Scottish Wildcat © Scottish Wildcat Action 2 Chairman’s Message Anyone glancing at this latest Biodiversity Action Plan for Tayside could be forgiven for feeling a little daunted at the scale of the tasks identified in the Actions. Indeed, the scale of what we need to do over the years ahead is large if we are to pass on to our future generations a land that is as rich and varied in all its forms of life as the one that we have inherited. The hope that we can rise to this challenge comes from the sheer goodwill of so many people and organisations willing to give their time and effort to look after our wildlife, whether it be found in the remoter hills or closer to home in our towns and villages. Great examples of what can be achieved when we work together with a little direction and thought applied can be found throughout the following pages. This Action Plan arrives at a time of great uncertainty, particularly in rural areas which have been so dependent on public funding for so much of our land use. Following the Brexit vote, we have to take the view that this must be an opportunity to improve on our delivery of so many of the tasks identified in this Plan and others which, if achieved, will improve the life of all of us along with all the many forms of life that we share this country with. -

Landscape Wind Energy Capacity Study
Landscape Character Type 13: Rolling Farmland and Estates Introduction This character type occurs in four separate areas within Argyll and Bute. This assessment considers the areas on the mainland in the Helensburgh, Roseneath Peninsula and Toward Point areas only. A separate assessment has been undertaken for the ‘Bute Rolling Farmland and Estates’ (13a) because of its different context and the requirement of the study brief for turbines under 50m height only to be considered for islands within Argyll and Bute. This sensitivity assessment considers both larger and smaller development typologies. Operational and consented wind farm development There is no operational or consented wind farm development located within this character type. The operational Cruach Mhor wind farm is theoretically visible from the western tip of Toward Point at around 20km distance. The operational wind farm of Ardrossan, located in North Ayrshire, is visible from parts of the Toward Point but seen at distances over 20km. The consented Kelburn wind farm and the operational wind farm of Dalry, both located in North Ayrshire, may also be visible from this area. Summary of sensitivity The Rolling Farmland and Estates character type comprises three small low-lying areas on the tips of the Rosneath Peninsula, Toward Point and in the Helensburgh/Cardross area. They all lie in prominent locations on the edge of the Firth of Clyde. These landscapes are principally characterised by the presence of designed landscapes with wooded policies, strongly enclosed pastures and a number of landmark historic and archaeological features. They are backed by the more extensive hill slopes of the ‘Open Ridgeland’ (5) and ‘Steep Ridgeland and Mountains’ (1) landscape character types and provide a strong and scenic contrast with these simpler upland landscapes and the narrow sea lochs and basin of the Firth of Clyde. -

International Forest Fire News (IFFN) No. 30 (January – June 2004, 84-93) Prescribed Fire in a Scottish Pinewood: a Summary of Recent Research at Glen Tanar Estate, Aberdeenshire, Scotland Summary The role of natural disturbance in maintaining important ecological processes in natural Scots Pine woodland is becoming increasingly recognised. With increasing pressure to secure the future of pinewood species such as the Capercaillie (Tetrao urugallis), it has become necessary to develop innovative management techniques to manipulate habitat conditions in the absence of browsing pressure. The use of prescribed fire is one of the most promising such management techniques, and is widely used for resource management in similar ecosystems in North America and Australia. Preliminary research conducted at Glen Tanar Estate has demonstrated the potential benefits of prescribed burning, and has produced a number of useful insights to help shape the development of this technique in Scotland. Introduction The complex role of fire in the ecology of natural Scots’ pine forest is well documented for many parts of its extensive distribution (Goldammer and Furyaev 1996), where fire is accepted as an important natural factor in the maintenance of a mosaic of forest types at the landscape scale. In Scotland, however, fire has generally been ignored as an ecological variable even though it has potentially positive attributes. This is presumably because the negative impacts of fire on native woodland have historically been very serious (Steven and Carlisle 1959) and there is an understandable fear of wildfire and its risks to person and property. Also the likelihood of fire occurring and its consequent ecological importance as a disturbance event is easily overlooked the oceanic climate of the United Kingdom. -

