This centenary celebration is observed under the theme: “A Woman of fortitude” and it is a major milestone in the incredible story of Mama Sisulu in our nation’s journey to freedom and liberation. It also has a significant impact in bringing diverse South Africans together hence it is meant to highlight the principles and values espoused by this great African and to galvanize the spirit of national pride and Ubuntu. As August is also Women’s month, we will always remember the sacrifices made by the countless women such as Lilian Ngoyi, , Rahima Moosa, Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, Motlalepula Chabaku, Bertha Gxowa and Albertina Sisulu who led a women’s march of 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the government requiring women to carry passbooks as part of the pass laws. The department stays committed to support and enhance the lives of women throughout the province and em- power them to rise above any challenge.
