2 The Chapman, Gennings, Badger and Lyon Famiies
Stephen Wood (1794 - 1849) and Delia Chapman (1798 - 1871) were the progenitors of the Wood family who came to Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Stephen and Delia moved to from Ashford, CT to Wayne County about 1834 (see the Wood Family in this book for more information).
Please see page 1 of the Wood Family regarding the parentage of Stephen Wood. Essentially his mother was thought to be Louisa Lyon, possibly of Ashford, but not proven. His father's name is unknown.
Delia Chapman was from Ashford, and she has a long lineage, including the Chapman, Gennings, Badger and Lyon Families, who go back to England. Genealogies and sources for information on these families follow in this book.

Shedlowski, Nov. 24, 2007, William Chapman of Mansfield, and his wife Abigail Lyon Chapman, and their family lived south of the Mansfield, CT town line. Per Church of Churst Church Records, 1718-1834, Ashford, CT, see citation for residence of William Chapman: "March 15th, 1724 William Chapman junior was recommended from the Church of Mansfield to our church and received agreeable to his desire to be one of thus church." This date indicates the date that William Chapman, Jr. moved from Mansfield, to Ashford, CT. William Chapman and Anna Lyon had the following children:
i. ELIZABETH3 CHAPMAN (daughter of William Chapman and Anna Lyon) was born on 10 Aug 17369. ii. WILLIAM CHAPMAN (son of William Chapman and Anna Lyon) was born on 16 Feb 174410. Notes for Abigail Lyon: Lyon Memorial, Massachusetts Families, Including escendants of the Immigrants William Lyon, of Roxbury, Peter Lyonn, of Dorchester, Geroge Lyon, Of Dorchester, with Introduction Treating of the English Ancestry of the American Families. Editors: A. B. Lyon, MD of Detroit, MI and GWA Lyon, MD, of Phildelphia, PA. Detroit, MI, Press of William Graham Printing, 1905, page 44 states as follows: " William Chapman's first wife was Abigail Lyon of unkown parentage (Abigail of John, (No. 57) died in 1719 at age 14; no other Abigail of suitable age can be found." At the moment, the parents of Abigail Lyon are shown to be Joseph Lyon and Mary Bridge, but this is doubtful. Further research is needed to substantiate this connection to this line of Joseph Lyon. Per Church of Churst Church Records, 1718-1834, Ashford, CT, see citation for residence of William Chapman: "April the 19, 1724, Abigail Chapman, the wife of William Chapman, ??? and having a letter of Dismission written by the ??? of the Church of Woodstock, CT, ??? to receive full communion." This date indicates the date that Abigail Chapman, Jr. moved from Mansfield, to Ashford, CT. These church records confirm that Abigail lived until at least 1724, and that she was indeed from Woodstock, CT. Since she was married in 1718, as noted in Ricker Compilaton, a confirmed source, she would have been about 17 to 18 years of age, at least. An Abigail was
4 Generation 2 (con't) born to John Lyon and Elizabeth (?) Aug. 1, 1705 in Woodstock, CT, a second Abigail Lyon was born to Thomas Lyon and Abigail (?) Nov 12, 1707, in Woodstock, CT. This first Abigail born in 1705 would have been only 13 IF she were the Abigail that married William Chapman, Jr. Another supposition can be made, and that is that Abigail Lyon had been previously married to a man named Lyon, and that her maiden name was not Lyon. Thus further research is required as to who Abigail Lyong who married William Chapman was, and who her parents were. William Chapman and Abigail Lyon had the following children:

Notes for STEPHEN BACKUS: There is no marriage record for Stephen Backus to Esther Chapman, and in the birth record for Ashford,Windham, CT, it states that Timothy Jennings Backus (recorded incorrectly as Stephen Jennings Backus) was born of the body of Esther Chapman. There is also mention of Stephen Backus as being Esther Chapman's husband in her probate administration recorded in Probate Records, Ashford, CT. Therefore it is most likely that Timothy Backus was born out of wedlock. At the time that Timothy was living with his mother Esther Chapman, around age 10, Stephen Backus was livng two houses away on the same street. The Ricker Collection lists the son of Esther Gennings as Stephen Gennings Backus born Jun 17, 1811. However in the Town Clerk's Birth Records of Ashford, CT, the birth was first listed as Stephen Jennings Backus, son of Esther Chapman, and then Stephen was crossed out and over written with Stephen. Esther Jennings maiden name is written two ways, Gennings and Jennings. Timothy J. and Stephen are the same person. There are deeds that list Timothy J. Backus as the grantee and grantor to Delia Chapman. This are subject to further research by researching probate records for Esther Chapman. The father of Timothy J. Backus was Stephen Backus who lived a few houses from Widow Esther Chapman in the 1930 census. According to the testimony of Esther Jennings Chapman to apply for her Widow's pension based on the Revolutionary service of her husband, Elijah Chapman, she had never remarried after Elijah's death. After Elijah Chapman, her husband died, she had an illegitimate child by her neighbor, Stephen Backus. This child was named Timothy.
After the death of Esther, son of the Estate was left to Mary Delia Wood who deeded it to Timothy Backus (Delia's half brother). She traveled from Damascus Township, PA, back to Ashford, CT to do this. In the Ashford Town Clerk's office, there is an old 1860 map of the Ashford Area. If you look just East of the large River running North to South, and East of a mountain range, you can see the name, T. L. Backus. In 2010, modern maps show that he he would have lived on Pilfershire Road, , north of Kings Road. Deed Delia Wood to Timothy J. Backus, dated May 10, 1845, conveying 2 acres and 20 rods, more or less, located in Ashford, CT., states that this was the same land as set to Deli'a Woods Sister, Tryphena Bowers, in the second distribution of the Estate of our Father, Elijah Chapman, and conveyed to Delia Wood by deed from Ephraim Bowers and said Tryphena Bowers containing 2 acres and 20 rods, more or less.
