Eucharist

The Seventh Sunday after Trinity

Sunday 18 July 2021

1100

Thank you for joining us in worship. You are in our prayers – and please pray for all those to whom we minister as a Cathedral.

A special welcome to members of The Mary Rose Trust and other supporters, joining us as we resume the annual remembrance of those who died on the ship - on the nearest Sunday to the date she sank: 19 July 1545.

At this service: the President is Canon Nick Ralph and the Preacher is the Canon Precentor. The music setting is the Coronation by W. A. Mozart (1756-1791). It is sung by the Hoc Exsilium Virtual - directed, recorded and edited by Sachin Gunga, our Cathedral Sub-Organist, as a project to help singers who were not able to sing with their usual during lockdown.

You might like to say this prayer before the service begins as a prayer of preparation:

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The President welcomes the congregation and introduces the service.

PRAYERS OF PENITENCE

Let us remember with sorrow that we are part of a fallen world, and that the seeds of war are in every human heart. So let us turn to God in penitence, seeking forgiveness and grace.

All Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, and word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you our God. Amen.

May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. All Amen.

The Gloria is sung by the virtual Choir. Please remain standing if you are able. 2

The Liturgy of the Word

A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah - read by Mr Dominic Jones, Chief Executive, The Mary Rose Trust.

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture, says the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: it is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’ (23.1-6)

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians - read by Dr Alex Hildred, Head of Research, The Mary Rose Trust.

Now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the . For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, so that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling- place for God. (2.13-end)

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. 4

Some people may stand for the reading, but please stay seated if you wish.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia, . As Jesus went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them. Mark 6.34 All Alleluia.

GOSPEL READING

The Lord be with you All and also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. All Glory to you, O Lord.

The apostles returned from their mission. They gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the market-places, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed. (6.30-34, 53-end) This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

After the preacher’s introduction, please sit.

SERMON

5

After the sermon silence is kept.

Then please stand, if you are able, as the ministers move to the Mary Rose grave in the Navy Aisle, together with representatives from The Mary Rose Trust.

AT THE MARY ROSE GRAVE

Dean Blessed are the poor in spirit: All for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be satisfied.

Let us remember before God all who have lost their lives at sea, and among them the members of the ship’s company of the Mary Rose, entrusting them in the faith of the Risen Christ, to the mercy of God, our Maker and Redeemer.

The ‘Still’ is piped by a Cadet from HMS Excellent RNVCC.

A minute’s silence is kept.

The ‘Carry On’ is sounded.

A wreath is laid by Mr Dominic Jones, The Mary Rose Trust, who says

They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning we will remember them. All We will remember them.

After a short silence everyone returns to their places.

Please sit for the intercessions.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Let us pray for the peace of God, in the Church and in the world.

Lord God, we thank you for those who have helped us to recognize you and have faith in you. Bless all ministers in your Church as they lead your people through times of anxiety, into ways of quietness and trust.

Lord, in your mercy All hear our prayer.

Speak through the tumult of the world; calm the arrogance of the powerful and the anxiety of the powerless. Have compassion on all who wander without direction and guide them into the paths of peace.

Lord, in your mercy All hear our prayer.

Grant to us, in the pressure of our daily lives, the time to be still and to learn the wisdom that comes in silence. Help us to use our leisure well so that we may have strength to help those whose lives are linked with ours.

Lord, in your mercy All hear our prayer.

Lord, we pray for the sick in body, mind or spirit; for all affected by Covid, physically or emotionally, for the right response and restraint tomorrow on ‘freedom day’. Come to all in need with your healing power.

Lord, in your mercy All hear our prayer.

We pray for all who have passed over the waters of death and come to the shore of eternal life. We remember those who have died whom we knew and former members of The Mary Rose Trust. Give to the departed that peace which this world cannot give and the light of that true freedom which awaits us all at the last.

Merciful Father, All accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

7

Please remain seated for the reading of Banns of Marriage and any Notices. Then please stand, if you are able, for the Peace.

Hail, true Body, born of Mary, who truly suffered on the cross: whose pierced side flowed with water and blood; be to us a foretaste of heaven; in the hour of death be our soul’s food. O gentle, O holy, O Jesus Son of Mary. Amen.

Some people may stand for the Eucharistic Prayer, but stay seated if you wish.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Lord be with you All and also with you.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, Lord God, our light and our salvation; to you be glory and praise for ever.

From the beginning you have created all things and all your works echo the silent music of your praise. in the fullness of time you made us in your image, the crown of all creation.

You give us breath and speech, that with angels and archangels and all the powers of heaven we may find a voice to sing your praise:

The virtual Choir sings.

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Holy, holy, holy Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Lord God of hosts. Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua Heaven and earth are full of your glory. in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.

How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and rebelled your love remained steadfast.

From them your raised up Jesus our Saviour, born of Mary, to be the living bread, in whom all our hungers are satisfied.

He offered his life for sinners, and with a love stronger than death he opened wide his arms on the cross. 9

On the night before he died, he came to supper with his friends and, taking bread, he gave you thanks. He broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said:

Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Great is : All Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

Father, we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross; we remember his dying and rising in glory, and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand.

Pour our your Holy Spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creation; may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence, form us in the likeness of Christ, and build us into a living temple to your glory.

Bring us at the last with Mary, Thomas of Canterbury and all the saints to the vision of that eternal splendour for which you have created us;

through Jesus Christ, our Lord, by whom, with whom, and in whom, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise:

All Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

A time of silence is kept. Please sit for the Lord’s Prayer. 10

THE LORD’S PRAYER

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD We break this bread to share in the . All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Lord God, whose Son is the true vine and the source of life, ever giving himself that the world may live: may we so receive within ourselves the power of his death and passion that, in his saving cup, we may share his glory and be made perfect in his love; for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. All Amen.

All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

12

Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm doth bind the restless wave, who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea.

O Saviour, whose almighty word the winds and waves submissive heard, who walkedst on the foaming deep, and calm amid its rage didst sleep: O hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea.

O sacred Spirit, who didst brood upon the waters dark and rude, who bad’st its angry tumult cease and gavest light and life and peace: O hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea.

O Trinity of love and power, our brethren shield in danger’s hour; from rock and tempest, fire and foe, protect them whereso’er they go: and ever let there rise to thee glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

Words: William Whiting (1825-1878) Tune: MELITA The

The Lord be with you All and also with you.

May God, who has called us out of darkness into his marvellous light, bless you and fill you with peace; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always All Amen.

Go in the peace of Christ. All Thanks be to God. 13
