Teacher EducationJames Quarterly, Trier Spring 2010 Representations of Education in HBO’s The Wire, Season 4 By James Trier The Wire is a crime drama that aired for five seasons on the Home Box Of- fice (HBO) cable channel from 2002-2008. The entire series is set in Baltimore, Maryland, and as Kinder (2008) points out, “Each season The Wire shifts focus to a different segment of society: the drug wars, the docks, city politics, education, and the media” (p. 52). The series explores, in Lanahan’s (2008) words, an increasingly brutal and coarse society through the prism of Baltimore, whose postindustrial capitalism has decimated the working-class wage and sharply divided the haves and have-nots. The city’s bloated bureaucracies sustain the inequality. The absence of a decent public-school education or meaningful political reform leaves an unskilled underclass trapped between a rampant illegal drug economy and a vicious “war on drugs.” (p. 24) My main purpose in this article is to introduce season four of The Wire—the “education” season—to readers who have either never seen any of the series, or who have seen some of it but James Trier is an not season four. The Wonder Years Episode & Music Guide “What would you do if I sang out of tune … would you stand up and walk out on me?" 6 seasons, 115 episodes and hundreds of great songs – this is “The Wonder Years”. This Episode & Music Guide offers a comprehensive overview of all the episodes and all the songs played during the show. The episode guide is based on the first complete TWY episode guide which was originally posted in the newsgroup rec.arts.tv in 1993. It was compiled by Kirk Golding with contributions by Kit Kimes. It was in turn based on the first TWY episode guide ever put together by Jerry Boyajian and posted in the newsgroup rec.arts.tv in September 1991. Both are used with permission. The music guide is the work of many people. Shane Hill and Dawayne Melancon corrected and inserted several songs. Kyle Gittins revised the list; Matt Wilson and Arno Hautala provided several corrections. It is close to complete but there are still a few blank spots. Used with permission. L.A.'s Finest No 1.0 2021 A much too gritty and graphic cop / crime drama.. Abandoned Mr Mayor No 0.5 2021 This sitcom pilot was too stupid and acrimonious. I did not get far. Abandoned New Tricks OK 1.0 2021 A slightly humorous 2004 UK police procedural. A team of retired old school Disposable male cops lead by a not so young female detective investigates old crimes. The personal life bits are weak but the detective interactions are good. Queen's Gambit OK 1.0 2021 A 7 part miniseries on Netflix about a young damaged and addicted character Disposable who just happens to be a chess prodigy too. It's about 33% too long. Resident Alien No 1.0 2021 Two votes. One= nothing was happening. Two= it was dumb. We gave up less Abandoned than half way. Later I finished it & it was OK at 120% speed= not worth it. Shetland No 1.0 202 Slow, dour, dark. and nasty police murder investigation series in the Shetlands. Abandoned Well done, but way to unlikable to watch. Vera No 1.5 2021 A well done police murder detective show but too long, slow, and depressing Abandoned (even the irascible protagonist). -

PREVIOUSLY ON “Cut the Shitcom”: Meta-television in Entourage, Extras and 30 Rock Toni Pape Introduction The last decade has seen a number of fictional TV series about television and film production. These television shows – including the ones to be analysed here: Entourage, Extras, and 30 Rock – relocate the process of creative revitalization in front of the camera. Meta-television, as I understand it here, then is television about the media industry and, more particularly, about the production and quality of film and television itself.1 The three above-mentioned television programs present contemporary writers, actors, directors, etc. working on movies and television shows. Especially Extras and 30 Rock offer a critical overview of how television formats are produced, and they significantly do so in a period of time during which the working conditions for television-makers have fundamentally changed. In a most general sense, the criticism that these shows purport works on two levels. First, as we will see further on, there is an explicit criticism implied in the way the TV shows at hand present the making of a TV show. Thus, there is for instance Andy Millman, the protagonist of Extras about whom I will have more to say later on, who clearly states his dissatisfaction as a disillusioned actor/writer: ANDY: I wanna do something that I’m proud of. And I won’t be proud of shouting out catch phrases in a stupid wig and funny glasses. […] So basically, I’m not going to prostitute myself anymore or my work, ok? (Extras “Orlando Bloom”, 21’30”) In a very outspoken way, the programs in question take stock of television’s outworn creative standards and its resulting mediocrity. -

Ryan Reynolds - Biography - 10/13/16 RYAN REYNOLDS is one of Hollywood’s most diverse leading men seamlessly transitioning through varied genres of drama, action and comedy in his rich and ever evolving career. Reynolds is the star of the 20th Century Fox record breaking film DEADPOOL. The movie opened in February 2016 and shattered expectations, opening to $152.2 million over the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend making it the biggest R-rated opening of all time and the biggest February opening in box office history. The superhero juggernaut also replaced “Matrix Reloaded” as the highest-grossing R-rated film in history with more than $750 million globally. Reynolds who also produced the film is currently working on a script for DEADPOOL 2 with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wemick which will begin shooting in 2017. Reynolds recently completed production on two film's LIFE and THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD. In LIFE, he teamed up once again with Reese and Wemick,for the sci-fi thriller which will be released May 26, 2017. In THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD Reynolds stars opposite Samuel L Jackson in the Patrick Hughes film which will be released in August 2017. Reynolds body of work is extremely diverse. In 2015 he starred in a variety of feature roles including MISSISSIPPI GRIND, WOMAN IN GOLD, THE VOICES and SELFESS. MISSISSIPPI GRIND directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden premiered at Sundance to rave reviews. In The Weinstein Company’s WOMAN IN GOLD, Reynolds starred alongside Helen Mirren to tell the stoiy of Maria Altmann (Mirren), a Jewish refugee who is forced to flee Vienna during World War II and her personal mission to reclaim a painting the Nazis stole from her family: the famous Lady In Gold. -
