El sector hotelero español permite que esto sea posible gracias al crecimiento y adaptación de las infraestructuras a lo largo de la historia. De este modo, en este trabajo se pretende dar a conocer mejor dos de las cadenas hoteleras españolas líderes en el sector en multitud de países. Así, desarrollaremos tanto el inicio como la expansión e internacionalización de Meliá Hotels International y RIU Hotels and Resorts. A continuación, no solo se analizarán los aspectos mencionados anteriormente, sino que profundizaremos de manera que se llegue finalmente a las conclusiones obtenidas del desarrollo. ABSTRACT: Tourism is nowadays one of the most important sources of income around the world. Spanish hospitality industry makes this possible thanks to the growth and adaptation of the infrastructures during time. Therefore, this essay is pretended to reveal some information of two of the most important hotel chains in Spain and among other countries. Furthermore, we will give details on how the chains Meliá Hotels International and RIU Hotels & Resorts started their business and how they managed to expand as we know them nowadays. Hereunder not only aspects mentioned before are going to be analyzed but also, we will dig to get to the right conclusions. Introducción: El turismo 1.1 Concepto Según la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT), el turismo consiste en aquellas actividades que las personas realizan mientras estan de viaje en entornos donde no es habitual que se encuentren, cuyos fines son el ocio, los negocios u otros y duran periodos inferiores a un año. (OMT 2014) 1.2 Evolución histórica Inicialmente, la sociedad se desplazaba únicamente por motivos de necesidad como podían ser guerras, catástrofes naturales o exilios, pero no es hasta el siglo XIX, como consecuencia de la Revolución Industrial, cuando nace el turismo como tal. A partir de este momento la intención principal de los desplazamientos es el ocio, cultura, salud… De esta manera, nace ligado a la alta sociedad de aristócratas ya que su condición económica es privilegiada.
