4 ABSTRACT Following the return of research tendencies searching for acustical improvements on the clarinet, begun in the 50´s, this study strives to focus its scientific investigation on the influence and importance of the barrel in structuring the tone quality of the clarinet. Four different models of barrels were used in this study, three of them produced by the author, in which seven different parameters related to tone quality, formed the basis for classification. Through auditory testing using MEDS software and later the methodological tool MDS (Multidimension Scaling), two-dimensional graphs were generated, spatially representing the similarities/differences of tonal parameters between the barrels. Upon careful analysis of these results, it was concluded that the experimental models built by the author singularly distinguish themselves from the commercial model in a great majority of parameters, thus confirming the performance tests performed prior to those done in connection with this study. 5 LISTA DE ILUSTRAÇÕES FIGURA 1 - • An Analysis of Géza Frid's Concerto for Clarinets, Op. 82 (1972
1 An Analysis of Géza Frid’s Concerto for Clarinets, Op. 82 (1972): Rediscovered repertoire by a Hungarian, Jewish, Dutch composer Géza Frid (1904-1989) was a significant Hungarian-born Dutch composer and pianist of Jewish descent. His compositional style was highly regarded in the Dutch musical scene of the 20th century; his music has been programmed on multiple occasions by the Concertgebouw Orchestra and in 1949 and 1954 won the City of Amsterdam Music Award. Major influences on Frid’s musical development started in his native Hungary where he studied with Béla Bartók and Zoltan Kodaly before his move to the Netherlands. In 1972, he composed a significant concerto for B-flat, A, E-flat and bass clarinets (Op. 82) and dedicated it to George Pieterson, principle clarinet with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Scholarly discussions of Géza Frid’s clarinet music are not to be found in either the US based International Clarinet Society’s The Clarinet, or in the Dutch based De Klarinet. Intensive World Cat library searches have yielded no recordings of this piece, and currently there is not even one recording of Frid’s Concerto for Clarinets on YouTube or in the Naxos Music Library. The Concerto for Clarinets is an effective and interesting piece providing a significant addition to the standard clarinet repertoire; the goal of this research is to introduce and promote this hitherto unknown work to the worldwide clarinet community. Save for some short selections on the Géza Frid website set up by his dedicated son, Arthur Frid, and a Wikipedia article, no translations exist of Géza Frid’s autobiographical material1.

Instead of a large-scale-sonata, however, this time he com- Iposed ‘only’ a short, virtuosic violin solo piece to which he first gave the title Tumultos, submitting it – without success – for the Sibelius Violin Competition that same year. Ten years later, when he composed a solo piano piece for the Maj Lind Competition in 1985, he gave it the title Solo II and rechristened Tumultos as Solo I. By doing so, he laid the basis for his Solo series – which later, as is the case with his solo concertos, would include a work for every instrument of the orchestra.

  • The Clarinet (Even with No Extension Keys) They Are Closer to the Soprano Voice Range
STEVE TADD WOODWIND REPAIRS (.co.uk) 07734 543011 Clarinet Miscellany (Jun 2017) Clarinet systems There are three key-work mechanisms still in use. The Boehm/Klose system – this is most common system, used in UK, France, USA and most of the world. It was designed by H Klose and Auguste Buffet; they abandoned the old (Muller) system and based the new design on principles established by Boehm. The Oehler (or Öhler) system – this is common in Germany and Austria. Oskar Öhler developed the old Muller system adding tone holes to correct intonation and acoustic deficiencies. The system has more keys than the Boehm system. Major developments include the patent C ♯, low E-F correction, fork-F/Bb correction. The Albert system (Simple system) – this was a simpler development of the Muller system created by Eugene Albert - a pupil of Adolphe Sax (who contributed some of the design). It was popular in early Jazz, and may still be found in Klezmer music, Turkish music, and Eastern European Folk music. Most instruments are high pitch but later ones were produced at A440. They were considered better than the early Boehm/Klose instruments. The Boehm/Klose system The vast majority of Boehm/Klose system clarinets have a standard mechansim that does not have all the keys originally intended for the system. The ‘full’ Boehm system clarinet requires some additional mechanism (as listed below). A few professional instruments have some or all of the additional mechanism. • Alternate G# /d# key for the left hand fourth finger, allowing more efficient fingering of certain passages. This key is a common addition on professional Clarinets.
