Education Directory North Carolina Education Directory Public Schools of North Carolina State Board of Education Department of Public Instruction The Education Directory can also be found online: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/nceddirectory/ Foreword The North Carolina Education Directory is prepared and distributed annually by the Department of Public Instruction’s Division of Communications and Information as a service to educators and others interested in public education. The directory provides information on the State Board of Education, the Department of Public Instruction, a number of educational associations, individual school systems and all public elementary and secondary schools in the state. I appreciate the valuable assistance from school superintendents and others who supplied the information for the directory, and I hope it will be helpful to you. Michael E. All school systems and schools have code numbers. A list of code numbers for school systems is on the inside front cover along with a handy reference guide to school system phone numbers. If you know the name of a school but do not know its location, see page 235, the Alphabetical Index of Public Schools. This index includes the code number and telephone number of all public schools in this state. The first three digits of the code number indicate the school system. For example, 110-304 A C REYNOLDS HIGH 704-298-2500 — To find the school system for the 110 code, refer to the code list on the back of the front cover. This is the code for Buncombe County. To find the principal’s name and other information about this school, turn to the listing for Buncombe County and look for this code in the list of schools. Local board of education attorneys are listed under the names of the board members in the Alphabetical List of School Units by Counties. Their addresses are included, but call the central office of the school system for phone numbers. If you need the address of a private or home school, see the listing for the Office of Non-Public Schools in the Special Schools’ section, page 258. If you need the email address of a Department of Public Instruction employee, you can use this model: the first initial of the person's first name and the first seven letters of the person's last name followed by @dpi.state.nc.us. For example, [email protected]. 6 State Board of Education Membership The State Board of Education consists of the Lieutenant Governor, the Treasurer and eleven members appointed by the Governor for eight-year, overlapping terms, subject to confirmation by the General Assembly. Eight of the appointed members of the Board represent the eight education districts of the State. These districts are drawn by the General Assembly. The Governor also appoints two high school students as advisors to the State Board of Education. A high school junior is appointed each year for a two-year term. The N.C. Teacher of the Year also serves a two-year overlapping term as an advisor to the State Board of Education. NORTH CAROLINA EDUCATION DISTRICTS 7 State Agency The adventure begins! Friends of the Capitol 2009-June 2010 Report Our Mission Statement: Friends of the Capitol is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation that is devoted to maintaining and improving the beauty and grandeur of the Oklahoma State Capitol building and showcasing the magnificent gifts of art housed inside. This mission is accomplished through a partnership with private citizens wishing to leave their footprint in our state's rich history. Education and Development In 2009 and 2010 Friends of the Capitol (FOC) participated in several educational and developmental projects informing fellow Oklahomans of the beauty of the capitol and how they can participate in the continuing renovations of Oklahoma State Capitol building. In March of 2010, FOC representatives made a trip to Elk City and met with several organizations within the community and illustrated all the new renovations funded by Friends of the Capitol supporters. Additionally in 2009 FOC participated in the State Superintendent’s encyclo-media conference and in February 2010 FOC participated in the Oklahoma City Public Schools’ Professional Development Day. We had the opportunity to meet with teachers from several different communities in Oklahoma, and we were pleased to inform them about all the new restorations and how their school’s name can be engraved on a 15”x30”paver, and placed below the Capitol’s south steps in the Centennial Memorial Plaza to be admired by many generations of Oklahomans. UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION OFFICE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION AND REHABILITATIVE SERVICES Honorable Sandy Garrett Superintendent of Public Instruction Oklahoma State Department of Education AUG - 4 2500 North Lincoln Boulevard 2004 Oklahoma City, OK 73105-4599 Dear Superintendent Garrett : The purpose of this letter is to respond to Oklahoma's March 31, 2004 submission of its Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2002 Annual Performance Report (APR) for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part C funds used during the grant period July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003 . The APR reflects actual accomplishments made by the State during the reporting period, compared to established objectives . The APR for IDEA is designed to provide uniform reporting from States and result in high-quality information across States. The APR is a significant data source utilized in the Continuous Improvement and Focused Monitoring System (CIFMS) implemented by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), within the U .S. Department of Education. The APR falls within the third component of OSEP's four-part accountability strategy (i .e., supporting States in assessing their performance and compliance, and in planning, implementing, and evaluating improvement strategies) and consolidates the self-assessing and improvement planning functions of the CIFMS into one document . OSEP's Memorandum regarding the submission of Part C APRs directed States to address five cluster areas : General Supervision; Comprehensive Public Awareness and Child Find System ; Family Centered Services; Early Intervention Services in Natural Environments ; and Early Childhood Transition. Background On February 4, 2004, OSEP responded to the Oklahoma State Department of Education's (OSDE's) FFY 2001 APR (submitted in 2003) and identified two areas of noncompliance.

  • The Self-Memorialization of John Motley Morehead Iii
A CRAFTED LEGACY: THE SELF-MEMORIALIZATION OF JOHN MOTLEY MOREHEAD III Lindsay E. Oliver A senior honors thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of American Studies in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2019 Approved By: ABSTRACT Lindsay E. Oliver: A Crafted Legacy: The Self-Memorialization of John Motley Morehead III (Under the direction of Timothy Marr) This paper explores the self-memorialization project of John Motley Morehead III (1870- 1965) through his benefactions to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during the 1930s through 1950s. An examination of the conception and execution of the Morehead- Patterson Bell Tower, Morehead Planetarium and Sundial, and Morehead-Cain Foundation reveals how Morehead sought to carefully engrave his name and memory into both the built landscape and the reputation of the University to promote a legacy of prestige through his own memory. This paper also examines relevant biographical details drawn from Morehead’s personal papers, which have not previously been subject to academic examination, and offers a critical review of Morehead’s legacy and contributions to the University as well as situates them within the philanthropic context of this period. Finally, it explores the implications of Morehead’s self-memorialization project for contemporary philanthropy as a means of establishing legacy. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project would not have been possible without the encouragement and unrelenting positivity of my advisor, Tim Marr, to whom I extend my utmost gratitude for guiding me through this process, reading my drafts, sending Melville quotations, and propelling me to be a better writer and student.
