Bishop’s Letter

The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, as Keats put it, is upon us; so, too, is the season of harvest festivals. We are surrounded by reminders of the fruitfulness of the earth in our part of the country. There can be few dioceses in the Church of more aware of the importance of harvest than our own. Its success or failure goes a long way to shaping the economic present and future of us all. Respecting the good things that God has given us in the gift of creation, thanking God for that gift, remembering that we are stewards of it; these are all important things to do at this time of year. Giving thanks to God for the fruits of the earth is inherent in our tradition: the story of Cain and Abel in the fourth chapter of the book of Genesis revolves around the idea of giving an offering of thankfulness for God’s bounty in creation. The links to the literal harvest are plain to see at this time of year, but Harvest Thanksgiving can also be a time to give thanks to God for the fruits of all our labour – whatever that labour might be – and wherever the place of it. We might do all our work at home, caring for others in one capacity or another. Or we might go out to work. Indeed, we might do both, but the key point remains the same. As the people of God, it behoves us to recognise that ultimately our achievements come through the grace of God as much as by the work of our own hand. Above all, harvest is a sign of God’s superabundance of generosity: for God so loved the world that he gave his only on, so that all who believe in him may not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) It is that love and that life that we celebrate not only at Harvest but every week as we join together in worship and praise. +Christopher Lincoln:

A very big thank you to everyone who helped and contributed in any way to the Hundleby Harvest Festival on 15th September. A good congregation, in a beautifully decorated church, enjoyed the service led by Rev. Jean Coates (with help from Cedric the Camel). We were delighted to be able to give £100 and over 80 items of food to the Spilsby Community Larder based at the New Life Church. Thank you so much for your generosity. 6 SATURDAY COFFEE MORNINGS

Thank you to all the people who have supported the Saturday coffee mornings in any way...... making cakes, selling produce, arranging a tombola or raffle, serving coffee or buying it. It is very much appreciated. The money taken in September will go to the Flower Fund. The amount of money raised will be put in next month’s magazine. The last coffee morning will be on October 5th.

During the Autumn and Winter a number of people meet for coffee in All Wrapped Up from 10.30 - 11.30am. Anyone is welcome to join for a coffee and chat. We look forward to seeing you.

Harvest Harvest Thanksgiving is a given in the calendar of the Rural Church (or any British Church) but it does not seem to attract the following that it once did. Or are we looking through rose coloured spectacles at an imagined past in which Churches were full and God was in his Heaven and all was well with the World?

The fact is that one of the challenges we face is not to see what we do now as diminished in light of the great years of the past but to understand that God is leading us to express his truths in a different way in a rapidly changing context. God’s gifts in creation are still as they always were but now we see the world in a different way. However much we may be steeped in traditional ways of expressing thanks we have to express that in a way that people can connect with today.

We are spending too much time on organising and reorganising the way that we work as a Church and are in danger of forgetting the essence of the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that God is really with us in all life’s changes, welcome or otherwise.

As we see the fruits of harvest pouring in at Harvest Festival we have a great opportunity in making that connection between where we are in relationship to God and his Creation. A God who is at home in a world of GPS guided Combines and International Development Programmes and is not (by us) to be confined to “garners” and “sheaves”. Like Christmas we must not put God safely into another world of our own creation and only look in at a few special times of year. Harvest challenges us to know God is in all things in the here and now. Every Blessing this Harvest Fr Peter

7 St. James’, Spilsby. Bill's Building Bulletin.

Kitchen, Loos & Pews - In the immortal words of Hedgehopper’s Anonymous, ITS GOOD NEWS WEEK!!!

Since the last bulletin, we’ve appointed Rodden & Cooper of Louth as our contractor. Also, we’ve agreed a target start date of Monday, the 11th November 2013. I’ll keep you up to date through future bulletins, but we’ll also issue further information via the pulpit. In the meantime, if anyone has any queries, don’t hesitate to contact either myself or Peter.

Fundraising - We are still urgently in need of further finance for this major project, so please help us if you can. We still need to make a final push.

James Howsam is still busy away on the new website and Fr. Martin has agreed to coordinate the content. Items to Fr. Martin, please.

Book Stall - The book stall at the back of the Church continues to help raise funds in a small (very) way for the redevelopment and we would welcome new stocks. BUT the only type of book that sells in any significant number is the paper back novel. So please, please, please, no hardbacks, no cook books, and definitely no old videos. Many thanks.

Finally - As always, please remember the Church building, & those who struggle to maintain & upgrade it, in your prayers.

God Bless, Bill.

Didn’t We Have A Lovely Time.

The summer of 2013 was wonderful, the sun shone, the sky was blue, the flowers bloomed, the crops grew, the harvest was successful.

Here in these Lincolnshire fields, Like the wind swaying the wheat and the grass, Blows the Spirit. The Spirit that hovered over the face of the void in the beginning, The Spirit that echoed, “Let the earth produce fresh growth” The breath of life that feeds me So that I may never hunger. In this very breath that I breathe Is the mystery of all created things. In these fields These Lincolnshire fields in summer and Harvest.

October 6th, 10.30am, St, Leonard’s Church, South Ormsby, This will be where we acknowledge our thanks to God. Put this date in BIG letters in your diary and we can thank God together for his many blessings. I know, I know, some of you have nothing but heartache and hurt to live through. I am not for one second belittling your suffering or ignoring your plight. The very least but also the very best we can do for those of you in this hideous position is not to forget you and to include you in our prayers and worship. People worshipping and praying together gives huge comfort and also hope to many.

May we always walk gently upon this earth, in right relationship, nurtured by your Love taking only what we need giving back to the earth in gratitude sharing what we have, honoring all with reverence, reconciling and healing. Mindful of those who will come after. Recognising our proper place as part of your creation. Grant us the strength and courage, we pray, for such radical transformation into your Kingdom. Amen 28
