Species concepts were formed by using a combination of morphological characters and nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. The total number of Baetidae species in Australia isn't yet known as five species of Centroptilum and Cloeon known from adults have not yet been associated with larvae. The exposure can cause direct effects on all levels of biological organisation, while the toxicant mode of action largely determines which group of organisms (primary producers, microorganisms, invertebrates or fish) is affected. Due to the interconnectedness of freshwater communities, direct effects can entail several indirect effects that are categorised and discussed. The duration of effects depends on the recovery potential of the affected organisms, which is determined by several key factors. Long-term effects of pesticides have been shown to occur in the field. However, the extent of the effects is currently uncertain, mainly because of a lack of large-scale data on pesticide peak concentrations. In the final section, we elucidate the different approaches to predict effects of pesticides on freshwater ecosystems. Various techniques and approaches from the individual level to the ecosystem level are available. When used complementary they allow for a relatively accurate prediction of effects on a broad scale, though the predictive strength is rather limited when it comes to the local scale. Further advances in the risk assessment of pesticides require the incorporation and extension of ecological knowledge. -

179 METABOLIC RATES OF EPHEMERID NYMPHS FROM SWIFTLY FLOWING AND FROM STILL WATERS BY H. MUNRO FOX, B. G. SIMMONDS AND R. WASHBOURN. (From the Zoology Department, University of Birmingham.) (Received 15th December, 1934.) I. INTRODUCTION. IT was shown in 1933 by Fox and Simmonds that certain species of mayfly nymphs (Baetis rhodam) and caddis larvae (Hydropsyche sp.) from a swift stream have a considerably higher oxygen consumption than nearly related and equal sized ephemerids (Chloeon dipterum) and trichopterids (Limnopktlus vittatus1) from a pond, and that, within the confines of a single species of isopod Crustacea (Asellus aquaticus), individuals from a swift stream consume more oxygen than animals from sluggishly flowing water. The oxygen uptake was in each case measured under standard and similar conditions. We have now obtained further evidence of the same phenomenon with other species of ephemerids and we have studied the comparative survival of nymphs in low concentrations of dissolved oxygen. The new results are reported below. Two small species were studied, namely Coenis sp. and Ephemerella ignita. Coenis was found clinging to Lemna floating on the same pond at Alvechurch, Worcestershire, from which Chloeon had previously been taken. Ephemerella occurred on submerged roots in the same stream at Blakedown, Worcestershire, that harbours Baetis, but in less rapidly flowing water than the latter. The oxygen consumption of Coenis and Ephemerella was measured on the same day that the animals were caught. Three large species were also studied and compared with one another. These were Ephemera vulgata, E. danica and Ecdyonurus venosus. Nymphs of the first-named species were found burrowing in mud at the edges of a small pond near Newdigate in Surrey. -

A neotype of C. praetextum was designated from Bengtsson's original collection. The de scription of nymphs and imagines of C. schoenemundi Bengtsson and imago male of C. degrangei n.sp. are given on the basis of material from France. The taxonomic validity and systematic position of the species C. hovassei (Verrier), C. rabaudi (Verrier) and C. /anguidum Grandi are discussed. Species Composition of Macroinvertebrates in Medium-Sized Lithuanian Rivers

The article is devoted to the analysis of the taxonomic composition of macroinvertebrates in 17 medium-sized Lithuanian rivers with different kinds of substrata. One hundred and sixty taxa of invertebrates were identified in the course of the study. The obtained results proved that in the same river the number of taxa and Shannon-Weavers index of diversity are substratum type dependent. The greatest number of taxa was established in the stone substratum while the smallest was recorded in the sand one. The richest biodiversity and the highest Shannon-Weavers index in the stone substratum were recorded in the Jiesia River. Rivers with increased organic contamination were dominated by Trichoptera of the genus Hydropsyche. Why Adult Mayflies of Cloeon Dipterum (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae)
Why adult mayflies of Cloeon dipterum (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) become smaller as temperature warms Bernard W. Sweeney1,3, David H. Funk1,4, Allison A. Camp2,5, David B. Buchwalter2,6, and John K. Jackson1,7 1Stroud Water Research Center, Avondale, Pennsylvania 19311 USA 2North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina 27695 USA Abstract: We reared Cloeon dipterum from egg hatch to adult at 10 constant temperatures (12.1–33.57C) to test 3 hypotheses (thermal equilibrium hypothesis, temperature size rule [TSR], and O2- and capacity-limited thermal tolerance [OCLTT]) that account for variation in life-history traits across thermal gradients. Male and female adult size declined ~67 and 78% and larval development time declined ~88% with warming; chronic survivorship (ther- mal limit for population growth) was highest from 16.2 to 23.97C (mean 5 85%) and declined to 0 at 33.57C; thresholds for 0 growth and development were 10.0 and 10.77C, respectively; peak rate of population increase (r) occurred at 27.87C; rates of growth and development were maximal at 307C; fecundity was greatest at 12.17C; and between 14.3 and 307C, growth and development rates increased linearly and the number of degree days (>10.77C) to complete development was nearly constant (mean 5 271). Acute survivorship during short-term ther- mal ramping was 0 at 407C. Warming temperature caused development rate to increase proportionately faster than growth rate; male and female adult size to decrease as per TSR, with adult females ~5Â larger at 12.1 than 31.77C; adult size to decrease proportionately more for females than males; and fecundity to decrease proportionately more than adult female size.
