ANSWERED ON:03.08.2005 PROMOTION of SPORTS Khanna Shri Avinash Rai GOVERNMENT OF INDIA YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO:1459 ANSWERED ON:03.08.2005 PROMOTION OF SPORTS Khanna Shri Avinash Rai Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state: (a) the names of the sports for promotion of which grants are provided by the Government; (b) the amount released for this purpose during the last three years, State-wise; and (c) the results achieved in respect of these sports? Answer MINISTER OF STATE IN THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE (SHRI PRITHVIRAJ CHAVAN) (a) & (b) : The Government of India has recognized various disciplines and categorized them in three categories - 'Priority', 'General' and 'Others', as per Annexure-I. The Government provides financial assistance to the recognized National Sports Federations (NSFs) for promotion o f the related sports under the scheme of 'Assistance to National Sports Federations'. The details of assistance provided to recognized NSFs for these disciplines during the last three years are given at Annexure II. The central grants had also been provided for development of sport infrastructure. Details of central assistance released under the Scheme for Creation of Sports Infrastructure for the last three years are given at Annexure III. In addition, assistance is provided for promotion of sports & games in schools, All India Rural Sports Tournaments and for conducting National Sports Festival for Women. The details of amounts released for these schemes during the last three years are given at Annexure IV, V & VI. (c) The details of medals won by sportspersons in various sports in the last Olympic, Asian and Commonwealth Games as well as other recent important international championships is given at Annexure-VII.     THE CARROM EUROCUP – DEFINITION AND FORMAT THE EUROCUP is the European Carrom Championship held once a year in the period between June and September in rotation by the affiliated nations of European Carrom Confederation. National federations should communicate their availability to host the Eurocup two years in advance according to the existing order. When new countries join ECC the order will be changed according to their availability. The order at present is: Czech Republic – Italy – France – Germany – Poland – UK – Switzerland. Confirmation of date and venue should be given one year in advance. Official invitation letter should be sent to Federations/Associations 4 months in advance. All players must register through official federations. ELIGIBILITY WHO CAN PLAY The Eurocup is not an Open event. Participation is restricted to players from European countries or any other nations officially or temporarily affiliated to the ECC. Individual players not belonging to officially registered carrom associations may only participate upon approval by ECC. No players who have played for a national team in a non European country may rank in the Eurocup. Players who abandon their national federation illegally cannot play for a European National Team even if they obtain citizenship in the new country. In the Singles and Doubles events all players officially resident, and actually living in Europe (right of abode, work permit etc) for at least three years in a participating country may take part. "I am delighted with the performances of Manuel and Wajahat who were able to withstand the tremendous pressure on world class level" says an excited Francis after finishing fourth, a finish which will not be easy to replicate.
