BILL TURNER GIRLS SOCCER On Tuesday 20 June Callaghan College Wallsend Bill Turner Girls Soccer Team played their Round 3 match vs St Mary's, Gateshead. After defeating Hunter School of Performing Arts & in the first 2 rounds, Wallsend were looking at playing well as a team to progress through to Round 4 Regional Semi‐ Finals. We did play well as a team against a strong St Mary's team who had won their games 9‐0 & 8‐0 respectively and we created many chances in the opening 10 minutes. Unfortunately, we conceded 2 goals from corners in the last 5 minutes of the 1st half to go into half time down 2‐0. St Mary's scored an early 2nd half goal, before some fabulous team play saw Jayde Platford score 2 goals in 5 minutes to get the score back to 3‐2 with 15 minutes to go. Unfortunately, we could not find the equaliser, however the girls played so well together and earned a lot of respect from their strong opponents, narrowly going down 3‐2. Well done girls. Mr Michael Psarris Soccer Coach

GIRLS STATE SOFTBALL FINALS The weather gods were shining on the girls over the two days at the State Softball finals on the 21st and 22nd June. Our fantastic team competitively contested 4 games over two days. The girls came away with two wins out of four games against some very skilful opposition. Game 1 saw Callaghan defeated by a strong team from , . Game 2 was a fantastic game where Callaghan girls came away with a win over Melville High School from the North Coast. That win placed Callaghan against Hunter rivals, Hunter Sports High School. In a game full of great skill from both teams, the Callaghan girls came away with a courageous win over Hunter Sports which they were absolutely thrilled with. Callaghan then advanced into the plate final for 9th and 10th place overall or first and second in our pool. Woolooware High School girls from Sydney were stronger on the day and defeated our Callaghan girls. Congratulations girls on another great tournament of Softball and being placed as the Hunter champions for 2017. Incredible pitching from Olivia Moore and awesome catching from Jessie Bakewell, doing their jobs so well over all four games. Many girls are new to the game and picked up a variety of technical skills which is great for them and the game of Softball. Resilience, patience and courage were on display from our Callaghan Girls Softball team once again. Our team consisted of Jessie Bakewell, Tiffany Clarke, Emily Drake, Zoe Franks, Sophie Henderson, Maddison McGuigan, Isabella Miller, Leili Mohu, Olivia Moore, Ella Moriarty, Alexandra Tagaroulias, and Ebony Woodcock. Sincere thanks to our fabulous coaches assisting us on the day in Helen Greentree, Danielle Moore and Michael Nixon, whose support of our Callaghan community is so valuable. Thanks also to Sean Moore who assisted us on the gala day leading up to the state finals. Great Job Team! Mrs Karen White Softball Organiser

GIRLS RUGBY LEAGUE ALL SCHOOLS KNIGHTS KNOCKOUT COMPETITION The Years 7/8 & Years 9/10 teams have been learning and improving their rugby league skills since the beginning of Term 1. On Tuesday 27 June, both teams played in the inaugural Girls All Schools Knights Knockout Competition. Throughout their games the girls demonstrated teamwork, encouragement, resilience, skill and an overall love for the game that they were playing. This is fantastic for girls rugby league as these opportunities continue to grow for the girls. Both teams were overall winners in their pool division. The Years 7/8 team went on to play their semi‐final and drew with Rutherford High School. As the rules stated, the team who scored the first points were the winners and unfortunately this saw Rutherford go through to the finals. We were gutted for the girls to come so close, but so proud of what they achieved on the day, as the majority of the team had never played a game of rugby league before. Players Player: Tahnee Burke Coaches Award: Takita Shoobert & Ebony Woodcock The Years 9/10 team won their semi‐final and continued on to the grand‐final. The girls drew with St Peters and went into Golden Point time. First 5 minutes played, no points were scored. In the second 5 minutes Sonniah Waiyo came through with a dummy pass to score the winning try! With this result, The Years 9/10 team went on to represent the Newcastle/Hunter Valley area against the winner of the Central Coast competition at the All Schools Knights Knockout Grand Final Day. Players Player: Sonniah Waiyo Coaches Award: Elizabeth Farmer Edwards We are so proud of the girls and it has been wonderful to see their skills and knowledge of the game continue to improve since last year. Thank you also to Feonah Gibbons, Mitchell Brown and Caleb Purkiss for your assistance, and to family and friends for your support throughout the day. Ms Kirbi Masters & Mrs Amanda Phillips Rugby League Coaches

