From the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash comes this unique musical about love and faith, struggle and success, rowdiness and redemption, and home and family. More than two dozen classic hits, including I , , , and the title tune, paint a musical portrait that promises to be a footstompin’, crowd-pleasin’ salute to a uniquely American legend. Always…Patsy Cline fans will love this tribute to The Man in Black.

Writer Richard Maltby, Jr. let the music of Johnny Cash tell The Man In Black’s story rather than focusing on a straight biographical narrative. In his author’s notes for the original Broadway production, Maltby wrote, "It's almost a mythic American tale of growing up in simple, dirt-poor surroundings in the heartland of America, leaving home, traveling on wings of music, finding love, misadventure ... and eventually returning home. It's about the journey of a man in search of his own soul."

Director Matthew McCoy says, "I am so thrilled to be making my Altarena Playhouse debut with this show," McCoy said. "This has been an extremely rewarding process. Not only to be working with such an inspiring team of artists but also to learn more than I ever knew about the 'Man in Black.'"
