By Ron Bush, Sports Editor I realize football season is not even half over yet, but I don't think it is too early to say something about UTC's basketball team this year. After all, last year the basketeers were 19-9 and went to the NCAA College Division play-offs in Ron Shumate's first season as head coach. And this season promises to be even better, with Coach Shumate declaring that his team is shooting for the national championship. Shumate and his assistant coaches, .Ralph Underhill and Tom Losh, have been busy all summer, ^cruder Underhill deserves most of the credit for the outstanding group of freshmen UTC has signed to scholarships in what Shumate calls "the best recruiting year in the history of the University." The seven signees include six prospects from Louisville, where Underhill coached high school basketball before coming to UTC last year. All-American Wayne Golden and Kentucky All-Stater Gary Stich head this group, but Herbert McCray, Paul Mershon, William Gordon, Cornell Starks, and Sterling Tan-ana' were all outstanding high school players. Of course, outstanding high school players do not always develop into good college players, but these freshmen do have talent. Two other newcomers are expected to be of tremendous value to the 1973-74 Moc basketball team. Mocs Eddie Yates (87) and Mike Bishop (31) combine to stop an Auburn runner.
