoslavian authors were invested in the poetry of culture, poems focused on “the bright side”, though not devoid of references to the darker side of existence, poems that are trusting in the sense that they turn toward the future with hope, poems “reconciled” “to the wound.” Tadijanović’s Prsten offered him an opportunity to express some convictions which, despite the magnitude of his own doubts, he considered worth upholding or at least giving some consideration. His translation of Prsten can and should be read as a purposefully borrowed quotation. It is worth asking, however, as a kind of synecdoche for a much larger problem, in which a micrological study can provide a useful characterization of one of the greatest Polish poets of the twentieth century in his role as translator of poetry in a foreign tongue, here Serbian and Croatian poetry in particular.

Her academic interests focus on the study of literary text using instruments and tools developed by cognitive linguistics. In her scholarship, she blends scientific inquiry with the extensive experience accrued over years of teaching Polish at a secondary school. e-mail: [email protected] Lucyna Bagińska The linguistic image of the soul in Polish early modernist ekphrases inspired by Arnold Böcklin’s paintings his study aims to present the results of a reconstruction of the image of the ‘soul’ – with a particular emphasis on the axiological aspect of the term – found in the fol- Tlowing ekphrases: Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer’s “Isle of the Dead (An Illustration for Böcklin’s Die Toteninsel)” (“Wyspa umarłych (Ilustracja do „Die Toteninsel” Böcklina”)), Maria Poraska’s “The Sacred Grove” (“Gaj święty”) and “Odysseus and Calypso” (“Odyseusz i Kalipso”), Lucjan Rydel’s “The Harbour” (“Przystań”), and Leopold Staff’s “The Sacred Grove” (“Gaj święty”).1 Alongside the “axiosphere of the soul” (evaluation of the phenomenon), I also seek to examine “soul in the axiosphere”, or, in other words, evaluate the space to which it is ascribed by drawing on two ekphrases penned by two authors (Przerwa-Tetmajer and Rydel) inspired by the same painting (The Isle of the Dead). The decision to pare the body of texts selected for interpretation was motivated by both the limited space of this essay and the type of scholarly task that they were supposed to inform, namely spatial analysis.

He con- siders how the academic activity was combined with “service for the state,” increasingly imposed by the reality of the time. The choice of university Germanists and Anglicists from Cracow results from the obvious interconnections between the two groups of scholars and from the fact that by using their example it is easy to see how their specifi c mission was understood, interpreted and how it translated into everyday business relations. It turns out that academic success did not always guarantee a high position or even remaining in the job. Often, they were determined by various completely diff erent factors. The author of the article discusses it through the prism of legal and political content identifiable in the text without omitting references to the state and its system in Tuwim’s earlier works, and indicates the way in which the short-term student of law school perce- ived and experienced law. The superb boyish laws are the fragment of Kwiaty Polskie which the author analysed in terms of the legislative technique.
