As Americans, we should take the time to reconnect with our history and with our core values by honoring and praying for those who gave their lives for the ideals we cherish. More than a million members of America’s Armed Forces have died in the wars and conflicts this nation has fought since the first colonial soldiers took up arms in 1775 to fight for independence. Each person who died during those conflicts was a loved one cherished by family and friends. Each was a loss to the community and the nation. That’s why our nation established this day of memorial. It is important for us to remember. Memories are precious and defining. We are who we are by what we choose to remember, and a nation is what it is by what it chooses to remember and celebrate. That’s why our nation set aside this day to remember all those men and women who have given their lives in service to this great country and made it possible for us to be here today and to worship freely. It’s so easy for us to take for granted this day and the memories of all those heroic men and women. A three-day weekend with beautiful weather makes it tempting for us to get so busy with family activities and fun that we might forget what today is about. What a tragedy that would be! We need to take time to remember all those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives so that we could have our lives, and millions around the world could have theirs. Let me share with you three important reasons why we should remember. Number one: We should remember because it’s through the sacrifice of others that we have our freedom and our faith. In India, there is a beautiful monument called the Kohima Memorial that commemorates all the Allied soldiers who died repulsing the Japanese Army who had invaded India in March 1944. The Allied Forces succeeded in driving the Japanese Army back and out of India. This impressive memorial consists of a large monolith of Naga stone, some fifteen feet high, set upright on a dressed stone pedestal. It has a small cross carved at the top of the monolith and below there is a bronze plaque that bears an even more impressive inscription which is known as The Kohima Epitaph. It reads: “You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Their Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today" It is because of all those people whom we remember this weekend—those people who sacrificed their lives in the yesterdays of history because they believed in ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ for every person—it is because of all those people that the further pursuit of these ideals in all the tomorrows of history is possible. The second reason we remember is that we cannot afford to forget. American philosopher George Santayana once said: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. “While it may be politically fashionable to forget certain things about our history or to re-write them to fit a particular viewpoint or agenda, the danger from forgetting them is that history, with its many disasters, has a way of repeating itself. Finally, we remember because the act of remembering is an act of gratitude. We in this country owe a great debt of gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives so that we could live free. We can start to pay that debt by not forgetting, by remembering what they did and what they stood for. Charles M. Province expressed it poignantly in his powerful reflection: " It is the Soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us Freedom of the Press. It is the Soldier, not the poet, Who has given us Freedom of Speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer,

Who has given us the Freedom to demonstrate. It is the Soldier, not the lawyer, Who has given us the right to a fair trial; And it is the Soldier--who salutes the flag, Who serves the flag, and Whose coffin is draped by the flag-- Who allows the protester to burn the flag."

It is important that we take time to remember. Memories are precious and defining. We are who we are by what we choose to remember, and a nation is what it is by what it chooses to remember and celebrate. That’s why we gather on this Memorial Day to celebrate the greatest Memorial of all—the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass— and to pray for those who sacrificed their lives for us and for our nation. All those other memories of their heroic sacrifices are small, mirrored reflections of the greatest sacrifice of all—the sacrifice of Christ on Calvary where Jesus said, “You go out to all the world and say of Me, for their tomorrow and for their eternity, I gave My Today."
