FEATURE Frog bank leaps to $625 bid at Stony Ridge By William Flood This frog-shaped TOLEDO, Ohio — Ohio’s Stony Ridge Auction hosted a superb sale that included mechanical bank ($625) more than 400 lots of primitives, mercantile items, native-American pieces, cast-iron was a limited release banks, 19th-century children’s items, and Civil War antiques. by Kilgore Manufacturing Operating from their “antique” digs (the circa 1926 Lemoyne School) near Toledo, the Company of company held the event online through LiveAuctioneers but allowed restricted in-person Westerville, Ohio. previewing and by-appointment pickup. Prices realized were strong, with half of the 400-plus lots selling for three-figure and four-figure sums. The auction’s highest price, coming in at $3,000 and nearly 10 times pre-bid estimates, was for a circa 1830-1840 canvas family portrait attributed to Vermont painter Sheldon Peck (1797-1868). Peck was an itinerant and self-taught portrait and furniture painter. His signature decorative motif — one long stroke flanked by two short- er ones, resembling a rabbit track —appeared on this piece on the background and on the mother’s clothing. The painting was restored and attributed to Peck in 1967 by William H. Pillsworth. The auction’s next highest and slightly over pre-bid estimate at $2,600, was for a late 18th to early 19th-century Northeast Woodland Indians 11-inch ash burl bowl. The hand- scraped piece still retained much of its original pigment and grain. The auction’s third-ranking bid at $1,250, nearly double its expected high bid, went for a tiger maple child’s chest of drawers (not a full-size one, mind you, but a miniature!). It featured mold- ed maple drawers, inlaid posts, and brass drawer pulls and dated 1847. Two other items surpassed the 4-figure mark including a 9-inch American Indian burl scoop with no detected issues which grabbed $1,050 and a 10-inch blue Shaker oval pantry box getting the same amount. Stunning pieces — both hand-crafted and manufactured — were available across the entire auction. For $925, a lucky buyer took home a working-condition, circa 1932 Art See Stony Ridge, page 4
