48 MARKET WAGON (aka STRAWBERRY VAN) by A. Dendy of Mitcham circa 1912, to suit 16 to 17.2hh single heavy horse. The body is painted yellow on a red undercarriage both lined in black with 12/14-spoke English pattern wheels with iron treads. With a rear drop-down tailboard, rades and comes with shafts. An original and authentic example of a working vehicle originally constructed for W. R. Barker of Laleham to transport produce from his farm to the London Markets; Covent Garden, Brentford and Borough Market. Produce would be loaded in the afternoon and the horse and driver would travel through the night to London, delivering their goods before returning at dawn. The vehicle is notable for having neither a seat nor a brake; instead the driver would walk beside the horse or, if there was room among the produce, would sit on the front rade. On the return journey, possibly carrying horse manure or empty crates, the driver could sit on the empty rade. Indeed, so reliable and familiar with its route was the that the driver could happily drift off to sleep safe in the knowledge that the horse would happily plod his way home to Laleham. The body and the rade of this style of wagon were used in exactly the same form for motor vans that replaced the horse in the 1920’s. This vehicle was rescued by Carl Boyde in the 1960’s, when the vans were being burned to extract their metal, and has been beautifully restored.

49 A 1919 DUNTON & SONS “READING” VAN, owned by Denis Harvey (1925-1992) In the 1950’s Denis Harvey purchased this wagon from two gypsy brothers and it became his home for a time whilst he worked as a stonemason in Sussex. In the 1960’s he and his wife Rita started restoring the wagon, wanting to get it back to how it would have looked when Dunton made it. They dedicated all their energy, with care and attention to detail, ensuring the retention of the authentic original design. Once completed it inspired both of them - Denis wrote “The English Gypsy Caravan”, a seminal book on the different styles of Gypsy vans made for the travelling people. This stunning wagon features on the front cover and interior of the book along with line drawings and plans, and it is the first authoritative book on wagon restoration. He also produced one of the first photographic books about Gypsies called “Gypsies: Waggon-Time and After”, which also contains images of this wagon. A copy of each of these books is included in the sale. The wagon also features on pages 122 and 123 of ‘Romany Relics’, by John Barker and Peter Ingram (see lot 1985). The original cut glass mirrors became an inspiration for a number of Rita Harvey’s (née Brown) paintings, including one where her miniature portrait appears 27 times in the reflection. Rita did all of the gilding on the wagon and this inspired her to use gold leaf in her paintings throughout her artistic life. This elaborate wagon has beautiful carvings and scroll work throughout, gilded with 24 carat gold leaf. It is complete with carved steps, shafts, cut glass mirrors, Hostess stove, brass Angel lamp, matching carriage lamps, etc. By purchasing this wagon, you are buying a beautiful historic living ‘van’ still in museum condition, with a patina of age that is timeless - rich and evocative like a beautiful well-loved aged antique. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the very finest and most original Dunton & Sons Reading in existence.
