Seated, Mark Gee, Phoenix, Lucia Gee. Standing, Andy Gee, Jenn Armstrong

“What do you say to a group of people who saved your son’s life? Mark told us, “without question, the Gates Vascular Institute is where you need to go for life-saving stroke treatment. There is no doubt in my mind that Andy is alive today because we got him to Gates. It is absolutely the best place for stroke care.”

10 The Foundations of Kaleida Health The Best Place for Stroke Care

It was a phone call no parent ever expects to receive. Mark’s 30 year old son Andy had been found unconscious and was being transported by ambulance to an area hospital. Andy was evaluated and then transferred to another hospital, both non-Kaleida Health facilities, where he was diagnosed with venous sinus thrombosis-a type of stroke in which a clot blocks blood leaving the brain; a critical and life-threatening event. At the time, physicians felt surgery was too risky and instead, put Andy on a blood thinning drug in hopes of dissolving the clot. After 11 hours though, the family asked for him to be transferred to Gates Vascular Institute. That decision proved to be a life-saver. Within two hours, Andy was in the operating room. Seventy-five percent of the clot was removed while clot busting drugs dissolved the remaining 25 percent. The surgery was a resounding success and Andy’s road to recovery had begun. “Andy was deeply comatose when he arrived, with nearly no brain reflexes,” said neurosurgeon Adnan Siddiqui, MD. “It was clear he had little to no chance of survival without surgery.” “The Gates Vascular Institute was a completely different experience from the first two hospitals,” said Mark. “They acted quickly, deliberately, and with a lot of confidence. We knew Andy was in the best possible hands. The team explained everything throughout the entire process. I can’t say enough about how skilled they are and how grateful we are for what they did for Andy. “ Andy spent four weeks in Buffalo General Medical Center’s medical rehabilitation unit where he received intensive physical, speech and occupational therapy. According to Andy, “therapy was pretty hard work after what I’d been through, but every day I improved a little bit more, which really motivated me. I couldn’t wait to get home and back to my life.” Today Andy is nearly back to normal. He enjoys spending time with his friends and family and-weather permitting-taking long walks with his girlfriend, Jenn and her dog Phoenix, who has been an important part of Andy’s recovery-even visiting him in the hospital.

The Full Spectrum of Care

Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital has built a strong reputation for providing high quality, compassionate care for all who live and work in this community. In recent years, a growing partnership with CCS Oncology, support from the Women’s Board of Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital and the Anthony V. Mannino Foundation has enabled the hospital to expand its oncological services and invest in technology that offers patients nationally distinguished cancer detection, top rated surgeons and compassionate care right in their own back yard. An alliance with the Anthony V. Mannino Foundation led to construction of a family suite that provides “tweeners” who are battling cancer with a unique setting filled with comfort, compassion and hope. A $250,000 gift from the Women’s Board helped purchase one of the most advanced mammography screening systems available in the country, and proceeds Tony and Cindy Mannino in front of the plaque on display from Kaleida signature events (Kaleida Classic and Kaleida Ball) equipped a outside of “Anthony’s Room” specialized operating room to accommodate a growing demand for oncology services with a focus on early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Millard Suburban has responded to this vital community need by launching a one-of-a-kind cancer survivorship and rehabilitation program that will address the full spectrum of a patient’s needs throughout the medical process. The program provides a navigator to assist individuals in identifying their specific needs regardless of where they are in their course of treatment and connects them with the vital services they require. Unique to Millard Suburban’s approach is STAR Program® certification. Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation, or STAR, is a national, evidence-based program that provides extensive oncological rehabilitation and survivorship training to clinicians in their field of expertise including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and dietetics. This program improves oncology care and closes an important gap by addressing a patient’s emotional, physical and financial needs from start to finish — even if symptoms surface long after treatment has ended. Thanks to philanthropic support, Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital remains a vital resource for our community in providing the full spectrum of care — today and always.