Quaternary of Scotland THE GEOLOGICAL CONSERVATION REVIEW SERIES The comparatively small land area of Great Britain contains an unrivalled sequence of rocks, mineral and fossil deposits, and a variety of landforms that span much of the earth's long history. Well-documented ancient volcanic episodes, famous fossil sites, and sedimentary rock sections used internationally as comparative standards, have given these islands an importance out of all proportion to their size. These long sequences of strata and their organic and inorganic contents, have been studied by generations of leading geologists thus giving Britain a unique status in the development of the science. Many of the divisions of geological time used throughout the world are named after British sites or areas, for instance the Cambrian, Ordovician and Devonian systems, the Ludlow Series and the Kimmeridgian and Portlandian stages. The Geological Conservation Review (GCR) was initiated by the Nature Conservancy Council in 1977 to assess, document, and ultimately publish accounts of the most important parts of this rich heritage. The GCR reviews the current state of knowledge of the key earth-science sites in Great Britain and provides a firm basis on which site conservation can be founded in years to come. Each GCR volume describes and assesses networks of sites of national or international importance in the context of a portion of the geological column, or a geological, palaeontological, or mineralogical topic. The full series of approximately 50 volumes will be published by the year 2000. Within each individual volume, every GCR locality is described in detail in a self- contained account, consisting of highlights (a precis of the special interest of the site), an introduction (with a concise history of previous work), a description, an interpretation (assessing the fundamentals of the site's scientific interest and importance), and a conclusion (written in simpler terms for the non-specialist). -

1 The Best of Walking in Scotland Scotland is a land of contrasts—an ancient country with a modern outlook, where well-loved traditions mingle with the latest technology. Here you can tread on some of the oldest rocks in the world and wander among standing stones and chambered cairns erected 5,000 years ago. However, that little cottage you pass may have a high-speed Internet connection and be home to a jewelry designer or an architect of eco-friendly houses. Certainly, you’ll encounter all the shortbread and tartan you expect, though kilts are normally reserved for weddings and football matches. But far more traditional, although less obviously so, is the warm welcome you’ll receive from the locals. The farther you go from the big cities, the more time people have to talk—you’ll find they have a genuine interest in where you come from and what you do. Scotland’s greatest asset is its clean, green landscapes, where walkers can fill their lungs with pure, fresh air. It may only be a wee (small) country, but it has a variety of walks to rival anywhere in the world. As well as the splendid mountain hikes to be found in the Highlands, there’s an equal extent of Lowland terrain with gentle riverside walks and woodland strolls. The indented coastline and numerous islands mean that there are thousands of miles of shore to explore, while the many low hills offer exquisite views over the countryside. There’s walking to suit all ages and tastes. Some glorious countryside with rolling farmland, lush woods, and grassy hills can be reached within an hour’s drive of Edinburgh and Glasgow. -

Chapter Eight The Stones of the Southern Highlands Moving on from the stones of the Lowlands and the Southern Uplands, the last stone encountered, the Wallace Putting Stone could easily have been included in this section and certainly when standing on Sheriffmuir, the expanse of the Southern Highlands to the north are so close and almost tangible. There are no distinguishing boundaries for the stones in this section and as a base either the towns of Callander or Aberfeldy should be considered. All but one of the stones are located in the ancient county of Perthshire although some through boundary changes are now in Stirlingshire but regardless, in the days when the Gaelic was spoken and stones were lifted this was entirely Perthshire. The majority of these stones are hemmed in by one of the major trunk roads to the Highlands and the A9 gives access to many of the stones mentioned. If making a tour of the stones, and including the Wallace Putting Stone, an almost oval loop allows testing them all within a day without too much travelling by car. From the Wallace Putting Stone it is 40 mins to the Sadlin Mare and then less than 30 mins to the Menzies Stone. From here it is 30 mins to the famed Bodach in Glen Lyon and 60 mins later the Ardvorlich Stone followed by a short 15 min drive to Balquhidder for the Puterach. This circuit, which has now been carried out on a more than a few occasions has been referred to as the “Perthshire Loop” and any stone lifting visit to Scotland would probably commence on the same lines.
