Captain. But going back to when the club was formed in 1754 - 22 noblemen and gentlemen of Fife presented a Silver Club to be played for annually over the Links of St Andrews. The winner became Captain for the year which continued up to 1805. In 1806 the Club began playing for theGold Medalat the Autumn Meeting and it is likely that the Captaincy became an elected office at that time.In 1834, King William IV agreed to become the Patron of the Club and the Society of St Andrews Golfers became The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. The members began playing for theSilver Crossat the Spring Meeting of 1836 and the following year, King William IV presented the Club with theRoyal Medal. This supplanted the Gold Medal as the principal prize at the Autumn Meeting. On the death of King William IV his widow presented the Queen Adelaide Medal in 1838 which and was and still is worn by the Captain of The R & A Club. This was the fore runner to today's Captain's Drive In - where the Captain competes on his own for the Queen's Adelaide medal and after completing his drive and being the only competitor he is awarded his medal as the outright winner and becomes Captain of the club.
