2 The proposed expansion and building of new primary and secondary schools in the Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex area Introduction

The Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex areas are served by a large number of highly-regarded and successful schools. The County Council has been closely monitoring the number of children in these schools to make sure they can meet the demand for places. We have received evidence of further growth in the number of children. This is in part due to an increase in the birth rate and also in response to migration and major house building. This booklet explains the proposals of local schools to expand to cater for the extra numbers. WSCC, in its role as commissioner of school places, is working in partnership with the schools co-ordinating this consultation exercise on their behalf. The individual governing bodies of each of the schools will take the decision on whether schools expand and the Secretary of State for Education appoints the sponsors of any new schools. I urge you to read this document and write to us with your views. Your opinions are important to the us and will influence how and where school places are provided.

Jeremy Hunt WSCC Cabinet Member for Education and Schools

Size of school and ‘forms of entry’ – the term ‘form of entry’ is often used as a shorthand in planning school places. A form of entry is defined as 30 pupils per year of age; thus a two form entry (2fe) primary school will have up to 60 pupils per year and up to 420 in total. Such a school would require a minimum of 14 classbases plus other accommodation (hall, other curriculum areas, etc)
