The School established a Recognition Committee following the Royal Commission’s public hearings, which met three times in 2016. The School implemented the major recommendation of the Recognition Committee by appointing a Survivor Liaison Coordinator, Renee Handsaker, to provide outreach and support to survivors of child sexual abuse at the School. Ms Handsaker has performed a vital role assisting survivors in a confidential and independent way. Her role is complimentary to, but separate of, the independent counsellor provided by the School to offer counselling and advice. The Royal Commission released its final report from the School’s case study in February 2017.

  • Synopsis and Author
The Cosmic Tourist Take your seats for the greatest tour ever - one that encompasses no less than the whole of the Universe. En route, we stop off to gaze at 100 amazing sights - from asteroids to zodiacal dust and from orbit around the Earth to beyond the most distant galaxies. We start right here on Earth, with your tour guides: the three intrepid cosmic voyagers Patrick Moore, Brian May and Chris Lintott. They explain the sights, what they are, and how they fit into the astronomical zoo of familiar and curious objects and phenomena. The trio express their own personal enthusiasm for each marvel you encounter. The images present the extraordinary beauty of the Universe as seen through the eyes of the biggest and best telescopes on Earth and in space, and occasionally in the backyards of expert amateur observers. Featured sights include earth, the moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Asteroid belts, Zodiacal Dust, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Transneptunians, Alpha centauri, Betelgeux, the centre of Milky Way, the edge of the Universe….and many more wonderful destinations far beyond your reach. The astronomers even teach you how to view the Universe for yourself. Sir Patrick Moore is the world's most famous astronomer, author of more than 100 books, and presenter of the world's longest running TV programme, BBC's "The Sky at Night". He was the first man in the modern era to introduce astronomy to a mass audience. He has also assisted NASA with lunar cartography. Brian May, although best known to the world as the lead guitarist of supergroup Queen, recently completed the PhD in astrophysics, which he abandoned when Queen first started to find fame.

  • 'Seven Minutes of Terror' for NASA's Perseverance Rover on Arrival at Mars
Planetarium News 'Seven Minutes of Terror' for NASA's Perseverance Rover on Arrival at Mars NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover mission is only a matter of hours away from its landing on the surface of the Red Planet. Its 293-million-mile journey from Earth to Mars is coming to an end. Once the craft hits the top of Mars' atmosphere at between 12,000 and 13,000 miles per hour, an action-packed seven minutes of descent awaits it – nicknamed the 'Seven Minutes of Terror' – complete with temperatures equivalent to the surface of the Sun, a supersonic parachute inflation, and the first ever autonomous guided landing on Mars. Only then can the rover – the biggest, heaviest, cleanest, and most sophisticated six- wheeled robotic geologist ever launched into space – search its target, Jezero Crater, for signs of ancient life and collect samples that will eventually be returned to Earth. This illustration shows the events that occur in the final minutes of the nearly seven-month journey that NASA’s Perseverance rover has taken to arrive at Mars. Hundreds of critical events must execute perfectly and exactly on time for the rover to land on Mars safely. “NASA has been exploring Mars since Mariner 4 performed a flyby in July of 1965, with two more flybys, seven successful orbiters, and eight landers since then,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s headquarters in Washington. “Perseverance, which was built from the collective knowledge gleaned from such trailblazers, has the opportunity to not only expand our knowledge of the Red Planet, but to investigate one of the most important and exciting questions of humanity about the origin of life both on Earth and also on other planets.” Jezero Crater is the perfect place to search for signs of ancient microbial life.