GIRLS RUGBY LEAGUE ALL SCHOOLS NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS GRAND FINAL DAY Our U/16’s Girls Rugby League team represented the Newcastle/Hunter Valley Area at the All Schools Newcastle Knights Grand Final at McDonalds Jones Stadium on Tuesday 18 July. The girls were given an NRL experience of getting ready in the change rooms and warming up in the facilities at the stadium. The team consisted of Georgia Bragg, Jemma Brown, Emily Drake, Skarlett Eastman, Elizabeth Farmer‐Edwards, Jade Gallogly, Sarah Howarth, Charlie Little, Isabella Miller, Leili Mohu, Tatyana Quinlan, Morgen Speers, Beurine Sunzu, Janaya Trapman and Sonniah Waiyo. They had trained during their holidays in preparation and were pumped and ready to play against . Running through the spectator tunnel organised by Andrew Johnson, the girls were well supported in the stands from the school, family and friends. The girls started off shaky and were intimidated by the size of their opposition. Gorokan were first to score and went on to score another try not long after. Using a set play, Sonniah set Sarah up for the first try for the team, which lifted the girls’ confidence in their ability. With a hit up from Leili and strong running from Janaya, we scored another try just before halftime, which had the score at 12‐8 to Gorokan. A half‐time talk from coach Phillips saw the girls come out firing in the second half. Gorokan scored the first try in the second half, but the girls’ attacking and defensive skills had lifted which resulted in Isabella scoring under the goal post. In their next attacking set, a great line break from Isabella set Morgen up for a run‐away try, evening out the score 16‐16. With 3 minutes to go, the girls came through with some skilful set plays setting up Skarlett for a try and the girls taking the lead 22‐16. Emily came through with the last try to seal the win for the girls! Sonniah also converted 2/5 of the tries under pressure and with some difficult kicks out wide with the final score 28‐16. Each of the girls are to be congratulated on their involvement in the team, from powerful defence from Georgia, Beurine and Tatyana, running hard at the opposition from Jemma, Charlie and Jade, and consistent encouragement and lifting of the girls’ confidence by the captain, Elizabeth. Woman of the Match went to Isabella Miller. The girls were crowned Central Hunter champions with this win and now go on to play in the Female State Finals on Thursday 24 August in Sydney. We are extremely proud of the girls and congratulate them on their fantastic sportsmanship displayed. Thank you again to Feonah Gibbons for your First Aid expertise, Andrew Johnson for organising the spectators from our school and family and friends for their support from the stand. Players Player: Beurine Sunzu Coaches Award: Leili Mohu Mrs Amanda Phillips & Ms Kirbi Masters Rugby League Coach & Trainer

BOYS COLLEGE STATE KNOCKOUT SOFTBALL COMPETITION The Callaghan Boys College Softball team played 3 games on Wednesday 26 July and fought valiantly to try and secure a spot in the NSW State Softball finals at Stevenson Park, Mayfield. The boys played their first game against , who were the Hunter Region Baseball champions this year. Callaghan made some costly errors in this match although our boys, many new to the game, learned a lot and went into the next game against Francis Greenway High School a much stronger team. Callaghan had a good win in this game and then came up against a very strong team in Hunter Sports High School. They held their ground and made some fantastic outs, including some superb outfield catches and infield support for the talented pitching from Hayden Moore (Wallsend) and great catching from Jake Williams (Waratah) and Connor Richardson (Jesmond). Undeniable skill from Hunter saw them take the game out and with only two teams progressing to the State Finals, Callaghan missed out this year to Kotara and Hunter Sports who both played very well on the day. Congratulations to all players on your efforts and for representing your college with pride. You showed courage and persistence and we look forward to the competition in 2018. The team consists of Joel Carter, Jackson Craig, Rohan Davis, Seth Douglas, Lincoln Harwood, Cameron Jones, Ethan Maher, Cade Mills, Hayden Moore, Connor Richardson, Jack Taylor, Connor Terry and Jake Williams. Thank you to Helen Greentree and Danielle Moore for your technical assistance and knowledge in coaching this enthusiastic and talented team of boys in Softball. Mrs Karen White PDHPE Faculty

CENTRAL HUNTER GIRLS RUGBY LEAGUE GALA DAY The Years 7/8 and 9/10 teams had another opportunity to compete in a Rugby League Gala Day at Lakeside Sporting Complex in Raymond Terrace on Thursday 27 July. This year the gala day changed its name from just the Kacey Drummond Cup, allowing for three different age group cups named after three prominent females involved in Rugby League. This was a great opportunity for the girls and great recognition for the three females after just coming out of the Women in League Round celebrating women's involvement in rugby league. Years 7/8 competed for the Kacey Drummond Cup – Kacey worked for the ARL/NRL for many years and was part of the NRL Development Team that started Girls Rugby League in the area. Under 16s competed for the Isabelle Kelly Cup ‐ NSW Women's Interstate, Women's NRL All Stars and Australian Jillaroo from the Central Coast. Opens Secondary competed for the Caitlin Moran Cup ‐ NSW Women's Interstate, Indigenous Women’s NRL All Star and Australian Jillaroo from Newcastle. Both teams were overall winners in their Pool Divisions and proceeded onto the semi‐finals. The Years 7/8 team came up against Rutherford High School again (same team they had a draw with in the previous semi‐final). The girls were a little shaky to begin the game after losing one of their team members to injury and Rutherford were able to outrun them to get two tries in. The girls then fought back and started to use their attacking and defending skills that they had been showcasing all day, but unfortunately a Rutherford player injured themselves and the game was stopped & the luck had run out for the girls to continue on with the game. Congratulations to the girls on demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and compassion for the injured student as she was attended to by medical staff. Again, very proud of the girls’ improvement in their skill and knowledge and we look forward to seeing their development in rugby league. Players Player: Jorja Brown Coaches Award: Montana Stephens The Years 9/10 team were successful in their semi‐final and proceeded to the grand‐final against Hunter Sports High School. Fatigue had set in for the senior team and Hunter Sports were too quick and were able to get around them on the outside, as their defence was too tired. The girls still utilised their attacking skills and were able to get in two tries, but unfortunately were outplayed in this final with the final score being 16‐8 to Hunter Sports High School. It was another great opportunity for the girls to continue to work on and showcase their rugby league skills. Thank you to Alex Nean, Skarlett Eastman and Abbey Fordham for your assistance, and family and friends for your support throughout the day. Ms Kirbi Masters & Mrs Amanda Phillips Rugby League Coaches
