Writer in Residence 2018

The residency is a part-time position (5 days per month, for seven months) from March 2018. The principal objective of the programme is to support creative writing activity in local areas, by providing an engagement and interaction with people interested in writing, using the local library service as the centre for the programme.

The writer will provide a group workshop for two hours and one to one sessions for two hours with adult writers.

The designated libraries for 2018 are , Millstreet, , Skibbereen, Mallow and Bantry. (These may be subject to change)

Administrative support will be provided by the Arts Office.

As part of this residency, the successful applicant will be required to stimulate greater awareness of the art of creative writing.

The writer’s ability to mentor emerging writers, and those interested in developing their writing skills, must be clearly demonstrated in the application material.

The Residency is open to writers in all genres.

Objectives

• The residency will support individual writers and existing writing groups based in the designated libraries. • It will lead to the establishment of new groups in other branches. • The residency will develop the capacity of new and existing groups to be self- directed by the end of the residency. • It will present a number of public readings • It will raise awareness of publishing and competition opportunities for writers • It will support networking between individual writers and writing groups • It will support opportunities for engagement between the County Library and Arts Service and local communities

A contract for services fee of €5,950 inclusive of travel is offered, i.e. €850 per month The contract period will involve 5 days work per month for seven months – March, April, May, June, September, October and November

Payment will be on a monthly basis

Cork County Library and Arts Service may extend the 2018 residency into 2019 should circumstances require it, subject to mutual agreement with the appointed 2018 writer.

Application Requirements

Applicants are requested to submit the following material:

A curriculum vitae

Examples of previous work such as publications, programmes or published articles and/or reviews

A proposal outlining artistic ideas and approaches (max 500 words) which should include ideas in relation to public engagement during the residency and detailed suggestions for workshops or public/community engagement.

The proposal should also set out how the group will be enabled to function independently once the residency has ceased.

Two letters of reference

Applicants must submit three copies of CV and proposal. Applicants may be called to interview on the basis of their submission.
