Sometimes it is not the most that deserve the credit. That is exactly why Adam has received the award because although he did not take the most wickets, his throughout the season has been very important to how well the Griffins have done. He has bowled important spells, creating pressuren i some spells going for no runs while wickets fell on the other end on numerous occasions, hence him having accumulated 30 maidens in his 118 overs against some very good opposition. He knew his role in the team and executed it very well, also backing up a good bowling performance in the zone final against Canterbury Country with a very good 70. There has been more than one occasion where he bowled throughout a session when the captain asked him to step up.

Greg’s Stats speak for themselves. He was an absolute stalwart at number 3 for the Griffins this past season. He was always unselfish, always putting it on the line for the team. It was as though it brought about a certain calmness and confidence within the team with Greg at number 3. His 111 against Buller wheree w were 6/3 showed how strong he was mentally and how much pride he n takes i his performances both at franchise level, for the Griffins and at club level. His second hundred he led from the front against Canterbury Country in the zone final, that helped the team win that game.

Nelson Cricket Association Griffins Player of the Year Greg Hay

This player epitomizes professionalism. It was not only his performances with the bat that go him this award, but the manner in how he led the team. There wasn a occasion where the team had training on a public holiday and Greg was injured and could not throw, he still arrived and was part of training and helped wheree h could. His willingness to help younger players and advise them was always welcomed. His commitment to the Griffins in the first game of the season against Marlborough says a lot about why he has achieved what he has thus n far i this game. He played a Plunket Shield match that finished the Friday, gotn o the plane Saturday morning early, to play in a Hawke Cup game for two days and performed for the team in Blenheim. His performances, contributions as a leader, on and off the field and attitude at training sessions were invaluable for the Griffins this past season and that is why Greg Hay is player of the year.

All the best, Aldin Smith
