PROGRAMS OFFERED The department offers training for residents in anatomic (AP), clinical pathology (CP) and combined anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP). Rotations in anatomic and clinical pathology are integrated throughout the training period for AP/CP trainees. Flexibility is maintained to meet the special interests of the residents. Residents are involved in a variety of intra- and interdepartmental conferences, and emphasis is placed on training the pathologist as a clinical consultant. Residents are encouraged to become involved in research, and financial support is available for resident projects and travel to present research findings. Active research areas within the department include immunopathology, cellular and molecular immunology, and cell and tumor . Residents actively participate in teaching allied health students and medical students.

TYPES AND NUMBERS OF APPOINTMENTS Twenty pathology residency positions and 7 subspecialty fellowship positions are available, with an average of 5 residents in each year of training. The number of residents apportioned to straight AP or CP training versus combined AP/CP training is flexible.

FACILITIES The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) is a state-of-the-art medical facility with over 700 inpatient beds. There are over 3,000,000 laboratory determinations annually, including over 42,600 surgical pathology accessions; 1,200 bone marrow examinations; 11,420 gynecologic cytology acessions; 7,100 nongynecologic cytologies, including 2,600 fine needle aspirations (FNA); and 400 autopsies. The Pathology Department maintains flow cytometry, EM, fluorescence microscopy, , animal pathology, and digital image cores for its investigators. In addition, the College of operates state-of-the-art research facilities, including DNA, microscopy, flow cytometry, protein analysis (X-ray crystallography, ESR, NMR), gene vector, and mouse transgenic and gene targeting cores. The clinical and research laboratories at the nearby Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) are affiliated with the residency program at the University of Iowa. Annually, the VAMC performs approximately 1,300,000 laboratory tests, including 4,500 surgical pathology specimens, and over 3,000 cytology specimens.

COMMUNITY Nestled among eastern Iowa's rolling hills along the banks of the Iowa River is a vibrant, university community with features of big city living in a safe, affordable community. Located less than 4 hours west of Chicago, Iowa City, along with Coralville and surrounding Johnson County, have a population of over 130,000. The University of Iowa is home to the internationally known Iowa Writers Workshop and International Writing Program, as well as the Iowa Center for the Arts. Sports enthusiasts appreciate Big Ten conference athletics with most venues within walking distance of the hospital and downtown. The Iowa City and Coralville communities offer museums, galleries, theater performances, concerts and events, including the Riverside Shakespeare Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival, and Summer Arts festival. There are dozens of beautiful neighborhood parks linked by miles of paved bike and walking paths. Nearby Lake Macbride State Park and Coralville Reservoir offer thousands of acres of woodlands, prairie and water for hiking, camping, fishing, boating, sailing and mountain biking. The University of Iowa, with enrollment of over 27,000 students and 3,900 full-time and visiting faculty, offers a full spectrum of educational opportunities. The local school systems are a valued community asset with area schools boasting a 97 percent graduation rate and some of the nation's highest percentages of National Merit Scholars. Professional, technical and manufacturing opportunities are offered by a number of large, local employers, including The University of Iowa, American College Testing (ACT), Rockwell International and Pearson NCS.

STIPENDS AND MAINTENANCE The following levels were offered for 2016-17: first year $54,300; second year $56,300; third year $58,300; fourth year $60,200. Residents are provided with professional liability insurance, and white coats. Resident physicians enjoy single health and dental coverage at no premium and coverage for dependents at very competitive rates. Outpatient services are available at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and affiliated quick care facilities. A Voluntary Retirement Savings Program (VRSP) is open to all House staff who receive earned compensation with Federal, State and FICA tax deductions from the University of Iowa.
