Veena Sahasrabuddhe comes from a family of musicians. Her father, late Pundit Shankar Shripad Bodas, was a disciple of Pundit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. Young Veena started her musical education with Kathak dance. She was initiated into Khayal singing by her father and received her initial training under her brother, late Pundit Kashinath Shankar Bodas. Padmashri Balwantrai Bhatt, late Pundit Vasant Thakar and late Pundit Gajananbua Joshi have also contributed to her training. The style she has created for herself retains the fundamental values of the oldest gharana in Khyal music, the Gwalior Gharana while incorporating attractive features from Kirana and Jaipur gharanas. The vidwans laud the authenticity of her music while most listeners are moved by its directness and intensity. Apart from Khayal, she is sought after for her rich repertoire of bhajans. She has sung at all the prestigious venues and occasions including Tansen Samaroh in Gwalior and Sawai Gandharva in Pune. At the Vokalfestival in Stockholm and at the Voices of the World festival in Copenhagen she represented Indian Classical Voice. She has recordings under many leading labels. She has been awarded the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 1993. Besides being a popular performer, she is also a composer and a teacher. This may affect the practices in the field of music. This present study does the scrutiny of the broad sociocultural settings in context to the music conferences of India. After they took it, I thought, 'These are announced on January 26th, maybe on the 25th night. I must listen to the radio before I sleep. Both of us must sit together before the radio, listen to the announcement and then sleep'. We sat for a long time. Nothing was announced. Dr. RANJANI RAMACHANDRAN Hindustani Classical Vocalist, Assistant Professor, Department of Hindusthani Classical Music, Sangit Bhavana, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan Email (Official): [email protected] Dr. Ranjani Ramachandran is a well known khayal vocalist of the Gwalior and Jaipur gharana having trained under eminent gurus including Padmashree Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Vidushi Veena Sahasrabuddhe and Pandit Kashinath Bodas. Ranjani also received guidance from Vidushi Girija Devi, acquiring a rich repertoire of Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti and Kajri. She has performed in prestigious platforms in India and abroad. Her research interests include music analysis, archiving and interdisciplinary studies. An ex- scholar of the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy, she is a recipient of many awards including the Charles Wallace Research grant from the UK and has been a long time collaborator with ethnomusicologists at the Durham University in UK. She is currently working as an Assistant professor and teaches vocal music at the Department of Hindustani classical music in Sangit Bhavana at Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal. Ranjani is a Doctorate in vocal music. Her doctoral thesis focused on studying the stylistic diversity within the Gwalior Gharana through analysis of recordings of a few Gwalior Gharana vocalists from the 20th Century. SAWANI SHENDE-SATHAYE Footprints:- Sawani is born in a musically rich family. She was introduced to Indian Classical Music at a tender age of only six by her grandmother, Smt.Kusum Shende , herself a noted singer of the Kirana Gharana and an honoured artist of the Sangeet Natak Era. Sawani’s father, Dr.Sanjeev Shende, a disciple of Smt.Shobha Gurtu, has groomed her in semi classical genres like Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, etc. Quest for more and more knowledge in music brought Sawani to learn more music under the expert guidance of Dr. Smt.Veena Sahasrabuddhe, a noted classical vocalist from Gwalior Gharana. Debut:- Sawani made her first debut at the age of 10 to celebrate her grandmother’s 61st birthday. The journey of concerts started when Sawani was invited to perform at the prestigious Pt.Vishnu Digambar Jayanti Samaroh in Delhi when she was just 13. On the same day, in the evevning, Sawani was honoured when she performed for the then President of India, honourable,Mr.R.Venkatraman at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.Since then she has never looked back. Her Gurus:- Smt. Kusum Shende. Dr.Sanjeev Shende Dr.Veena Sahasrabuddhe. Her Music:- Sawani’s music is a beautiful soul searching combination of the Kirana and the Gwalior Gharana, where she mesmerizes audiences with enchanting melody and strength of both. Sawani’s confidence and mastery in Khayals, her crystal clear diction and overall sensitivity in presentation takes every performance to a very high aesthetic level. Her rendition of semi-classical genres highlights the emotive and expressive quality of Indian classical music and adds a very important dimension to her performance leaving audiences spellbound.
