Giving Patients Better Access to the Best Orthopedic Care

ntil a few years ago, when patients wanted the high-level care offered by the Rubin Institute for U Advanced Orthopedics, they could go to only one place: Sinai Hospital. Since the early 2000s, the Rubin Institute has earned international acclaim for its care for bones and joints. The institute’s International Center for Limb Lengthening is one of the only centers in the world with physicians who can correct bone-length discrepancies and deformities. And the Rubin Institute’s joint surgeons handle some of the biggest volumes of joint repair and replacement surgeries in Maryland. They also perform the largest number of joint revisions — a complicated surgery — in the state. “We wanted to be more accessible to patients,” says Mark Bittle, Dr.P.H., M.B.A., director of the Rubin Institute. At one Orthopedic surgeon Paul Apostolo, M.D., specializes in conditions of time, new patients had to wait about a month to see a Rubin the fingers, hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Institute doctor. Orthopedic experts, led by Paul M. Apostolo, M.D., Northwest Hospital’s new chief of orthopedic surgery, provide comprehensive surgical and non-surgical treatment of knee, hip, shoulder, hand, foot, ankle and spine disorders. The newest of these programs is the Center for Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery, headed by Dr. Apostolo in collaboration with plastic and hand surgeon Brian Janz, M.D. They treat patients with conditions of the fingers, hand, wrist and elbow. The center draws upon the strengths of many kinds of experts, including a staff of physical and occupational therapists with dedicated onsite imaging facilities. “The staff and facilities at Northwest Hospital are particularly remarkable for providing one of the finest outpatient hand and upper extremity experiences. The most advanced minimally invasive procedures are performed at the state-of-the-art SurgiCenter,” says Dr. Apostolo, who also specializes in knee, hip and shoulder reconstruction, sports medicine and orthopedic trauma. Additionally, about a year ago, the Rubin Institute founded the Center for Diabetic Limb Preservation at Northwest Hospital.
