FEELING AT HOME ON THE ROAD Already recognized as college basketball’s biggest party, the GCU Havocs frequently extend their antics far beyond the walls of GCU Arena. The Havocs take their show on the road when possible and transform opposing and neutral-site venues into a decidedly pro-purple party. Things were no different on Dec. 5 when GCU played in Talking Stick Resort Arena against St. John’s. An excess of 1,500 GCU students made their collective voice heard in front of a national TV audience in the BBVA Compass Valley of the Sun Showcase. While the Havocs were certainly there for GCU’s matchup with St. John’s, they were in their seats early enough to cheer in-state ally, Arizona, to a big win over No. 7 Texas A&M. Arizona players took to Twitter following their win to compliment the Havocs on their antics to force key missed free throws down the stretch. In a 2016 road contest against No. 19 Arizona in Tucson, Wildcats head coach Sean Miller noted he witnessed a McKale Center first. “In my eight years, I’ve never seen a student section in McKale filled with the visitors,” Miller said. “They had a whole section. You could hear them cheering. You could just tell they’ve got a great spirit about what they’re doing, and that’s to Grand Canyon’s credit.” “I always hear the Havocs, they’re my guys, they’re the best.” Majerle said after the narrow loss. “They travel well. We’re lucky to have them.” A yearly road trip tradition has quickly developed with bus loads of Havocs making the 12-hour round trip journey to Las Cruces, N.M. for the program’s budding rivalry with WAC foe New Mexico State. A first-year appearance in the WAC Tournament also saw Havocs make the trek to Las Vegas and helped will the Lopes to an appearance in the WAC Championship game. Plans are already underway for Havocs to travel to the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton, Calif., the Colangelo Classic in Downtown Phoenix, a nonconference game at San Diego, and other games throughout the 2018-19 season.

TUESDAY OCT. 30 60 7 P.M. 97 PHOENIX, ARIZ. MONTANA STATE BILLINGS GRAND CANYON

DAN MAJERLE POSTGAME QUOTES: (opening statement) “It was a great second half. I thought the first half obviously we were a little nervous. That first group wasn’t very good defensively and on the boards, really lacked it. I thought the second group was extremely good offensively and defensively. We built a great lead and scored maybe 20 points in the last three minutes when I put that first group back in at the end of the first half. Lit into them a little bit in the locker room and the good thing is that first group really responded. Came out in the second half and played a lot better. Concerned about the rebounding first half, we out rebounded them the second half, it was much better. Overall, very happy with how we played. Got the first one out of the way. It’s always a little intimidating, especially, I don’t care if you’ve been here last year, to play in front of that crowd takes a little getting used to. We have the best crowd in all of basketball. I’m sure those guys were a little shell shocked in the beginning.” (on how proud he was of the team’s ability to respond in the second half) “They have to. We can’t play a bad first half, especially that first group. All of those guys are either returners or older guys, so they should understand they have to go out and play hard defensively. I was just more concerned, especially with our size, that we weren’t able to rebound. Just lacked the hustle on the defensive side. Offensively I thought we turned down a lot of shots early. We are a good shooting team and we turned down a lot of shots that we should’ve shot but the effort just wasn’t there. Thank goodness for that second team because they really gave it to them in the second half.” (on G Trey Dreschel giving the offense a different look)“Trey’s got great size and he’s just learn- ing as a point guard. Damari is going to be fine, the kid just doesn’t breathe. He gets so nervous, just gets caught up. He’s got to learn to relax and play his game, not do too much, just do what he’s supposed to do and get the next guy open and sometimes he just tries to force too much. A lot of that has to do with him being nervous. Trey is a fifth-year senior. We know where he came from, that’s a good school that has some good competition and I’m proud of the way he’s played. He had to pick up a lot of the point guards and he’s done a good job.” (on what the game showed that they can be offensively)“I think we can really shoot the ball and we’ve seen that every day in practice. I shouldn’t have to beg guys to shoot, sometimes I do. We have to be unselfish, we can’t let the ball stick. If you don’t have a shot, I tell them all the time, you have to shoot it, drive it or move it. We are not going to have guys that go one-on-one. You have to move it and spread the floor, if you’re open shoot it. I thought Michael (Finke) turned down a couple of good looks and when he lets it go I think it’s going in. I thought Alè still has a long way to go, especially in the post. He’s too quick in there sometimes and he’s off balance. But he’s got to RAPID RECAP: do a better job defensively, rebound the ball. Offensively he’s going to be good, he’s a talented kid. The Lopes had runs of 15-0 and 19-0 to demolish Montana State Billings 97--60 in an exhibition game I thought Oscar was great, Carlos really figured it out in the second half, J.J. for not practicing in at a sold-out GCU Arena. the last week and a half, two weeks, you can see why he was a good player at all his levels because he’s just a bull and goes after guys, I thought Matt Jackson was really good, just another fifth year GCU put five scorers in double figures and shot 58.8 percent from the field with big men Michael guy that knows what he’s doing especially at the defensive end. Overall everybody played pretty Finke, a senior power forward who transferred from Illinois, and Alessandro Lever, a sophomore well.” center, each scoring 16 points on combined 14-of-21 shooting. (on what the second unit provides for the team) “Well I think we change, the first group is GCU missed six of its first eight shots before taking command. The Lopes missed their first six a bigger group, we play a more of a conventional style defense. That second group we play a 3-point shots but hit 50 percent of their 3s for the remainder of the game. switching defense that’s very aggressive, they get after it. All of the guys can guard, Roberts (Blumbergs) does a good job out there at 6’10 guarding guys. And it really throws the offense off GCU scored on six consecutive possessions with the first five coming on the interior, where soph- of what they’re used to when you start switching, and it kind of takes them out of their plays. And omore center Alessandro Lever worked the post and senior newcomer Michael Finke showed his they moved the ball really well so we have two really different groups that can play two different repertoire by scoring on a hook and setting up Lever. types of defense.” Senior point guard Trey Drechsel, a transfer from Western Washington, helped spur the offense as (on the home crowd) “It amazes me every time. I was so excited for Louis (Wilson), I told him the first sub off the bench. The Lopes went on a 15-0 run, shutting out MSU Billings for more than five ‘when you see this crowd for an exhibition game you’re going to be amazed.’ Every day he comes minutes. to work he’s amazed with the staff, and everything around campus you just look at crowd we have The Lopes led 27-10 with eight of the points coming from Lever but six other GCU players already and they sway back and forth, it’s just makes you so grateful that you’re able to come to work here scoring to show off this season’s depth. every day and to play in front of that crowd. I tell our guys all the time that you can’t take that for granted, that just doesn’t happen.” The Lopes’ lead slipped to 41-32 by halftime but quickly widened to start the second half. The GCU defense intensified, creating turnovers on four of the Yellowjackets’ first five possessions. With (on if the lineup could change) “Oh no question, I started Trey (Drechsel) in the second half, I Drechsel starting the second half at point, the Lopes surged back to a 17-point lead in the first 4:10. thought he was more focused that Damari (Milstead). It may all change, we never know what is going to happen. Right now Gerard (Martin) didn’t play, had a little back strain. So we really have 11 Carlos Johnson added 15 points for the Lopes while Frayer scored 14 . Drechsel led on the boards guys on scholarship, Isaiah (Brown) is our twelfth scholarship guy who’s got to sit out transferring with seven rebounds in 21 minutes, in which GCU was plus-32. from Northwestern. So we have 11 guys and all 11 could start, there’s no question about it.”
