Abstract
Transversedensitydistributionsprofilesalongthelongitudinalshowerpathforinclinedshowersarestud- 20 ied.ProtoninducedairshowersaregeneratedusingtheprogramAIRES,withprimaryenergyupto 10 eV. Definingappropriatecoordinatetransformations,theparticledensityatvaryingatmosphericdepthandzenith angleisanalysed.
Theenergiesoftheultrahighenergycosmicraysaredeterminedwithgoodprecisionbygroundarrays usingtheparticledensityatagivendistanceoftheshowercore(Hillas,1971;Dai,1988;Yoshida,1995). Extensiveairshowerparticlestravelasthindiskwhichmoves,essentiallyatthespeedoflight,inthedirection oftheincomingprimarycosmicrayparticle.Theairshowerdiskfirstgrowsandthencontractsasitpasses downthroughtheatmosphere.Groundlevelattheseenergiesisnormallybeyondthepointofmaximum development.Theparticlesspreadoutlaterallyfromtheshoweraxisinapancake-likeshowerfront.The highestdensityisneartheaxis,fallingoffrapidlywithincreasingcoredistance. ThegeometryoftheshowerhasbeenstudiedbyPryke(1998),suggestingthataninvertedconeshould beareasonablefirstapproximationtothesurfacerepresentingtheparticleisodensityinathree-dimensional spaceovertime.Inthisrepresentation,andneglectingapossibleasymmetryduetotheearth’smagneticfield (Pryke,1998;Sciutto1999a),theisodensitycontoursforverticalshowersarecirclesatdifferentlevelsinthe atmosphere.
