  • Sesame Street Platinum All-Time Favorites
“Sesame Street: Platinum All-Time Favorites” (1995) Added to the National Registry: 2014 Essay by Kathryn A. Ostrofsky (guest post)* Joe Raposo Original album cover Jeff Moss “Sesame Street,” which premiered in 1969 and is still producing new episodes 50 years later, is one of the most recognizable and beloved programs in the history of television. Its meticulously- researched curriculum and its memorable puppet characters have long been acknowledged to have been important factors both in “Sesame Street’s” popularity and in its contributions to American culture, but its music has been just as critical. As a musical comedy-variety show, “Sesame Street” has broadcast thousands of songs and released over one hundred albums, along with scores of singles and book-and-audio sets. Catchy melodies attracted preschoolers’ attention, repetitious song structures served as teaching tools, and professional performances rendered the children’s program entertaining for adults who controlled the dial. Meanwhile, releasing albums extended “Sesame Street’s” lessons beyond the broadcast hour and helped fund continued production of the show. “Sesame Street” reached nearly every American preschooler for decades, cutting across lines of ethnicity, region, and social class. Thus, although “Sesame Street” is rarely mentioned in lists of popular music, it is probable that more Americans can sing “C is for Cookie” than know most of the chart-topping hits of bygone years. The “Platinum All-Time Favorites” album is a compilation of recordings from “Sesame Street’s” first 25 years, released in 1995 by Sony Wonder on cassette and CD. It represents “Sesame Street’s” prolific output of broadcasts and recordings, which served as a common cultural experience for generations of American audiences.

  • S the Rubber Ducky Was Patented in 1928 (Video)
Originating In The 1800’s The Rubber Ducky Was Patented In 1928 (Video) According to a 1973 Sesame Street calendar, Rubber Duckie’s Birthday is January 13th so around the country it’s National Rubber Ducky Day! A friend of Ernie and Big Bird, Duckie made his debut in a February 1970 episode. The rubber ducky (also spelled duckie) has come a long way from his first concept as a chew toy for children. While the origin of the first rubber ducky is uncertain, many rubber molded toys came about when rubber manufacturing developed in the late 1800s. They produced a variety of toys from dolls and various animal shapes, including the rubber duck. In 1928, Landon Smart Lawrence received the earliest patent for a rubber duck toy. His clever design weighted the toy so that when it tipped it returned to an upright position. The sketch included with the patent was that of a duck. During World Wars I and II, rubber was a valuable commodity. Rationing became mandatory and by the 1940s with the advent of plastic, the rubber ducky began being produced in vinyl and plastic. Russian Sculptor Peter Ganine sculpted many animal figures. One, a duck, he later designed and patented into a floating toy which closely resembles the rubber ducky we have become familiar with today. Sales of the iconic yellow rubber ducky we’ve come to know today soared in Britain in 2001. Why? A British Tabloid, The Sun, reported Queen Elizabeth II had a rubber duck in her bathroom that wore an inflatable crown.

  • The “Amazing” Song Music by Chris Jackson, Lyrics by Chrissy Ferraro Every Kid Is an Original, We’Re All One of a Kind
The “Amazing” Song Music by Chris Jackson, Lyrics by Chrissy Ferraro Every kid is an original, we’re all one of a kind. There’s no one else quite like us that you’re ever gonna find. And that’s what makes us wonderful, we’re different as can be. But in some real important ways we’re still the same, you see. (refrain) We all can feel happy. We all can feel mad. We all can feel good. We all can feel bad. We all want to laugh and we all want to play. We all are amazing, each in our own way. We all are amazing, every kid is amazing. We all are amazing, each in our own way. For some of us it’s harder to reach out as others do. But when you just look closer you’ll see amazingness show through. We each have our own ways to see the world and show we care. But we know we can be friends ’cause there’s so much that we share. We all are still growing, we all need a hand. We all need a friend who can understand. We all are important and we all are okay. We all are amazing, each in our own way. At times we may have our own ways to play and that’s okay. But in the end we’re all so much the same in some big ways. (refrain) We all can be silly, we all can be sad. We all can feel lonely, we all can feel glad.

Sesame Street(™) Assistant Musical Director, Trombonist, Arranger & Stalwart Sideman, JOE FIEDLER Looks at 50 Years of Musical Invention on OPEN SESAME, Fiedler Takes Well-Known Sesame Standards Such as “Sesame Street Theme,” “Rubber Duckie,” and “People in Your Neighborhood,” Deconstructing Each Into Something Completely New, Yet Rocking, Swinging or Joyful Featuring Jeff Lederer, Sean Conly, Michael Sarin and Special Guest STEVEN BERNSTEIN Out February 22, 2019 on Multiphonics Music Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street? Or more precisely, do you know how trombonist Joe Fiedler - an accomplished jazz improviser and bandleader with sideman credits including Andrew Hill, Eddie Palmieri, Charles Tolliver, Celia Cruz, Satoko Fujii and a host of others - became a musical director and arranger for one of the most beloved children's shows in television history? It all started in March 2008 with a Broadway gig playing In the Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s warmup for the monstrously successful Hamilton. As a seasoned pro making a living full-time on the Latin music scene (touring with Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri and other giants), Fiedler heard right away that the Latin-themed In the Heights arrangements could be better. He suggested fixes, which impressed Bill Sherman, the Tony Award-winning orchestrator on the gig. Sherman and Fiedler arrived at Sesame Street as a package deal in September 2009. From playing over 350 freelance gigs a year, Fiedler commenced work on what would become hundreds of Sesame Street arrangements, and thousands of underscoring cues. But he never stopped growing his reputation as leader, making swinging, angular, sinewy, sonically adventurous improvised music with the Joe Fiedler Trio on such albums as Sacred Chrome Orb and I’m In.
