HEAD COACH CHRIS RICH SECOND SEASON

UNC Greensboro announced on July 30, 2019, that Chris Rich has been named men’s soccer head coach. The first- year head coach led the Spartans to a Southern Conference Regular Season title in 2019, finishing with a 9-9-1 record, while going 5-1-0 in conference play. Entering the SoCon tournament as a No. 3 seed, UNCG reached as far as the conference final after defeating No. 6 Belmont in the semis. Senior Casey Penland earned the Spartans’ first SoCon Player of the Year honor for the first time since 2015, with six players receiving conference postseason honors in all. Coach Rich’s squad ranked second in the SoCon with a goals against average of 1.29, while shutting out five squads over the course of the season. Penland also earned United Soccer Coaches All-Region honors in his first season under Coach Rich, later signing a contract with USL club .

Rich spent the previous 12 years as an assistant coach, including his three most recent stops being at Atlantic Coast Conference schools Duke, and Virginia Tech.

Success In The ACC

Over the past three seasons, Rich served as assistant men’s coach and recruiting coordinator at Duke, where he helped guide the Blue Devils to two NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances and finishes in the top 15 of the final United Soccer Coaches poll.

During that span, Duke also garnered 12 All-ACC selections including six last season, the most earned by the school in a single season since 2001. Additionally, the Blue Devils had a combined five players selected in the Draft in 2017 and 2018.

In his role of recruiting coordinator, Rich secured three top-12 Top Drawer Soccer national recruiting classes while the men’s soccer team maintained a 3.3 cumulative team GPA.

During the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Rich was an assistant coach for North Carolina’s men’s soccer team, aiding in all aspects of running the program including recruiting, scouting, video analysis, practice and game preparation, and operations. In those two seasons, the Tar Heels won a combined 30 games and advanced to the Elite Eight of the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

In 2012 and 2013, Rich also served as an assistant coach with Virginia Tech where he oversaw scouting of oppo- nents along with the development of First-Team All-ACC selection Kyle Renfro. Renfro was only the second Hokie to earn First-Team All-ACC honors.

Starting At His Alma Mater Before A Move To Division I Rich began coaching in the Division I ranks in 2011 as an assistant coach at Florida International after spending four seasons at Barry (2007-10) – his alma mater -- as assistant coach.

While on Barry’s coaching staff, Rich was instrumental in the Bucs making two trips to the NCAA Tournament. In 2010, Barry set a new program-record with four All-American selections.

Rich is also a scout for United States Soccer Federation and has been a national instructor for United Soccer Coaches since 2011. He earned his B.S. in Sport Management from Barry in 2006 and his M.S. in Sport Management from Barry in 2009. ASSISTANT COACH SCOTT WELLS SECOND SEASON

Scott Wells started his first season as assistant coach for the men’s soccer program in 2019, joining UNCG after spending two seasons with the University of Charleston. Wells and the first-year Spartan coaching staff led UNCG to a Southern Conference Regular Season title in 2019, finishing with a 9-9-1 record, while going 5-1-0 in conference play. Entering the SoCon tournament as a No. 3 seed, UNCG reached as far as the conference final after defeating No. 6 Belmont in the semis. Six UNCG players received conference postseason honors in all, with Casey Penland receiving Player of the Year recognition. The Spartans ranked second in the SoCon with a goals against average of 1.29, while shutting out five squads over the course of the season. Wells spent the two previous seasons as the top assistant for the University of Charleston’s men’s soccer team, where he helped guide the Golden Eagles to two Sweet Sixteen appearances and a DII National Championship in 2017. During his first season with Charleston, the Golden Eagles earned an overall record of 21-1-2 before defeating Lynn University in the National Championship 3-1 on penalty kicks. Last season, Charleston collected a record of 18-1-2, before falling to West Chester 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to the Sweet Sixteen defeat, Charleston did not trail the entire season, outscoring opponents 54-3. Prior to his time at Charleston, Wells spent a year with the Tennessee Soccer Club as the Assistant Director of Coaching and Player Development. Wells began his duties in the coaching ranks with the University of Rio Grande, starting as a graduate assistant before being promoted to the top assistant coach position. In 2015, Rio Grande earned a national title after being ranked No. 1 the previous season. In addition to his role as assistant coach for UNCG men’s soccer, Wells is also the Director of Soccer for Camp Winadu. Wells earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies from Limestone College before receiving his M.E.D. with a focus on Collegiate Leadership from Rio Grande. ASSISTANT COACH JAIME IBARRA SECOND SEASON

Jaime Ibarra joined men’s soccer’s coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2019 season after spending more than two years with Southern Methodist University’s men’s soccer program. During the 2017 and 2018 seasons, Ibarra served as a graduate assistant as the Mustangs won back-to- back American Athletic Conference championships. Coach Ibarra and the rest of the Spartan coaching staff led UNCG to a Southern Conference Regular Season title in 2019, finishing with a 9-9-1 record, while going 5-1-0 in conference play. Entering the SoCon tournament as a No. 3 seed, UNCG reached as far as the conference final after defeat- ing No. 6 Belmont in the semis. The Spartans ranked second in the SoCon with a goals against average of 1.29, while shutting out five squads over the course of the season. Under Coach Ibarra, freshman goalkeeper Brendan Pulley led the Southern Conference with a 0.98 goals against average, and was second in the SoCon with a .895 save percentage in conference play. Pulley was both a SoCon All-Freshman but a Second Team All-SoCon goalkeeper as well. In 2017, the Mustangs won 17 games – most since the 2006 season – en route to an appearance in the third round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. The next season, SMU defeated then-No. 7 UCF in the AAC Championship Game to earn a second-straight trip to postseason play. Prior to his time at SMU, Ibarra was an assistant coach at Mountain View Community College and worked with the North Texas Olympic Develop- ment Program. He earned a B.A. in History and a M.B.E in Bilingual Education from SMU. VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT BRIAN WHITE FIRST SEASON UNCG men’s soccer added former Greensboro College Assistant Coach Brian White to its staff in March of 2020. He will be the fourth member of the Spartans’ permanent staff, filling the Volunteer Assistant role. White brings a high level of experience coaching in the Piedmont Triad, making stops at both Greensboro College and over the past five years. 2019 was White’s fourth season coaching with the Pride, as he helped lead Greensboro College to a 54-21-3 record over that span and four consecutive USA South Atlantic Conference Championship semifinal appearances. Before joining the Pride staff, White spent the 2015 season as a Volunteer Assistant with High Point, where he coached seven players that went on to sign professional domestic league contracts, including 2020 second round New England Revolution draft pick Keegan Meyer. A graduate of Roanoke College (2014) and Liberty University (2018), White has extensive experience coaching among the youth ranks in the Triad. The new UNCG hire spent a year as an Assistant Director of Coaching for NC Fusion’s U11-U14 programs and another as an Assistant Director for Pied- mont Triad FC’s U14 and U15 boys. He also spent a season as an Assistant Coach with the now USL League 2 side Carolina Dynamo, where he worked with current Spartan student-athlete Riley Copeland. White started his coaching career at Roanoke College as a Volunteer Assistant, after earning three All-ODAC conference honors during his playing career as a Maroon. He will kickstart his first season with the Spartans this fall of 2020. Year-By-Year Team Statistics
